Dear colleagues,
On behalf of the student co-chairs (Sarah Jabbarnia, Natalie Connelly, and Alia Raslan), I’m delighted to call your attention to the upcoming 12th annual Middle East and North African Studies Symposium, February 18-20. The student co-chairs did a ton of work for this and have put together a great program!
The theme this year is “Uplifting Voices: Stories of the Middle East.” Attached is the poster for the keynote address next Wednesday Feb. 18 at 5pm in Council Chambers. The presenter is Michael Allen, Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Oregon, and the title is “Archival Remains: Arab Worlds in Early Cinema.” The poster for this event is attached below.
Also attached is the general schedule of other events, including a student panel, a pair of films by Usman Ally, and an evening of MENA-themed arts. Come one and all, and please spread the word among your students!
Also please be aware that Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, will begin the evening of Tuesday Feb. 17, so Wednesday will be the first day of fasting. We’ve scheduled a brief break in the keynote session just after sundown (5:43pm Pacific) to break the fast.
Please spread the word and join in the events!
Thank you!
Paul Powers
