After moving to Pasadena, Texas, country boy Bud Davis (John Travolta) starts hanging around a bar called Gilley's, where he falls in love with Sissy (Debra Winger), a cowgirl who believes the sexes are equal. They eventually marry, but their relationship is turbulent due to Bud's traditional view of gender roles. Jealousy over his rival, Wes (Scott Glenn), leads to their separation, but Bud attempts to win Sissy back by triumphing at Gilley's mechanical bull-riding competition.
The Urban Cowboy soundtrack topped the charts in 1980, and cemented Travolta's status as a box-office draw. It was also one of the first (of many to come) soundtracks to pull numerous singles off of the album to great success.

The film brought attention to Pasadena and Houston, with celebrities like Andy Warhol and Jerry Hall attending the premiere. Mickey Gilley's career saw a revival, and the film's soundtrack sparked a music movement.
I compose a lot of soundtracks, most recently Hunger. I'm from Belfast and I was in that film heart and soul. I love becoming a cog in the director's vision. It's a truly collaborative thing. We decided Hunger needed something really emotional but totally unmusical. Not easy. I used a hurdy-gurdy, just a drone really. When it's good, the soundtrack serves the film, adds another colour. When it's great, it stands alone too. I recently went to an Ennio Morricone concert where a 180-strong choir sang his music for Cinema Paradiso. Not a dry eye in the house.
