A bit of advice for those about to retire. If you are only 65, never
move to a retirement community. Everybody else is n their 70s, 80s, or
90s. So when something has to be moved, lifted or loaded, they
yell,"Get the kid."

whisper, he asked the congreg
ation. "All who want to go to heaven，please rise." Everyone got up
except the snorer. After whispering "Be seated", the minister shouted
at the top of his voiced, "All those who want to be with the devil,
please rise."
Awaking with a start, the sleepy-head jumped to his feet and saw the
preacher standing tall and angry in the pulpit, "Well, sir," he said,
"I don't know what we're voting on, but it looks like you and me are
the only ones for it."

It is a song representing the unfortunate fate of coloured people.
They used to be free and happy.As it is sung,"The corn-top's ripe and
the meadow's in the bloom" ,"The young folks roll on the little cabin
floor,All merry, all happy and bright;" But their land is taken and
they were forced to leave their home and do hard work, or solen as
slaves. “The head must bow and the back will have to bend,Wherever
the
darky may go” In this song, the author conveyed his pity for them and
represented their home sick.“Weep no more, my lady” ,however,
conveyed
a kind of confidence. “A few more days for to tote the weary load,
till we totter on the road.” They had strong soul. They believed that
they will get their happy life back.
I liked this song and tried to translate it. And here it is.

Trilogy of Home
Ⅰ I’m a big, big girl, in a big,
big world
When I was small, home was easy to approach. I’m intimately
concerned and accompanied. Dad would take off my heavy schoolbag,
while mom would carefully cook a delicious meal. Life was like this,
simple yet snug.
Now I’m tall and a college student, living far away from my
little home. As long as a several-day vocation on the way, there will
be a message appears on my cell phone, “Will you go home? When? Are
you alone or accompanied?” Home became a symbol, an abstract and
misty
concept in my mind.
One of my room mates goes to Yongjing Country on Fridays and
back on Saturdays to take a part-time job. Sometimes she sends me a
message in the distance saying, “Is it going on well back home?” Home
is the dorm where I’m living in with those pretty, lovely girls who
are closest to my heart.
How many “homes” do I actually possess, in this big, big world!
Ⅱ It’s not a big, big thing, if you
leave me
It is painful for every young student who went on such a
journey
in universities, being far away from anything or anyone which he/she
was quite familiar with. At the first week after I came to
university,
I wondered how those elder students could behave that peaceful. They
talked and laughed. They hold books in their hands, walking at a
steady pace. They seemed really “at home” in the eyes of me, an upset
new-comer.
Studying and working fully filled in my schedule. I talk to
them
and hail them everyday. They are not strangers any more, before I
could realize. I merged into college life gradually, also before I
could realize. I suddenly see that I’m no longer lonely when I am
alone. I sincerely love my major, which in turn me more open and
optimistic. With a clear sense of what I should do and what my dream
is, I became more and more determined and not as upset as before. I
began to fell “at home”.
I’ve met situations where I was extremely exhausted, ashen and
weak yet understood by no one. Nevertheless, I am an adult now,
instead of a coward. Home will give me a warm hug but I can’t connive
myself in turning to my parents to seek for protection as long as I
meet troubles. I kept telling myself not to make my parents worried
about me. When you are ill, weak and troubled, telling them to your
parents would surely make yourself feel a little better, which would,
however, make your parents fell much more pain. I won’t be that
selfish any longer.
Ⅲ But I do feel that I’ll miss
you much
I’m not a superman who is strong enough.
Although I tried my best to hide my pain and let them see that
I’m happy and enthusiastic, thus will lessen their worries, I
couldn’t
control when I touched bottom. Home is still a place where I can let
out my poignancy that I’ve hidden for long.
At the year when I entered high school, an elder student, who
was admitted to Tsinghua University, was just graduated from our
school. He, along with some of his excellent classmates, gave us a
lecture about study methods. A student rose and asked, “What kind of
environment for study do you expect your parents to make for you?” To
which he immediately answered, “You are making a mistake. You should
consider what you can make for your parents, instead of expecting
them
to make things for you.” His words were followed by heated applause.
I can understand these words by now.
I’m growing up while my parents are getting old at the same
pace. Home doesn’t mean the accommodation under which you are
sheltered, or the people on whom you could rely, but those of whom
you
ought to take care.

Glad to meet you all. In the past days I had seen so much useful
materials that you selected. I liked the translated poems the most. I
think poem is the most difficult form of writing to translate.Because
it has rythem, and the meaning of them are usually vague and subtle,
with which only skillful and gifted translater can deal.Otherwise,
some of the meanings or feeling will be abandoned.
I'd like to share you one of my favourite poems. I can still remember
the feeling I had when I first read it, deeply touched, and I seemed
to be just awaken from a dream of clean sky and water,and the stories
happened there. I have found two editions of translation. You can
read and decide which one is better.

Exam is something which most students are extremely afraid of. It is
even referred to by some students as nothing but anxiety-makers.
Frankly speaking, everyone is worried and anxious before exams. Some
students are so worried and anxious that theycan't fall asleep at
night, which will lead to poor performance in the exams. This, in
turn, makes them nervous even when the exams are over.
If it is reasonable to be worried and anxious before exams, it is
certainly not reasonable to be so after the exams. What we should clo
is to relax completely. But when asked, some students say that they
really have no idea how to do so.
The following are what I usually do after exams. First, don't make
too big a deal about scores. Exam is only a way to test how much
you've learned about the subject. It enables you and your teacher to
know where your shortcomings lie. The world will not end if you fail
in one exam. It helps to relax yourself if you realize this. Second,
listen to some music. Light music or classical music would be the
best. The beautiful melody will bring you into a world filled with joy
and happiness. Finally, participate in any kind of sport games you
like. It will help you to relax both mentally and physically.

thought I have no talence on appreciating poem, I think the two
translations are both wonderful.They have their own characters. The
first translation are very relevant to the Chinese poem. I think the
tranlater want to translate it like the Chinese as much as
possible.Compared with the former, the latter more vividy and full of
emagination. so I like the latter more former.

Shredded Pork with Green Peppers Ingredients: 300 grams (0.66lb) pork
tenderloin 100 grams (0.22 lb) green peppers 5 grams (5/6tsp) salt 1
gram (1/4 tsp) MSG 10 grams (2 tsp) mixture of cornstarch and water
100 grams (7 tbsp) cooking oil 1 egg white 10 grams (2 tsp) cooking
wine 25 grams (1 1/2 tbsp) water Directions: 1. Cut the meat into
shreds 6 cm (2.4 inches) long and 0.3 cm (0.12 inch) thick and wide.
Put in a bowl. Add 1 g ( 1/6 tsp) of salt and stir until mixture
becomes sticky. Add the egg white and dry cornstarch and mix well. Cut
the green peppers into shreds of similar size to the meat. 2. Heat the
oil to 110-135ºC (230-275ºF) and stir-fry the pork shreds
until they are done. Take out and drain off the oil.
3. Put 25 g (1 2/3 tbsp) of oil in the wok and stir-fry the shredded
green peppers for one minute. Add the shredded pork, cooking wine,
salt, MSG and water, and bring to boiling point. Put in the mixture of
cornstarch and water to thicken the sauce. Take out and serve.
Features: The meat is white with a light pink tinge. While the peppers
are invitingly green. Taste: The shredded pork is tender and the green
peppers crispy. The dish is salty to the right taste.

He lost his arms in an accident that claimed his father's life--who was
the main source of support for the family. Since then，he has had to
depend on the arms of his younger brother. For the sake of taking care
of him，his younger brother became his shadow，never leaving him alone
for years. Except for writing with his toes，he was completely unable
to do anything in his life.
One late night，he suffered from diarrhea1 and had to wake up his
younger brother. His younger brother accompanied him into the toilet
and then went back the dorm to wait. But being so tired，his younger
brother fell asleep，leaving him on the toilet for two hours till the

one day，his younger brother wanted to live separate from him，living
his own life，as many normal people do. So he was heart-broken and
didn't know what to do.
A similar misfortune befell a girl，too. One night her mother，who
suffered from chronic2 mental illness disappeared. So her father went
out looking for her mother，leaving her alone at home. She tried to
prepare meals for her parents，only to overturn the kerosene3 light on
the stove，resulting in a fire which took her hands away.
Though her elder sister who was studying in another city，showed her
willingness to take care of her，she was determined to be completely
independent. At school，she always studied hard. Most of all she
learned to be self-reliant. Once she wrote the following in her
composition："I am lucky. Though I lost my arms，I still have legs；I am
lucky. Though my wings are broken，my heart can still fly."
One day，the boy and the girl were both invited to appear on a
television interview program. The boy told the TV host about his
uncertain future at being left on his own，whereas the girl was full of
enthusiasm for her life. They both were asked to write something on a
piece of paper with their toes. The boy wrote：My younger brother's
arms are my arms；while the girl wrote： Broken wings，flying heart.
They had both endured the same ordeal4，but their different attitudes
determined the nature of their lives. It is true that life is
unpredictable5. Disasters can strike at any time. How you handle
misfortune when confronted with it，is the true test of your character.
If you choose only to complain and escape from the ordeal，it will
always follow you wherever you go. But if you decide to be strong，the
hardship will turn out to be a fortune on which new hopes will arise.

修辞手段一般主要用于文学性写作中。但在大学英语的英文写作中有时也需要运用一定的具有英文特征的修辞手段，而且运用得好，会使语句生动从而增添语句亮
点。因此，掌握一些一般常用修辞手段对于实现语句亮点也是非常必要的。对于大学英语写作来说，主要应该掌握以下修辞手段，又称语句辞格，包括结构辞格与
语义辞格。对比、排比、重复、倒装等为结构辞格，转义、双关、矛盾等则为语义辞格。
1.对比正反对比就是要巧妙地运用对称的英文句式来表达互为补充的意思，因此恰当地运用反义词语往往是必不可少的。如果一旦所要表达的内容具有这种
情况，就应尽力选用这种对称的句式并选用适当的反义词语来加强语句，实现语句的亮点。
1）如“很多人很快就会发现，他们在物质上是富裕了，精神上却很贫乏”，可以这样达：
Many people will soon find themselves rich in goods，but ragged in
spirit.（注：句中rich in与ragged in，goods与spirit具有正反对比的关系和效果。）
2）如“利远远大于弊”，可以这样表达：
The advantages for outweigh the disadvantages.（注：句中the advantages与
the disadvantages具有正反对比的关系和效果。）
3）如“他们注意到了这些说法中的一些道理，但他们却忽视了一个重要的事实”，可以这样表达：
They have noticed a grain of truth in the statements，but have
ignored a more important fact.（注：句中have noticed与have ignored，a grain
of truth in the statements与a more important fact具有正反对比的关系和效果。）
4）如“这样做既有积极效果也有消极效果”，可以这样表达：
It will have both negative and positive effects by so doing.（注：句中
negative与positive具有正反对比的关系和效果）
5）如“我们既有与我们很为相似的朋友，又有与我们很为不同的朋友”，可以这样表达：
We have friends similar to us and friends different from us.（注：句中
similar to与different from具有正反对比的关系和效果）
2.排比英文中有时也使用排比句式，这种句式整齐而有气势，又不会使人感到单调。例如，如“读书使我们聪明，锻炼使我们强健”，可以这样表达：
Reading makes us wise while exercises make us strong. 3.重复英文一般讲求简洁，因此
为表达强调偶尔使用重复可以使语句的强调内容得到突出。英文的重复又根据被重复词语在语句中的位置分为句首重复、句尾重复、首尾重复、尾首重复等。
1）如“现在是忘掉过去一切的时候了。现在是言归正传的时候了。现在是为未来而奋斗的时候了”，可以这样表达：
Now is the time to forget everything in the past. Now is the time to
get down to the business. Now is the time to work hard for the future.
（注：此句为句首重复，重复部分为句首的now it the time to）
2）如“我们渴望成功，而且正在为成功而努力工作”，可以这样表达：
We long for success and we are working hard for success.（注：此句为句尾重复，重复
的部分为句尾的for success.）
3）如“我相信我们能够成功，我相信我们也一定会成功”，可以这样表达：
I am convinced that we can succeed，and Iam convinced that we must
succeed.（注：and所连接的两个语句的句首与句尾部分同时重复，重复的部分为句首的I am convinced that与句尾的
succeed）
4）如“我们现在生活在一个新的时代，而一个改革充满着风险与机遇”，可以这样表达：
We are now living in a new era，and a new era of reform is always
full of ventures and chances.（注：and之前的句尾与and之后的句首重复，重复部分为a new era.）
4.倒装这里说的倒装不同于前述非修辞性的语法结构倒装。非修辞性的语法结构倒装是语句的语法结构所限定的，没有自由选择的余地，只要运用需要倒装
结构的句型就要采用倒装结构。这里所说的倒装是指修辞性语义结构倒装，是进行强调的一种手段，它利用了语句句首（或句尾）的特殊位置。例如，如“充满着
风险与机遇的改革的新时代正向我们走来”，可以这样表达：

chances. 5.转义转义是一种对词语灵活运用的修辞手段，主要有比喻、拟人、夸张、反语、婉转等，比喻又包括明喻、暗喻、换喻、提喻等。

解其含义，但不是所有的事物都是可以用换喻来表达的）
4）如要表达“这里需要一个帮手”，英文可为：
A hand is needed here.（注：此句采用提喻，提喻的特点是用一个事物的部分来代表事物的整体或用一个事物的整体来代表事物的

5）如要表达“巨大的不幸笼罩着整个城市”，英文可为：

If you treat people with kindness and respect, they'll be more
flexible and responsive. We all want love and respect but sometimes we
don't want to give love and respect, especially when we are at odds
with someone and we're feeling hurt and angry.
If you want a better relationship with anyone "Stroking" is mandatory.
If you look down on people and treat them badly, they'll retaliate and
appear just as annoying and hostile as you expected. If, in contrast,
you treat people with kindness and respect in spite of your anger,
they'll nearly always be far more flexible and responsive to your
feelings and point of view.
Some people are resistant to this technique. "I shouldn't have to be
nice to him. He doesn't deserve it." is a common opinon. Others are
"I'm just too angry to be nice to her", "I can't think of anything
positive to say about him", and " Why should I be nice to her when
she's treated me like this". But if you decide to convey genuine
respect in the heat of battle, your efforts will be far more
effective.
How to use "Stroking"
* Give the other person a genuine compliment. Comment on some positive
quality or trait they have.
* Let the other person know that you like, respect, or admire them,
and value their friendship even though you're both feeling angry or
disagreeing with each other right now.
* Convey warmth and caring through your body language, showing that
you're interested, open and receptive, as opposed to frowning,
crossing your arms across your chest, and shaking your head in a
judgemental way.
But do you have to stroke people who really are jerks? Isn't it better
to be honest and let people know what idiots they are? The answer is
that you don't have to treat anyone with respect. You can respond to
people any way you want to. It just depends on the kinds of
relationships you want.
The Power of Admiration
Sometimes we all have to express negative feelings and tell people
something that may upset them. Stroking is invaluable in this
situation as well. We all have a deep need to feel admired and
respected. If you treat people with kindness and make sure that your
comments will never hurt or humiliate them, you can get away with
saying just about anything. If you have to criticise someone, but you
convey liking or respect at the same time, that person won't be so
tempted to get defensive and dismiss your comments.
Here's a useful exercise that will help you develop greater skill in
this technique:
Over the next week, make it a point to give out at least twenty-five
compliments. Make sure that you include friends, family, shop
assistants, and even strangers. I do this all the time. You will be
amazed at how people, even strangers will light up when you say
something next to them.

When will the moon be clear and bright?
