The Community Education Specialist 2 (CES 2) will perform a range of program implementation duties, functioning as part of a statewide cohort team focused on increased farmer adoption of climate smart practices targeted at soil health, manure management, and water quality goals. The CES 2 will engage in efforts to assist farmers and ranchers in voluntarily implementing Climate Smart Agriculture, including soil health, compost management, and irrigation and nitrogen fertilizer efficiency management practices to mitigate greenhouse gases and adapt to climate change impacts such as droughts while maintaining the high environmental quality standards established in the state. The incumbent will provide technical assistance in partnership with local coalitions, when available, to growers on irrigation and nutrient management reporting requirements established by the water boards.

The CES 2 serves as the primary technical assistant specialist responsible for assisting farmers and ranchers in California completing quantification methodologies and applications for submission to California's Climate Smart Agriculture incentive programs. Through their supervisor and network the incumbent interfaces closely with scientists conducting research at the University of California to understand Climate Smart Agriculture: soil health, compost management and irrigation and nitrogen fertilizer efficiency management practices. The CES 2 serves as a subject matter expert on proven Climate Smart Agriculture management practices highlighted in California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Office of Environmental Farming Innovation's Climate Smart Agriculture incentive programs.

The CES 2 will document efforts with application assistance and catalog information and resources provided to clientele. The incumbent's data are used to demonstrate program reach and impact across the state.

This position is a contract appointment that is 100% fixed that ends on 01/09/2022 with the possibility of extension.
