New defaults for H/1 and H/2 codec implementations

Hi everyone,

As mentioned before, Envoy introduced new codec implementations for the HTTP/1.2 and HTTP/2 codecs that were disabled by default. You can see more about the design in the tracking issue here #10878.

With #13579, the defaults will now be the new implementation. You may override the new codec behavior and revert to the old implementation at runtime using the instructions in the release notes. Crashes whose stack trace points to codec implementations may be related to the new codec implementation.

The split implementations with runtime fallback will last until Envoy release 1.17 while the new codecs are tested in production. The old codecs will be removed after the release.

If you have any issues in production that may be a potential security issue (e.g. a crash), please report the issue to envoy-s...@googlegroups.com. Otherwise, please file a GitHub issue.
