I know Jessica shared info about the Bates Summer Sustainability internship, but here are a few more details.  If you're interested, please get in touch with Amy Dvorak!

Hi all,

The below email came through the CAS listserv also, but I wanted to share a bit more with you here. Part of the value we provide to these employers is not just connecting them with great students, but directly connecting them with students that have the expertise or skills they need (this leads to a large portion of employers coming back each year and/or directly hiring interns from this program). For me, it's remembering that student who wrote their semester paper on issues in bee agriculture or the one that got all excited about concepts in data quality. Or the one that loves outdoor education and happens to be from Minnesota? In any case, if you have a student who might fit these particulars we are looking for, please share this information with them. Otherwise, if you would share it with your departmental or class listservs, I would greatly appreciate it! I am also happy to come and chat with your class about it. Here is our current year employer list with more details.

In regards to skills, generally employers are always looking for: communications, writing, research, systems and strategic thinking, spreadsheet and data or project management skills. This year we are also seeking:
  • GIS and story mapping
  • Communications including social media, graphic design (read: canva)
  • Grant writing and donor engagement
  • Grassroots organizing, political research
Even more specific...
  • Candidate with personal connection to Northern Minnesota
  • Basic understanding or interest in curriculum standards k-12
  • Ethnobotanical historical research
  • Understanding and/or interest in pollinator conservation
  • Greenhouse gas inventorying
  • Fluency in Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese Mandarin, or other languages, oral and written
  • Interest in rural America and/or socio-political nuances in energy
  • Climate and environmental justice voter campaigns
If you know of any students who might fit these , please send them my way!
