Yes, ITfC is working with the recently released LTS (Long Term Support)
14.04 from Canonical. We hope to provide Kalpavriksha 14.04 to
participants in the STF-KOER workshops next academic year.

For Fonts, this may not be solved only by migrating to recent Ubuntu,
since the availability of good looking UNICODE fonts in Kannada is an
issue. this will be solved only when technical experts make UNICODE
fonts and release it (many of the windows fonts are not Unicode and wont
hence work on Ubuntu). We should use Unicode fonts only since the
Internet wont recognise non unicode fonts

Till then my humble view is that even if the Ubuntu fonts dont look so
good, we should use them since they are sarvajanika
Our children, even if not good looking, are dearer to us, than the
children of our neighbours!! so sarvajanika fonts which belong to us,
are better than good looking non sarvajanika fonts we may find on
windows... :-)

Thank you sir for releasing latest version of Ubuntu. I should be one of firsts to get and install Ubuntu.
  I raised and going to raise font issues time and  again to make everybody alert about this. This is the only issue that prevented libre office enthusiasts worry about its popularity.
  Meanwhile I have participated in a discussion in an Stf forum and commented on your post. I am a staunch believer in Linux mission and deeply moved by the slow progress of Ubuntu among Karnataka departments and dared to dash you the post. Please answer it. I posted the email 15 minutes ago.

Very sorry for a delayed reply, I have been out of office for most of
this month.
I fully agree that we need to keep raising the issues with ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ
ತಂತ್ರಾಂಶ so that our friends in the technical FOSS communities can work
to address them, this is our duty as well.

I agree the progress of ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ತಂತ್ರಾಂಶ in the Karnataka Govt
system/education system is quite slow, and much slower than what ardent
ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ತಂತ್ರಾಂಶ supporters like us will wish
However, long back, I realised that the process of adopting ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ
ತಂತ್ರಾಂಶ is like any other process of social change - it is very
difficult and complex since it challenges deeply held social beliefs,
practices and it is much easier to continue on existing paths .... thats
why even though we know that corporal punishment is bad for children,
some teachers may still use it out of habit and belief in it.
Hence we should continue to explain, persuade, advocate for ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ
ತಂತ್ರಾಂಶ , but be patient and accept it will be a long journey and we
must keep our faith that eventually we shall overcome....
