httpCall equivalent for TCP calls in a wasm http filter

We need to use redis to cache some data from a wasm http filter in envoy. But I notice that there are no documented ways of creating a "bare" tcp connection, let alone using redis directly. I am assuming that creating network connections directly from the wasm vm is forbidden, due to the limitations of webAssembly itself. Is there any way to work around this issue, or am I truly stuck ?! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

As an aside, I notice envoy supports a Redis proxy, but I think that still doesn't provide a solution to this issue.
