The language in OSX is set to English, the language in MS Word is set to English, and the spell checking dictionary in MS Word is set to English. Yet when I open a particular document (which was written in English, though I don't know what language the person who created it uses on their computer) and try to spell check it uses a Dutch dictionary and there doesn't seem to be a way to change that.

VS 2022 roadmap promised a built-in spell checker yet I'm not finding any settings under Tools->Options that match keyword "spell" nor do I see any spell checker like red lines informing me of bad spelling in any comments in code.

With this add-in you can review text through our style and grammar checker LanguageTool. LanguageTool finds a lot of errors that a simple spell checker cannot detect, like mixing up there/their, a/an or word repetition, and it can detect many other grammar issues. Currently, we support these languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Polish, Russian, Catalan, Dutch, Portuguese, and Ukrainian

Our grammar and spelling correction works across all variations of common language, for instance distinguishing between U.S. and British English. LanguageTool also features a personal dictionary for exceptions or words that you might commonly use but that are not found in a conventional dictionary.

A list will appear now on the right of your OneNote-window with all languages which can be used to spell check your text. Choose one of them (and close the list with the cross on right top of it otherwise this list takes a huge amount of screen space).

A customer would like it if a spellings checker is added to an existing Delphi application. The texts that need to be checked are in multiple memo fields and the language is Dutch, which tends to limit my options.
So, what are my options for adding a dutch spellings checker to a Delphi/WIN32 application?

(Preferably something not webbased because the client has no direct Internet connection.)

It doesn't have to be free! The customer will pay if it's possible. :-)

Addictive Software offers an option, but I prefer to have more alternatives.

In MS Word for example, you can mark different areas of the text as belonging to a selected language. Then spell check works across multiple languages. It would be nice if EMC could do something like that.

I use the @Son-of-A-Gun method if I need to, however, what I tend to do is NOT to spell check Spanish as my mother tongue and use spell check with Portuguese and then sometimes English, in other words I use spell check with the language that I am least confident with.
And finally as @Victor.David says the MS Word capability added to eMC would be a great addition.

The other is the keyboard option as I mentioned above. So whatever keyboard you are using, that language will be used for the spell-check. And if you change to another keyboard language, the spell-check will follow.

Hi Gary, I changed settings to automatic spell-checker with keyboard. I have installed two keyboard languages: Spanish and English and I can change between both with alt + Shift. But when I change language in my keyboard the automatic spell checker doesn`t change and remains the same (Spanish). How does it works? What I am doing wrong?

Spell checking Pennsylvania Dutch text can be difficult because of the variety of spelling rules employed by the various orthographies of the dialect. Writers often employ the Buffington-Barba orthography, which is generally detailed in their grammar. There is some uncertainty regarding the rules of their orthography, which has led to small differences in the spellings of words in works that follow their orthography.

I use the Microsoft SwiftKey keyboard so I can type in both English and Dutch simultaneously (without having to switch between them). This works great but the system spell checker still put red lines under all my words. I have set the spell checker to 'use system languages' but it only uses the first one in the list. If I select manually, I can only use one language. Is there a way to get multilingual spell check?

My experience has been that this may not be possible, but probably depends on which phone you're using. My current and past two phones flat out would not allow me to set SwiftKey as the global spell-checker. (I can autocorrect with it, but with two languages plus dialect plus slang in the "learned" dictionary... this is not especially useful.)

I would check that your default spell-checker is actually, or even can be, set to SwiftKey. On my current Samsung with android 11, the spell-checker setting is completely integrated and only available under "Samsung keyboard settings" (meaning I can only use the native Samsung keyboard if I want to enable it), while on the older Huaweis (android 6 & 9), it was called "Spelling correction," but the only selection possible was Gboard.

Edited to reiterate: N.B. that I'm specifically responding to the question as to "spell-checker" and not "autocorrect" (as it sounds like @metshein is referencing below), which (somewhat confusingly) are actually two different settings. The OP mentioned "red lines" below words, which is a spell-checking function separate from autocorrect, which can be enabled or not within SwiftKey.

I'm using Samsung Galaxy A7 and I have 3 languages in my keyboard and spell checker and it works just fine. Maybe like 1% of the time it might correct my Estonian word to a Swedish one but that's because the words can be quite similar. And I'm also using the Swiftkey keyboard so I guess it really might depend on the phone but it shouldn't..doesn't make much sense xd

Adding support for an additional language in Windows 10. (click on image to enlarge)To switch between languages in Windows 10 and Windows 8, use the language bar in the Notification Area of the Taskbar or use the keyboard shortcut Windows key + Spacebar.

Online-spellcheck.com makes use of all three approaches. We have one of the largest set of dictionaries, with thousands of rules and we use a statistical corpus to find even rare errors. And this not only for the English language, we check text for misspelled words and grammatical errors for over 20 languages.

As explained above, spell checking and grammatical improvements of text can be made using three different main approaches. Our online converter uses all of them. Our servers are also quite powerful with lots of RAM to store the large corpus. They are also constantly updated and improvements are applied. There is no need to install software on every device you own to proofread your text. Just open your browser on any device and you are set. And best of all, our spell checker is completely free.

No one is perfect and we do not claim to find every error in your text. That is just not possible with a machine-only check. If others claim they can do this automatically, it is just not correct. The last resort is always a human (and even this person may fail from time to time). Nevertheless our online spellchecker will help you find most errors and will also make suggestions for grammatical improvements.

We have included a feature where you can tag words that have been marked as being spelled incorrect or grammatically wrong by our system, but are nevertheless correct (e.g. names). If you have registered with us, this will allow you to mark these words and add them to your own personal dictionary. We will use this information for your further checks.
Furthermore, if you click on a word, we provide a dictionary entry with several possible meanings of said word.

Once we have received and checked your text, we will display the corrected text. During your manual review of the corrected text, you have several options to handle the information we produce. You can revert a change made by us, use our thesaurus to find synonyms or rearrange sentences. We also give some detailed explanation about why a word might be wrong and include examples. When you are satisfied, you can share your text with others by sending them the unique, non guessable URL to your friends, download the file in various formats (like PDF, DOC, TXT or ODT) or send the text as an attachment to yourself.

To write a text without any errors is difficult, even for experts. Our automated spell checker can help professionals, students, website owners, bloggers and writers to deliver almost error free text. Especially users that write in a language that is not their mother tongue will benefit from our online tool. It will not only help them to correct the text, but they will also get information, why the use of a word is wrong in the given context.
