Subject: Poetry workshop by Gieve Patel at British Library on Sept 15 & 16, 2012
To:
Two–Day Poetry Workshop
on 15-16 September 2012
British Council, Bangalore
in association with Toto Funds the
Arts (TFA),
is pleased to announce a two-day poetry workshop which will be conducted by
Gieve Patel.
About the workshop:
Patel will read a
set of master poems by some of the greatest poets from different countries
(translated into English), and some great poems written originally in English.
These poems will be discussed with the participants. Following the study
of each master poem, participants will be given time to write their own
poems, which may be based on some of the insights gained by the study of
the master poem. However, the participant will be encouraged to bring some of
his/her own life experiences into the writing of the poem. Patel will look
at the poems produced, and will discuss them with the writer and
occasionally with the whole group. The workshop is based on Patel's belief that
it is not possible to write significant poetry if one is not first a
reader of significant poetry. The workshop will encourage participants
to continue with their reading of good poetry in years to come. Should
participants have specific questions to ask about the writing of poetry, these
too could be discussed with the group at some point during the workshop.
About the facilitator:
GIEVE PATEL is a painter and writer. Of his three published books
of verse, the latest is Mirrored, Mirroring (OUP, 1991). His poems are included
in several anthologies in India
and abroad. Mister Behram and Other Plays, a
collection of his plays, was published by Seagull Books, Kolkata, in 2007. He
has been conducting poetry workshops for students at Rishi Valley
School, Andhra Pradesh,
for the past 18 years. His paintings are in public and private collections in India
and abroad. He is a recipient of several awards including a Rockefeller
Fellowship at the University of Chicago and a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship at Washington D.C.
Note to applicants
(between 18 and 35 years):
Since the workshop will have not more than 15 participants, we will have to
necessarily screen applicants. Please email ONE ‘finished’ poem
to tfain...@gmail.com by September 4 at the latest to help
us choose the participants. Once you are selected, you must send in your cheque
for Rs 1,600 (Rs. 1,400 for British Library members) made out to Toto Funds the Arts to the following
address: H-301, Adarsh Gardens,
47thCross, 8th Block,
Jayanagar, Bangalore
560082. Phone: 26990549/98806 23357.
Participants are urged to attend Gieve Patel's talk
(for which a separate invite will be sent out) on the evening of Friday 14
September at the NGMA. He will be speaking on the creative process, and this
will serve as an introduction to the workshop.
