Hi students,

Are you interested in transportation? (automobiles, public transportation, bicycles, etc.) In Liz Safran's innovative Numbers course this spring students were given a challenging problem: to improve transportation at Lewis & Clark College. The students were then largely left to their own devices to craft a solution!

Come and hear the solutions proposed by the students, ask questions, and discuss with an illustrious panel of experts. It promises to be a celebration of their accomplishments and an educational experience about tackling tough environmental problems!

Wednesday, April 22, 6:30-8:30 pm in Council Chamber

Free, open to the public. See full information below.

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to invite you to the final presentation of my two Numbers sections, which will happen on Wednesday, April 22, 6:30-8:30 pm in Council Chamber

The students in “Take Charge! Tackling Environmental Problems” (CORE 121-02 and -07) were given the challenge of improving transportation at Lewis & Clark College. They were in charge of the entire problem-solving process, including the difficult challenge of self-organization and project management.

They will present their proposed solutions to a panel of experts who have graciously agreed to provide feedback and ask the students lots of questions. The panelists include:

Ted Leybold, Transportation Policy Director at Metro Regional Government

Karissa Nickerson, Transportation and Parking Supervisor, Portland Community College

Josh Walter, Vice President for Advancement, Lewis & Clark College

Maura Paxton, Planner, Alta Planning + Design

Sarah Goforth, Transportation Demand Management Specialist, Portland Bureau of Transportation

The students will give a presentation of their proposed solution, followed by extended Q&A drawing first on panelists’ questions and then on questions from the general audience. We would love to have you join us for this culminating event.

The class structure is modeled closely on MIT’s “Solving Complex Problems," which is part of their Terrascope program that has been running for 25 years. I am deeply grateful to Dr. Ari Epstein of Terrascope for his tremendous guidance and mentorship in this unconventional educational approach!

Best regards,

Liz Safran
