Hey All,

I am glad to be a part of this group. I wanted to inquire if anyone
has experience in interfacing between SCM and HIS's? The proposed
design would be to generate HL7 messages from HIS and send it across
to the engine which would then convert it to a proprietary format for
the SCM and vice versa.

I would like to know what kind of HL7 message type would suffice the
requirement for New Item build (HIS to SCM), Stock updates (SCM to
HIS), Quantity on hand (HIS to SCM).

Your input would be highly appreciated.

Thank you,

Hadi

Just to be clear Hadi can you define HIS and SCM in your context? I know them as HIS (Hospital Information System) and SCM (Sunrise Clinical Manager). From reading your post I think you don't mean this exactly.

Hi Hadi,

I am taking that you are wanting to facilitate messaging between the
Hospital Information System that handles the billing and the Supply
Chain Management system.

If I am close, then it depends on what work flow you are trying to
facilitate.

For example, If I have say a Pyxis machine for medical dispensing and
I recieve the demographics from say Mckesson STAR and I dispense a
band aide then I want a charge if it is patient chargeable to be sent
back to the HIS?

Does the SCM not accept HL7 DFT P03 messages? Keeping in mind there
are several ways to approach the solution, one solution is to convert
the HL7 to the format needed by the SCM system.

Hey Lawrence,

I am sorry for being vague...you are right about HIS and by SCM i mean
supply chain management.

thank you,

Hadi

Hi Ej,

I really appreciate the prompt response and you are on the money with
the issue I am facing. The following are the answers to your
questions:

1) If I have say a Pyxis machine for medical dispensing and
I recieve the demographics from say Mckesson STAR and I dispense a
band aide then I want a charge if it is patient chargeable to be sent
back to the HIS?
-> There is no Pyxis machine or any dispensing solution available :).
The challenge is that the HIS has their Materials management module
that would communicate the new item build, to the SCM, if Pharmacy was
to build a drug. The HIS can generate HL7 messages but the SCM team
does not have the expertise to accept HL7 messages so they would want
the messages in their proprietary format.

2) Does the SCM not accept HL7 DFT P03 messages?
-> (Please read above) The Ideal way is to go with DFT^P03 message
types and i just wanted to make sure that all the SCM fields
requirements would be fulfilled and if there is any other message
types that I can suggest to the HIS interface personnel if their
system does not support DFT's (Don't Ask)

By now you would have guessed that i am working in a market that is
very new to integration and Healthcare integration has never been
considered to be an option :). Fear not they got me now :).

Thank you again

Manipulating the HL7 inbound message will not be a problem. The real issue here is the complexity of the proprietary format expected by the SCM.

If this is a simple form with a few variants, then it should be easy enough to define a data structure and a business operation in Ensemble that will send the message in the right format. Then you can use DTL to convert HL7 to your internal data structure.

If the proprietary form is complicated with lots of different message types and the mappings from HL7 has lots of different possibilities you will have a lot more work to do.

Hadi,

Thanks. I was just using Pyxis as an example as that and Lawson are
some that I have worked with in the past.

I agree with David, it depends on how complex the format is for the
SCM system.
