WORD OF THE DAY:

mulct - \MULKT\

A fine or penalty - noun

transitive verb:

1. To punish for an offense or misdemeanor by imposing a fine or
demanding a forfeiture.
2. To obtain by fraud or deception.
3. To defraud; to swindle.

Police officers in many countries live a king's life by mulcting the
public in a variety of legal and extra-legal ways.

WRONG TO CORRECT:

WRONG: She behaved rather silly.

(1) CORRECT: Her behaviour was rather silly.
(2) CORRECT: She behaved in a rather silly way.
(3) CORRECT: She behaved rather stupidly.

GRAMMAR: Some words - brotherly, cowardly, elderly, fatherly,
friendly/ unfriendly, likely/ unlikely, lively, manly, motherly,
silly, sisterly, ugly, womanly - do not have corresponding adverbs. So
use either a different structure (2) or an adverb with a similar
meaning (3).
