G4S Employee Handbook: A Guide to Human Rights and Ethical Conduct

G4S, part of Allied UniversalÂ, is a global security company that operates in more than 85 countries and employs more than 800,000 people. As one of the world's largest private employers, G4S is committed to fulfilling its responsibilities on human rights across all of its companies around the world by applying the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (2011).[^1^]

This employee handbook is designed to help you understand and show respect for human rights in your daily work. It outlines the G4S Human Rights Policy and Guidelines, which are based on four international standards that have achieved broad consensus as a human rights baseline for all businesses: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1947), The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (1966), The International Convention on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (1966), and The International Labour Organisation Declaration on Fundamental Rights at Work (1998).[^1^]

By following this handbook, you will not only comply with the law and G4S's ethical standards, but also contribute to the positive impact that G4S has on the communities and societies in which it operates. You will also benefit from working with a company that respects your human rights and provides you with a safe, healthy, and inclusive work environment.

What are human rights?

Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person in the world, regardless of their race, gender, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, disability, or any other characteristic. They include civil and political rights, such as the right to life, liberty, security, privacy, freedom of expression, and fair trial; as well as economic, social and cultural rights, such as the right to work, education, health, food, water, and housing.[^1^]

Human rights are universal, meaning they apply to everyone everywhere; indivisible, meaning they are all equally important and cannot be separated; interdependent, meaning they are connected and affect each other; and inalienable, meaning they cannot be taken away or given up.[^1^]

Why are human rights important for G4S?

G4S plays a key role in societies all over the world by providing security services and solutions that protect people, property, and assets. In doing so, G4S interacts with a wide range of stakeholders, such as customers, employees, partners, suppliers, shareholders, governments, regulators, civil society organizations, and local communities. These interactions may have positive or negative impacts on human rights.[^1^]

G4S recognizes that respecting human rights is not only the right thing to do but also good for business. By adopting human rights best practice, G4S can:[^1^]

    • Enhance its reputation and trust among its stakeholders;
    • Attract and retain talented and diverse employees;
    • Meet the expectations and requirements of its customers;
    • Avoid legal risks and potential liabilities;
    • Improve its operational efficiency and quality;
    • Innovate and create new business opportunities;
    • Contribute to social stability and sustainable development.

    How does G4S respect human rights?

    G4S respects human rights by implementing the following steps:[^1^]

      • Committing to the G4S Human Rights Policy at the highest level of management;
      • Assessing the actual and potential human rights impacts of its activities and relationships;
      • Taking action to prevent or mitigate any adverse human rights impacts;
      • Tracking and monitoring the effectiveness of its actions;
      • Communicating and reporting on its human rights performance;
      • Providing access to remedy for any victims of human rights violations.

      This handbook provides guidance on how to apply these steps in practice. It also explains the roles and responsibilities of different functions within G4S to ensure human rights are respected throughout the organization.
