Knowing how to speak about your skills is an important skill in itself! Incorporate relevant examples of your skills into job applications and interviews to increase your chances of success when applying for jobs.

Skills sought by graduate employers include teamwork, communication, planning and organising, problem solving, and so forth. Some skills overlap with one another. Personal attributes that contribute to overall employability include commitment, adaptability, honesty and integrity, reliability, ability to deal with pressure, motivation, and cultural fit with the employing organisation.

In 2018, SB 297 states: It provides that, not later than July 1, 2019, each school within a school corporation shall include interdisciplinary employability skills standards established by the Department of Education (DOE), in conjunction with the DWD and approved by the State Board of Education, in the school's curriculum. Communication is a key part of any role. Being an effective communicator is a prized skill because of how wide-ranging it tends to be. Learn different ways to improve your communication skills in the workplace.

Whether you work in an office or remotely, managing your time effectively is important. When you do so, you can set and achieve more goals, reduce stress, and stay on track. Learn more about six time management tips to boost your productivity.

The nature of work can change over time. In fact, at many start-ups, change is a given. Remaining flexible in the face of change is a valuable skill to develop and continue working on throughout your career. Flexibility often means staying calm in the face of change, remaining positive, and trying to plan ahead where possible.

Resume: Use action words throughout your resume to highlight your employability skills by showing their impact. For example, mention how you strengthened teamwork or cultivated better communication. You can also use your resume skills section to lay out your unique strengths.

Cover letters: Ideally, your cover letter should expand on your resume. Use it to share anecdotes or examples of how your employability skills have impacted a project or team. Learn more cover letter tips with our helpful guide.

Communication skills - these are the skills required to transmit or receive messages accurately to and from other people by speaking or in writing, without misunderstandings. These skills include:

Not all of these areas will be required at all times in every job. However, you can be reasonably certain that you are likely to need them at some point in your career, and many of them will be needed every day.

If you are not sure whether you need to work on your interpersonal skills, or which particular areas to target, you may find it helpful to take our Interpersonal Skills Self-Assessment to discover your strengths and weaknesses in this area. This will allow you to focus on particular areas that need further development.

First of all, doing what you say you will do means being organised, and managing your time effectively. You need to know how long things will take, and that you have the time to do them to the required standard. You also need to be able to identify what to do first, so that if anything is missed, it is less important. Our page on time management explains how you can do this.

Being reliable also means being trustworthy and conscientious. For example, this might mean not leaving work (too often) when things still need doing. Trustworthiness and conscientiousness are both parts of self-regulation or self-management, which in turn is an important part of emotional intelligence. Self-regulation means that you have the self-discipline to do things that you may not want to do, but which you know are necessary.

Sometimes this is referred to as personal development, but that term is also used for a more formal process, of goal-setting, action and reflection. Whether you choose to make your learning process formal or informal, there is no question that the modern world requires all of us to continually update and revise our skills.

There are, inevitably, a wide range of skills that could be useful to employers. Each of us also has our own personal range of skills, and we therefore can each make a unique contribution to any organisation. Learning to recognise and use your skills appropriately is essential.

In 2016 I created a Professional Development module to help first-year students learn skills needed to help transition into university life. I introduced topics like emotional intelligence, goal setting, and time management. I like to think some of the information landed. But really, we were missing the practice piece.

This is but one example of how the practice of Jiu-Jitsu enhanced my wider life skills or employability skills. Below I select 3 of the skills employers seek in 2022, according to Forbes, and demonstrate how Jiu-Jitsu helped me to develop these skillsets:

Yet when I started entering BJJ competitions, I soon learned there is no place to hide. When you step up, you either win or lose. And to have this experience, you need the courage to be vulnerable. Experiencing losing is necessary to show you the holes in your game. Your job is to go fix those holes, actively learn from your mistakes, and try again.

Competing taught me how irrational and inauthentic my work faade was. We are all fallible. Being vulnerable to failure takes courage. I accept failure more readily now, with less shame, and more quickly switch to problem-solving mode.

We know that continuous learning, and acquiring new skills and knowledge, reinvigorate employee energy and career opportunities. While HR might assume this comes in the guise of a conference, workshop, or online training course, I would add a BJJ club membership to that list.

Jiu-Jitsu offers multiple benefits for the mind and body, including reduced stress, improved sleep quality, increased self-discipline, and a space to make new friends. Globally, organisations are investing millions in plug-in initiatives to improve employee well-being. I can attest first-hand that the personal benefits and continuous learning experience I gain from Jiu-Jitsu make me a more enthusiastic, confident person across all facets of my life, including work.

Depending on the job, communication means being clear about what you mean and what you want to achieve when you talk or write. It involves listening and being able to understand where someone else is coming from.

They also involve using social media, working with design or video editing software or knowing programming languages. Other technology skills relate to hardware, like knowing how to use EFTPOS, a cash register, a camera or a recording studio.
