"English Word and Grammar" is an initiative taken by me to enrich our
English in the word and in the grammar front.

WORD OF THE DAY:

metrosexual - men living in cities ("metros") who considers themselves
to be 'sensitive' and 'romantic'.

No doubt my friend was born here in Delhi but he is not a metrosexual.

WRONG TO CORRECT:

WRONG: The majority of the appilcants is not qualified.

CORRECT: The majority of the appilcants are not qualified.

GRAMMAR: "Majority of " is usually followed by plural noun. Since the
noun in the above example is plural, the verb that follows must also
be plural.

Note: when 'the majority' is not followed by 'of', then the verb that
follows can be either singular or plural: The majority is of the
opinion that we must go on strike.
The majority feel thretened by the possible changes.

IDIOM/ Phrases

the boot is on the other foot - the situation is the opposite of what
it was earlier.

The Americans are realising that they can't get other countries to do
what they want them to. The foot is on the other foot now.
