For those of you who are confused by the subject line, I've been
considering doing what YouTubers and particularly gamers call a Let's
Play of Entombed. Generally speaking a Let's Play consists of someone
playing through a game in its entirety, usually with commentary about
the various aspects of the game. I've done three Let's Plays so far
with generally favorable receptions from the audio gaming community.
So I'm curious to see if there would be interest in an Entombed
project. There would be spoilers of course but I suppose those who
aren't interested can avoid listening. The reason I'm considering
YouTube is because it might generate sighted gamers' interest, even if
only casually at first, in our little market.

Good idea bryan.

I actually game someone a link to your lets play shades of doom a bit ago,
as it seemed like a good intro to audio games and din't require any trouble
on their part, and as the best audio rpg, and a game which probably stands
up to most roguelikes out there, I think entombed as a lets play would work
exceptionally well and be a good advert too.

Beware the Grue!

With apologies if this is off-topic, but might I ask Paladin for details of
the three 'Lets Play' run throughs he has already done, and where we can
find links to them? I'd be very interested to have a look.

Cheers

Phil

Well just look up bryan198026. Unfortunately there probably wouldn't
be much to see since all I have to record with is my IPhone. The only
thing that might be problematic is that te documentation is extremely
incomplete, so I'm not entirely clear on all the jobs and races,
spells and abilities and what have you.

Ok, not sure what happened there, think my laptop has a mind of it's own
today lol. I was just writing that I'd probably get someone to look to see
what's on the vidio, just because I'm curious.

there's no need to see anything with a lets play of an audio game, sinse all
the flash does is emulate what's going on on the computer with bryan's
commentary over the top.

thus from an audio games perspective they're not really so different from
audio recordings, accept that they are flash, on utube and don't require
downloading.

entombed doesn't have anything to see on the video, just a blank white
window with the games title in text (I know the text from occasionally
switching into the window with hal's voice on when i've needed to pause the
game, turn Hal's voice on and go off and do something else).

That's more or less what I figured. I plan on beginning the recording
today. Might even upload the first episode today as well.

Well, you could turn the camera to your face, then we can see you drooling
every time you get a really rare object.

BTW are you just going to do a typical class path? Or are you going to do
strange things? Also are you planning on using cheats? Because I think there
should be some guide for finishing the game with no cheating! :)
Thanks,

Brandon Keith Biggs

I never use chheats in Entombed. And I only have the first episode
recorded. I just haven't gotten around to uploading it yet. As to what
you see, generally Let's Players don't show themselves, only te game.
You might see the game's graphics but not the guy playing it.

That's true.

I've been watching a bunch of mega man lets plays recently, and if you saw
anything other than the game they'd be really hard for me to view.

I have seen a couple of reviews where you essentially got a video camera
pointed at a screen, but those don't tend to be popular or easy to watch at
all, sinse just like with sound, the clearest and best image is the one
straight from your machine, plus you don't have to cope with a lot of random
other stuff on screen at once. Indeed, one review I watched of Golden axe Ii
on the mega drive I found ipossible to see simply because the reviewers head
got in the way of the camera so you couldn't see his screen (and his camera
was at such a distanct from his screen I couldn't see much on it anyway).

I'm now looking for some decent metroid lets plays to watch. There have been
some great mega man and Turrican oones. The mega man chap was hilarious,
sinse he voice acted all the dialogue written on screen with very comical
voices, he does a great Dr. wily, and indeed in mega man x5 where you see a
flashback of wily in a full fmv sequence redubbed it with his own voice
sinse he said he made a better wily than the actor in the flashback (which
actually he did), :D.

He also has some very funny phrases, I particularly like the way after
defeating a boss he said "and he's done, done like dinner!" :D.

Of course, all this was low vision related stuff, so it's great to get some
good audio lets plays on there.

Beware the grue!

I think my favorite Let's Player is a fellow by the name of HCBailly.
He does a lot of Final Fantasy LP's and he definitely has his share of
catchphrases. In fact his intro should be trademarked. "Hello, this is
HCBailly, and welcome to Let's Play Final Fantasy!" Then at the end of
each episode he does a sort of cliffhanger announcement like you might
see on some TV shows. I think my two favorite catchphrases, and I've
started immitating them, occur either when the game doesn't behave the
way he wants it to (IE a random enemy encounter just as he's about to
enter a town), or when there's a story event that would seem to spell
game over. In the former instance his reaction is a long, drawn out
"Gaaaaame!" spoken in a sort of warning tone. When the latter event
occurs his catchphrase is "Aaaaand he..dies." obviously modified
depeding on how many characters were involved and if tey were male or
female.

sounds fun.

the mega man lets plays I mentioned are by a chap called clement. One other
fantastic thing he does is occasionally stick in dialogue where there is
none. his extremely winy, "pleeeeease forgive me!" in those moments when
Mega man has just blown up Dr. wily's spaceship and Wily is nealing on the
ground are hilarious!

he also does a really quite intimidating Sigma for the x series as well.

Beware the Grue!

That would certainly help me with the Let's Play since I could be more
certain of describing everything as accurately as possible.

Hi folks. I'd be interested in such a "Let's Play" link, too. I'm a
relatively seasoned player by now, but listening would prove helpful
so I could pick up different strategies. I'd also like to know about
the other "Let's Play" games you've done.

Well the only episode that's currently up, and it may not actually be
searchable yet, is the first one. I've got a few more recorded that
I'll slowly upload over the next few days. This playthrough isn't
going quite as well as I'd hoped but I still think I can make it. Just
goes to show you how random the game is LOL.

Just letting you all know I'm uploading episode 2. Should be live in a
few hours.
