Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately, my Windows 7 computer is going to die soon, so I am going to be getting a Windows 10 machine. Is there any way that I can play Entombed on it, or should I install a virtual machine on the new system?

Thanks,
Kim

I haven't gotten many games installed on my Win 10 vm thus far, but I
don't see why it shouldn't work.

I now have nothing but Windows 10 machines under at least partial dominion: a powerful desktop, midrange laptop, and rather underpowered tablet.
Any and all of these play Entombed with serviceable efficacy. Windows 10 is, in every respect I'm aware of, at least as game-friendly as 7, 8, or 8.1. It actually seems to be a bit better with some games, Entombed included.
Good luck, all round.

Hi Paul,

THanks so much! I'm so happy to hear that. I only wonder one more thing.
I am playing version 1.5B. Which version are you using? I hope that I
can still use that one. I still have to beat Entombed in hard mode. That
is a goal of mine.

Hi Kim,

I've just loaded entombed and when it starts it tells me I'm running version 1.02k, I did think this was the most recent version but maybe not, as your version sounds newer. It should work fine though still, in fact all my audio games that worked on my windows 7 work fine with the new windows 10, I think the only issue I had to start with is it had muted the sound steps and I had to turn up the volume of steps the first time I played on windows 10 if you do have any problems running your version, drop me an email and I can always send you my version.

Hard mode really is hard! Lol I think I managed it twice and towards the end of the game it's pretty intense when a battle starts going the wrong way and it looks like all the hard work and hours put in will be for nothing when all the characters look like they're going to die or have the dreaded zombie rot or poison!

Ok now I'm hopelesly confused. When I did play it, I got it from driftwood.com I think, and if I remember it was 1.5K or whatever Paul had. when I started, after choosing ot run as admin, it said I didn't have a framework installed, I got it, I think it wanted direct ex so I got that, from the microsoft page I was linked to. I checked, it was Microsoft. now I was never able to play it. You're making me go boot up my laptop and try again. I really would love to try this game, it's been ages. also how do you turn up the volume of footsteps? I forget all the shortcuts. Thanks for any help. really hoping this works.

1.05b was a test version Jason had put out to fix a few bugs from
1.02k, as well as test a new installer and some other stuff. The
drawback to 1.05b was the new installer didn't properly install the
prereqs correctly, though if you went to Microsoft's site and
downloaded and installed them yourself, you could get the game
running. Think is was the SQL prereqs that were the problem, and
people running 64-bit Windows have to have both the 32-bit and 64-bit
versions installed to get the game running properly. I used to have a
text file with detailed instructions, but I can't seem to find it at
the moment.

At the moment, i'm booted and hoping my computer will talk. Lmao i haven't booted it in a few months. Thanks for any help anyone is willing to give me

well you had to uninstall the old sql runtimes then it would actually do
whatever it was supposed to do.

Hi Siobhan,

As jason mentioned in his previous email, I think the issue with running the 1.05b is to do with the SQL file not installing properly , which is needed to run the 1.05B version. I dug through my old emails and found the instructions that brandon from this list sent me on how to download and instal the SQL so that entombed 1.05B will work properly. Although , if you can't get it to work and don't have a working version of entombed I can always send you the 1.02K version, which I think works fine without the SQL stuff.

Email below on how to install the SQL

"The Entombed installer doesn't install SQL Compact 3.5 Service Pack 2 correctly, which this version of Entombed needs to function properly. I'm guessing since others have had this problem, you may also be having the same issue. Try installing the SQL yourself.
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5783
This download is a self-extracting exe made by Microsoft. Extract it to a folder you can easily find, which will contain three files:
install.txt, SSCERuntime_x86-ENU.msi, and SSCERuntime_x64-ENU.msi

As the install.txt states, if you're running a 32-bit version of Windows, install SSCERuntime_x86-ENU.msi. If you run a 64-bit version of Windows, then run SSCERuntime_x86-ENU.msi followed by SSCERuntime_x64-ENU.msi.

If you're not sure whether your Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, there's a couple easy ways of finding out. Bring up Windows Explorer to show the list of files and folders on your computer's c: drive, which is where most people install Windows. If you have both a program files and a program files (X86) folder, you have 64-bit Windows. Also check your Windows folder, if you have a syswow64 subfolder, then you also have a 64-bit version of Windows.
Otherwise, if you only have the one program files folder and no syswow64, you're running 32-bit Windows.

Once you've installed the SQL Compact 3.5 SP2, try running Entombed again."

Give these instructions a try if you really want to try getting 1.05b working, otherwise just stick with 1.02k. hth

Ok, finally found the install instructions I'd written shortly after
1.05b came out, had it under a different txt filename then I'd
remembered. :P

The Entombed 1.05b installer doesn't install SQL Compact 3.5 Service
Pack 2 correctly, which this version of Entombed needs to function
properly. Install the SQL yourself.

I double-checked the link to make sure MS didn't change the download
link for the SQL, and it still works. Good luck.

1.02k still uses SQL, just a different version. The install for
Entombed had no issues I can rcall installing the prerequirements, but
it had some unfortunate bugs that 1.05b was released to fix. I
specifically recall that a maxed picklocks skill still wouldn't unlock
locked chests, which 1.05b did fix. Glad somebody found my old
instructions, should I ever lose the text file again. :)

Thanks for all the help, I'll go get the 1.02K which was the one i had before. the instructions seem a little daunting, because right now my Mac, windows computer, and tv are all in states of non-workness lmao. The mac is fixed, I'm trying to fix the other two at the moment. technology and I must've gotten a divorce and I haven't signed the papers yet. lol

Ok, here's what I've done, run both the full version which was 1.2I from www.blindgames.com I think the site it, and the updater file both run as admin. After doing both, I start it, windows tries to find a solution, and the program stops. so should i attempt the installation instructions? Thanks again for all your help.

well uninstall entombed.
uninstall sql sp1
that should be fine, install 1.05b and it will install.
make sure directx 9 or up is loaded there is a download somewhere.
You are using dotnet 5 so you don't need dotnet.
I forgot what visual c the game used but it should have that loaded.
it also uses the xna framework.

Well the installer is installing it right but its not that smart.
it can detect you have sql installed but if sp1 is installed it thinks
its loaded and you have the wrong version.
If you uninstall sp1 the installer will extract and give you a folder
with files to load it seems it can't do it all itself either.

all you need to do is uninstall sql sp1 from add remove then just
install the new version it technically should detect itself then.
At least thats what I did.
if you havn't installed it well try and see.

Hi Siobhan ,

So if your on the entombed website www.blindgames.com, there is a link to launch the game or install , if you click the instal file it should add all the prerecresit stuff needed to run entombed, except the SQL I mentioned earlier . then if you download the SQL from the link I sent you earlier and save it somewhere you can find, . then go to where you just saved the SQL file , open it and there are 3 files, one is a text document , this gives you instructions on what to do , but you can just ignore that and just follow the 2 below steps:

1. click the SSCERuntime-ENU-x86.msi file, this will install the 32bit version, I know you have 64bit windows but you still need to install this file
2 then click the SSCERuntime-ENU-x64.msi which will install the 64bit version.

Then that should be everything done, try running entombed and it should now work fine. Let me know if it doesn't work though.

Paul

Thank you so much for helping, thelast person's message sort of put me off a little more. Again to much tech stuff. Ugh. Thanks again.

Hi,

Life's always better after a full belly hahaha.

No worries at all, if it doesn't work I've included 2 dropbox links below, one for entombed and one for entombed update. If you run the entombed set up first, this installs 1.02J and then once that’s installed run the update to upgrade that to the 1.02k version.

Hope you get it all sorted
