I paid $40 for this game 3 years ago and haven't been able to play for
the last 2 of them because I can't get the newer version of the game
to load when I install it. I recognise that this is a great game, and
that Jason has other commitments, but in the sighted world the delays
and bugs in this game would have caused international scandals by now.
Please can somebody help me feel the love for Entombed again by
assisting me to unpick the mystery of starting without an error?

I'm running version 1.5B with Windows XP and dotnet framework version
4 installed. When I try to start the game I get the message that
Entombed has encountered an error and needs to close. It asks me if I
want to send an error report. The report is a crazy collection of
computer code that I couldn't begin to understand. What could be
wrong?

Thanks in advance for reminding me of the sheer amount of awesome
these 20 jobs and 25 floors contain.

Hey

If I've got it right you'll need SQL, to run the game. I believe
it's a microsoft component.

Hi,
I have XP as well, and didn't have a problem running the 1.05 B test and since I am computer illiterate I am most likely useless in helping you out.
A juy named Jason Sims however wrote out  some instructions for helping others download and install the program. That is what I pasted down below. I know that it says that it is for 64 bit but I am thinking that maybe  it can illuminate what the problem is for your computer...hope his info can help you out somehow.
al
info is below...
******
I assume you mean the 1.05b test version? That can be downloaded from:
http://www.blind-games.com/newentombed/EntombedSetup.exe
When you install this version of Entombed, it will also ask where to extract
the SQL 3.5 package. Any temporary folder will work fine, then browse to
that folder. Since you said you're running 64-bit, you'll need to install
both the SSCERuntime_x86-ENU.msi and SSCERuntime_x64-ENU.msi packages in
that order. Once both SQL 3.5 packages are installed, you should be able to
run the Entombed test version without any problems.

1.05b can be downloaded from:
http://www.blind-games.com/newentombed/EntombedSetup.exe
You can look through the list archives to find the description of changes, I
can't remember off the top of my head. Also be aware that installing this
test version, you must know whether you have a 64-bit or 32-bit version of
Windows. The test version installer will have you extract the SQL 3.5
redistributable that must be installed before you attempt to run this
version of Entombed. If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, install
SSCERuntime_x86-ENU.msi first and SSCERuntime_x64-ENU.msi last. If you have
a 32-bit version, you just need to install SSCERuntime_x86-ENU.msi.

To determine if your Windows Vista or 7 is 32- or 64-bit, all you need do is
get into your c: drive listing. If there's a program files and a program
files (X86) folder, then you are running a 64-bit Windows. Also, if you
c:\windows folder contains a syswow64 folder, again you're running 64-bit.

Hope this helps.

Hi Allan and Welshweyr. Allan's right, but since you're running Xp (I'm assuming one of the 32-bit flavors, since Xp 64-bit is pretty rare and nastily buggy), just install the SSCERuntime_x86-ENU.msi and give it a try again. Let us know if you get it going.

The installer didn't prompt me to install any of the things you listed
above. It went through the Dotnet install but that was all. Where do I
find the components you mensioned, either on my computer or on the
internet? Sorry to be a nuisance.

It's a self-extracting archive Microsoft makes. Just extract it to a folder
you'll be able to easily find, and just run SSCERuntime_x86.msi. Once that's
done, give Entombed a whirl.

Hi,

I don't know a huge amount about computers but since so many people have
trouble with the install and I understand that it is due to the fact the sql
extracts and doesn't install as it has both versions the 64bit and 32 bit
and doesn't know which of the 2 to install and there fore this is why it is
done manually. could a solution be to have 2 versions of the entombed
download one specifically for 32bit and one for 64bit with the appropriate
sql files so they install automatically?

I only mention it since this is such a good game and people could be
missing out just as they can't get it to run.

Of course, Jason Allen will have to respond about how his installer works.
But according to Microsoft, both the x86 and x64 packages must be installed
on a 64-bit Windows in a particular order, which is why there's an
install.txt file in that SQL archive.

Makes sense, I thought there might be some reason like that, but thought I'd
suggest it on the off chance it could have worked. well back to the drawing
board for ideas for me then.

Hi all.
I found entombed a few months ago and I've been playing since. I did
try to upgrade but for some reason my paypal payment was rejected and
the money put back into my account. either that or I miss-read my
bank info and I've payed for an upgrade I never got. I think while I
was in hospital I saw something on this, but I was not well enough at
the time to read much.
I'd also like to know the "z" function does anything aside from
giving the little useless statement ending with the word
fruitless.. I've never found anything using the z key so I'm
wondering if its a gimic.
I'd love to get up to higher levels, but so far I've only made it to
level four without armor of any kind and no greeves gloves or a
shield or helm i don't know if its because I haven't been upgraded
to the full version, or whether I'm just inept, so how does one get
beyond level 4? what's wit the z key and how does one search,
really? how much does one second job affect gameplay?
thanks for any info or tips guys.

Mark,

The game play depends on race and class choices. Best to start out with
when you're new to the game is fighter, and I'd take assassin as a second
job with human as the race.

You're going to want to pick up weapons. Weapon stats can be compaired with
the c key when in your inventory. The main thing, at least for me, is
damage, with spead also being a factor. Armor is important, and one can
compare them as well. You'll find 2 other characters as you go along on the
first few floors.

your slash key is your friend, that will tell you what spots you've not
explored. If you're just going down when you find stairs, you might not find
your helpers.

the z key really isn't any good unless you have a thief, and it can help
find hidden rooms. That's buggy, as some chess can't be opened even when
the lockpick skill is maximized.

There's a lot of tips and tricks, and I'm sure other people will chime in.

I should play the game, it's been awhile since I've beaten it, but I got
burned out after playing it time and time again.

Oh, I'd definatly go for the goblin strong hold. You can get the goblin king
corps and reserect it, and get his swords and breastplate. The one raises
the speed, the other intelect.
The rock monster really doesn't give much, and I've found it's best to have a
mage to shrinkthe thing.

Have fun, and watch out for the nasty spiders and snakies.

The lock pick issue is fixed in 1.05b, though of course loads of people have
had issues installing it because of the SQL Compact not installing
automatically.

You can't do much in the demo version...
Try logging in with your user name and password and see what happens. I
don't think you use PayPal to pay, but I got the game so long ago I don't
remember. But try again!
Also, second jobs are necessary. You should try to use your points right
when you get them, because they just help. Also, put on armor, even though
it's crude. Armor really helps. I'd also ditch the branch and just use your
hands until you find some swords or axes.
Thanks,

Brandon Keith Biggs

I find if using a human fighter as your character that your better off not
holding a weapon in the lower floors since their punch is quite hard and
usually get 2 hits rather than one making it more damaging than most poor or
crewd weapons. This normally works best for me until I find a good weapon or
have increased the dual wield skill. For the other characters you pick up I
find necromancers are a really good second job since you can bring an enemy
corpse back from the dead to fight for you which increases your party size
by one and the ice blast skill is really powerful and especially since you
can target enemies heads and it often hits and kills straight away. Bard's
are another favourite for a second job for one of your collected characters
I put all the points into charm as when used it makes all the enemies just
attack each other whilst you pick them off and the more points you put into
this skill the longer they are charmed for and the more likely it is to
work.

Hope this helps

That's why if I have a character with the Short Swords and Dual Wield
skills I give him the Gobblin King's equipment. And I always try to
have a Necromancer on hand for Ice Blast and later summoning Ogmok
since his axes can usually get me past most of the rest of what you
meet between him and the last boss.

Yep agree, I always go the goblin king route and via go mog as both
characters are very powerful skeletons when you raise from the dead to join
your party. even if you don't have a neckro on your team like you said the
weapons they carry are really good specially the axe.
