Is there any big difference between and MDM and an ORU? If a facility is using an MDM for transcribing reports can they change it to an ORU fairly easily?

Thank you!

I work on an interface where we convert MDMs into ORUs.  In our case, the unique document number (TXA:12) from the MDM gets copied into the OBR:3 (Filler Order Number) field of the ORU, we drop the TXA segment, and the OBXs are passed along with some ordinary transformation along the way.

But the real answer to your question is yes, there’s a difference – MDM is for notes/transcriptions, and ORUs are for results (which may contain descriptive text in the OBXs, or may contain discrete values).

Yes it can be changed and fairly easily too.  Especially if you have both doc types setup as two different schemas and both schemas have the necessary segments to accommodate the downstream applications.  The conversion can be done through the DTL process.  Inbound = MDM and outbound = ORU.
