The business manufactures custom built, premium e-bikes. The bikes look slick, employ sound effects, have a built-in battery (which is different from most e-bikes with removable batteries which is easy to steal,) and VanMoof offered innovative customer service such as Peace of Mind (theft protection and bike recovery via a Bike Hunter squad) and maintenance.

One limitation of VanMoof bikes is that they can be serviced only in dedicated shops. Until 2019, the company had only 8 locations, which limited their customer base. However, by 2020 the company expanded service hubs to 50 cities, including Paris, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Tokyo.

It all seemed to be lining up for VanMoof: their bikes were in demand, and biking was a growing industry. So it was unexpected to hear a few days ago that VanMoof has paused all sales and has had its executives depart, as reported by TechCrunch this Monday (10 July). At first, the company blamed the pause of sales on a bug in their system, then confirmed that pausing sales was intentional.

On the other hand, operating a service which passes over an encryption key costs money, and will have a business entity behind it. This entity can encounter financial troubles, and it might make business sense for it to stop operating.

Update: The new owners have announced details of the rescue plan, set to roll out in the first half of 2024. This will begin with replacement parts being made available to retailers, then new sales, and finally a VanMoof e-scooter. However, reports The Verge, the US situation is more complex. The rescue plan will come to the States, but the timeline is as yet unknown.

Site owner Seth had mixed views when he tried it in hilly territory, but I was impressed when I tested one in the much flatter territory of central London to try out the Find My integration. I especially loved the clean looks, in part made possible by offloading controls to an app.

A rival ebike company, Belgian company Cowboy, has stepped in to offer a solution. TNW reports that it has created an app which allows VanMoof owners to generate and save their own digital key, which can be used in place of one created by a VanMoof server.

If you have a VanMoof bike, grab the app now, as it requires an initial connection to the VanMoof server to fetch your current keycode. If the server goes offline, existing Bikey App users can continue to unlock their bikes, but it will no longer be possible for new users to activate it.

Not every device needs to be "smart". Whether you want to believe me or not, there are still many devices in this world that function just fine without an included app. In my experience, "non-smart" devices have generally been more reliable than "smart" devices. "Non-smart" devices don't stop working if the underlying server infrastructure goes belly up. "Non-smart" devices don't stop working if the accompanying app fails.

While I know some US readers roll their eyes whenever the EU is mentioned, this does strike me as a problem that the European Union is perfectly positioned to solve, laying down the necessary consumer protection legislation to mandate this type of solution.

The majority of the Allen School's computing resources are on "private" or "firewalled" networks, meaning that they are not directly accessible from off-campus locations. This is done for security purposes; it's harder for hackers to break into a computer that they cannot access. That said, the first section of this document will focus on the Husky OnNet software provided to the UW community by UW-IT.
