1. She feels stressed and miserable (148-149).
2. He kissed her on the shoulder and started to caress her (149-150).

1. Rather than try and get his wife back, he tries to cover up that she has done by having the house renovated and he let it known that they were taking a summer sojourn abroad (150-151).
2. She feels pleased, but she also feels alone and feels as though she has gone down in the social scale (151).
3. She reacted like a mother who had not seen her children in a while, she was happy to see them (151). It was the first time she really showed caring for her children.

1. She basically warns her to stay away from Alcee (153).
2. She asked Edna to promise her "to go to her when her hour of trial overtook her," (153).
3. Edna is upset because Robert had been back for two days already and had not bothered to come see her (155).
4. He acts like he does not want to be around her, like he wants to stay away (157).
5. He did not think his letters would be of any interest to her (156).

1. Robert got his tobacco pouch from a woman in Mexico, which further adds the tension between Robert and Edna becuase they love each other (159).
2. Maybe he said it to remind Edna that she has a husband and should not be with Alcee (160).
3. Alcee confesses that he loves Edna and she rejects him (161).

1. Edna ate her breakfast half-dressed, which shows Edna's freedom to look pretty for a man of the house, because there is not one anymore (162).
2. It further enforces that Arobin is in love with Edna, and it shows how attracted he is to her (163).

I picked this picture because when Robert and Edna are reunited, it gets really awkward between the two of them. Plus, you can't help but laugh when you see the Rock in a dress.

1.  Edna feels anxious and wound up, but tired and relaxed around Alcee (Chopin, 153-154).
2.  Alcee brushes her hair, caresses her shoulder and kisses it, all without any regard for whether or not Edna actually wishes to be touched (Chopin, 153-154).

1.  Leonce chastises Edna for her actions, although, more as one would a child for being impulsive rather than as a husband trying to save his marriage.  However, Leonce seems to realize te fultility of this, and so to avert any suspicions there might be of his "financial difficulties", Leonce arranges for his house to be remodeled and publicly declares that he is taking his family "abroad" while the renovations are being done (Chopin, 155-156).  What is truly interesting about all of this, is that Leonce could care less about Edna's motives, all that concerns him is the maintaining of appearances.
2.  Edna relishes in her newfound independence and freedom, "There was with her a feeling of having descended in the social scale, with a corresponding step which she took toward relieving herself from obligations added to her strength and expansion as an individual" (Chopin, 156).
3.  Edna has a marvelous time with her children (Chopin, 156).  Apparently though her obligations to her husband are taxing and boring, responsibility to her children is deliciously supplementary.  We can only hope that this might mean Edna is becoming aware of the consequences her sons may face from her various indescretions.

1.  Adele cautions Edna to be wary of Alcee, who is notoriously known for ruining the reputation of respectable women (Chopin, 160).
2.  Adele asks Edna to visit her more often, especially in times of need (Chopin, 160).
3.  Not only did Robert never write to her, or tell her anything of his whereabouts, but he did not call upon her though he had returned two days prior (Chopin, 162).
4.  Robert is very stoic and embarrassed; also avoidant, as if he would really rather not deal with Edna's interrogations (Chopin, 162-164).  Although, there is one moment where it seems that Robert loves her all the same, when his "eyes caress her with warmth" (Chopin, 163).
5.  Robert tells her that he "couldn't believe that my letters would be of any interest to you" (Chopin, 163).

1.  The tobacco pouch was a gift from a supposedly "beautiful" Mexican girl; you can imagine that Edna's imagination ran wild with her jealousy (Chopin, 168-169).
2.  Robert mentions Mr. Pontellier to remind Edna (and Alcee, probably more Alcee) that she has a husband, almost as though he is using Leonce as a wall between Edna and everyone else in the world (Chopin, 169).
3.  Alcee all but tells Edna that he loves her, and she blows him off (Chopin, 170).

1.  Edna is walking around the house, and eating breakfast, half-dressed.  She feels free to act as she pleases, judgement and consequences be damned, because there is nobody living with her to dictate her dress and behavior (Chopin, 171).
2.  At this point, Edna is being completely honest and free in her lust and sexuality for the first time in the book.  She knows that she is in love with Robert, but she believes this infatuation to be unrequited, and so for sake of comfort, and for sake of finding an outlet for all that pent up sexual energy, she looks to Alcee.  It has gotten to the point now that he can sense her lust the way a normal person might sense that their hand was on fire; and, let's face it, he's male, and infatuated, and thrilled with this turn of events (Chopin, 173).

This image is representative of the wall between Robert and Edna, the one she is desperately trying to tear down while he is running around like a chicken with his head cut off looking for more mortar and bricks.

1. Edna is miserable and tired (Chopin 148-149).
2. He invaded Edna's space by kissing her on the shoulder and by rubbing her on the head and neck (Chopin 149).

1. It is shown when instead of worrying about his wife, he worries about how this news will affect his business (Chopin 150). He attempts to cover this up by saying that their home was being renovated and that they were "contemplating a summer sojourn abroad" (Chopin 150-151).
2. Edna is pleased in her new house, she feels that "...having risen in spiritual. Every step which she took toward relieving herself from obligations added to her strength and expansion as a individual" (Chopin 151).
3. Edna was glad to see the children, she wept with joy and devoted time toward her children, actually caring for them (Chopin 151).

1. She warns Edna to be wary of Alcee, that "his attentions alone are considered enough to ruin a woman's name" (Chopin 153).
2. She also told Edna to not neglect her, to remember her when she needed someone or to have someone stay with her to protect her (Chopin 153).
3. Because Robert had already been back for two days and had not sought Edna out (Chopin 155).
4. Robert acts very uncomfortable and sheepish, and seems like he does not want to deal with Edna at the moment (Chopin 156).
5. His excuse is that he "couldn't believe that my letters would be of any interest to you" (Chopin 156).

1. The reason he tobacco pouch adds tension is because it was given to him by a woman while he was in Mexico, then Edna proceeds to interrogate him abut the woman and his dealings with her (Chopin 159).
2. He mentions Mr. Pontellier to remind Edna that she has a husband, though h probably only stated this because Alcee was in the room (Chopin 160).
3. Alcee might as well as proclaimed his love for Edna right in front of her after the conversation that they had, but then Edna rejects him and sends him off (Chopin 161).

1. She is eating breakfast only half-dressed, expressing the freedom of judgement and lifestyle that she feels entitled to (Chopin 162).
2. It shows that Alcee has recognized that Edna has the slightest feeling of love for him, and that he wants it to bloom like a flower (Chopin 163).

I chose this picture because in this section Edna is finally getting a grasp on her feelings, and this establishes a sense of freedom and judgement, that she can choose who to be with and what to do in her life.

1. Edna feels unsatified, confused, guilty, used and horrible, yet tempted (148-149).
2. Alcee kisses her on her upper shoulder and started to rub on her and hold her because he can feel her tentions (149-150).
 1. You can tell his superficial intentions because than try and get his wife back and work through it and figure out what is wrong with her, he wants to try to hide that she has moved out by having the house renovated and telling people that they were taking a summer cruise so he doesn't look like he doesn't have money(150-151).
2. Edna feels pleased and this is like her huge rebellion step to being her own person, but she also feels alone and almost doubts her life, and she also feels alone because she misses robert.(151).
3. You can tell that she missed them alot and that she was excited and  had not seen her children in a while, she was happy to see them (151). It was the first time she really showed caring for her children.
 1. She basically is concerned for Edna, and tells her Alcee is bad news and to try to stay far away from him and his little games. (153).
2. Adele asked Edna to promise her "to go to her when her hour of trial overtook her," When she is in labor with the baby. (153).
3. Edna is very depressed because Robert had been back from mexico for two days now and had not taken time to come see her (155).
4. Robert seems like he feels uncomfortable around Edna, and that her presents doesn't really flatter him. (157).
5. Robert thought that his letters would bore her, and that she would have no intent to read them so he didn't even try. (156).
 1. Robert got his tobacco pouch from a woman in Mexico,
which further adds the tension between Robert and Edna becuase they love each other (159).
2. Maybe he said it to remind Edna that she has a husband and should not be with Alcee (160).
3. Alcee finally tells Edna that he is inlove with her passionately and she doesn't feel the same for him, because of her feelings for Robert. (161).
 1. Edna ate her breakfast with barley any clothes on, this is another rebellion step that starts on Edna's freedom and another awakening that she is her own and that nobody can tell her what to do, she doesnt have to dress up for any man, espicallly her husband. (162).
2. This really shows how strongly Arobin feels about Edna, that he maybe even really loves her and it shows how attracted and connected he feels towards her.(163).
This picture represents the moment Endais reunited with her childern, at their grandmother's house. It shows the happiness she had to see them, and that really does miss them and love them!

Chapter  XXXI
1. Edna seemed absent-minded and maybe worried or stressed. Something on her mind was bothering her, "She seemed dishearted, and had nothing to say" (Chopin 153). Edna told Alcee that  she felt "chilled and miserable. I feel as if I had been wound up to a certain pitch---to tight---and something inside me had snapped" (Chopin 153).
2. Alcee has invaded Edna's personal space because "He stood up beside her and smoothed her hair with his soft magnetic hand...His hand had strayed to her beautiful shoulders, and he could feel the response of her flesh to his touch. He seated himself beside her and kissed her lightly upon the shoulder" (Chopin 153-154). He was touching and kissing her without her permission. It seemed that she felt almost annoyed because after he was touching and kissing her she responded, "'I thought you were going away,' she said, in an uneven voice." She seemed sassy when she was saying this, like she was telling him to go away.
Chapter XXXII
1. The incidents that show Leonce's concern with appearances are when he received the letter from Edna about the move and wrote her back with hopes that she did not act upon her rash impulse because he was worried about what other people would say (Chopin 155). In the daily papers, there was a notice that Mr. and Mrs. Pontellier were contemplating a summer sojourn abroad because of their house being remodeled (Chopin 156). He was trying to cover up the fact that his wife moved into another house for her own selfish wishes.
2. In her new home, Edna feels happy and satisfied, "The pigeon-house pleased her....There was with her a feeling of having descended in the social scale, with a corresponding sense of having risen in the spiritual" (Chopin 156).
3. During her visit with her children, Edna is glad and weeps tears of joy, "How glad she was to see the children! She wept for very pleasure when she felt their little arms clasping her..." (Chopin 156-157).
Chapter XXXIII
1. The warning that Adele gives Edna is to keep her distance from Alcee is "that his attentions alone are considered enough to ruin a woman's name" (Chopin 156). She says that he doesn't have the worst reputation, but that he may ruin hers.
2. The request that Adele makes of Edna is that "she made Edna promise to go to her when her hour of trial overtook her" (Chopin 160). She wants Edna to come and see her whenever she is in need of help or advice.
3. Edna is upset when she sees Robert at Mademoiselle Reisz's apartment because he had returned the "day before yesterday" but did not come to see her (Chopin 162).
4. Robert interacts with Edna by acting like he does not want to spend time with her or even be around her (Chopin 162-163).
5. Robert's excuse to Edna of not writing to her in his absence, "I couldn't believe that my letters would be of any interest to you" (Chopin 163).
Chapter XXXIV
1. Robert's tobacco pouch adds to the tension because it causes Edna to become jealous since he got it in Mexico from the beautiful Mexican woman (Chopin 168-169).
2. Robert mentions Mr. Pontellier because he wants Edna to remember that she is married and also to cause her to feel guilty since Alcee was present at this time when Robert mentioned that (Chopin 169).
3. Before Alcee leaves he tells Edna, "You know that I only live when I am near you" (Chopin 170). Edna asked in response, "Is that one of the things that you always say to women?" (Chopin 170). I feel that she said this because of Adele's warning and that she would not have responded in such a way if she had not received her warning.
Chapter XXXV
1. Chopin uses a clothing image to represent Edna's feeling of freedom, "Edna ate her breakfast only half dressed" (Chopin 171). She feels free due to no one living with her anymore and she can do as she pleases. She has nothing to worry of anymore.
2. This comment on page 173, has the effect of Alcee's emotions and feelings toward Edna. His love has grown into a type of infatuation.

This image represents that Edna has two men in love with her, Robert and Alcee. I used this image because Bella represents Edna, Robert represents Edward, and Alcee represents Jacob. Bella loves to be around Jacob, just as Edna loves to be around Alcee, but she uses him like a play toy of hers and really does not love him; it is an infatuation love. He is like a back up plan. Bella is deeply in love with Edward and cannot stop thinking about him, just like Edna is with Robert. They share a romantic love.

1. It was given to him by a girl, which suggests to Edna that they might have had an affair (168).
2. Robert wants to remind everyone, including Edna herself, that Edna is married (169).
3. He expresses his feelings for Edna (170).
1. She is only half dressed and doesn't care; others' opinions no longer worry her (171).
2. It suggests that Edna is finally beginning to fully open up to Alcee's advances (173).

This displays the scene where Edna, Robert, and Alcee are all in the same room together (except with two guys and one girl instead) (169). The elephant in the room is that Edna is still a married woman.

2. this selection seems to show the very sensual and intimate language that would be used between lovers.

This picture shows the fact that in these chapters Edna's situation gets worse and worse. her husband is shocked and is struggling to make sure their social reputation doesn't take a dive (148). also Alcee becomes more and more friendly while Edna's love is still with Robert (163).

1.) Edna feels miserable while feeling fulfilled and happy (148-149)
2.) Alcee constantly shows up to house uninvited and it really starting to make Edna mad. He also caressed her body and kisses her (153-154).
3.) The major one is that he tells Edna to tell everyone that their house is undergoing renovations to make it seem like they are not having problems (156).
4.) Edna feels that she has fulfilled herself by gaining her independence (157).
5.) She feels very happy and calms down a little bit (157).
6.) Adele says that Alcee is known to be a womanizer and that could hurt Edna's reputation (160).
7.) Adele would like Edna to visit her more (160).
8.) Robert has been in town a few days and she expected him to go looking for her the day he got back from Mexico (162).
9.) It is very awkward and Robert is rather conserved when he is with Edna (162-164).
10.) He said that he believed that Edna was not interested (163). However, this is a complete lie.
11.) It was given to him by a Mexican girl and Edna becomes very jealous (168).
12.) I think Robert mentions him to remind Edna that she is married and should not go chasing him or any other man for that matter.
13.) Alcee is being very clingy and over complimenting her again and she pushes him away (170).
14.) Edna is not fully dressed in the morning, expressing her new found freedom and accomplishment (171).
15.) This quote incenuates that Edna and Alcee have a VERY physical relationship.

I chose this picture because the vast majority of this selection is very awkward and tense moments between Edna, Robert, and Alcee.

Chapter XXXI
1. Edna feels miserable and stressed after the party (148-149).
2. He begins, like he always does, to caress her and kiss her shoulder which makes Edna feel uncomfortable (149-150).
Chapter XXXII
1. When Edna leaves to live in her own house, her husband doesn't try to get her to come back. Instead, he comes up with this story to cover-up the fact that his wife is leaving him by saying that their house is being renovated (150-151).
2. When Edna gets into her new house she feels alone. Also, she feels like she has gone down on the social scale because she left her husband (151).
3. Edna goes to see her kids when she feels like it, but when she does go to see them see actually acts like a good mother who hasn't seen her kids in awhile (151).
Chapter XXXIII
1. Adele basically tells Edna to stay away from Alcee (153).
2. Adele asks Edna to visit her more, especially when she's feeling down (153).
3. Edna was expecting this grand arrival from Robert when he got home, but he had arrived and stayed under the radar for a couple of days before he goes to see Edna. Of course, Edna is upset by this (155).
4. When Robert goes to see Edna he acts very stand-offish toward her, and like he doesn't really want to be around her (157).
5. Robert didn't think that Edna would really care about his letters, so that's why he didn't send them (156).
Chapter XXXIV
1. Robert got his tobacco pouch from another women in Mexico. Edna got jealous because she loves him, and this added to the tension (159).
2. I think Robert mentions Mr. Pontellier because he knows they shouldn't be together so he did this to remind her that she is still married, and that she shouldn't be with Alcee either (160).
3. Alcee tells Edna before she leaves that he loves her, but Edna rejects his love (161).
Chapter XXXV
1. Edna eats breakfast half-dressed because she no longer feels the need to dress up for a man anymore because there is no man and this makes her feel a sense of freedom not having to impress anyone (162).
2. This quote further shows that Alcee loves her, and it shows that he really is attracted to her (163).

This picture represents the love that Edna and Robert have for each other, even though it's wrong for them to be together.

2. Alcee kisses her and touches her neck and shoulders (149).
Ch XXXII
1. When Edna moves out, Leonce covers it up in the community by telling everyone that the house is being renovated (150).
2. Edna feels happier and stronger as an individual (151).
3. Edna was glad to see her children. When she leaves, she is upset but soon feels alone and forgets te feeling her children brought her (151-152).
Ch XXXIII
1. Adele warns Edna about Alcee's bad reputation (153).
2. Adele asks Edna to be there when she is in her "hour of trial"(153).
3. Edna is upset because Roert has been home for a while and did'nt even bother to visit her (155-156).
4. Robert tries to avoid as much confrontation with her as possible and feels embarrassed for his decision not to speak with her (154-156).
5. He thinks that his letters would have been unimportant to Edna and he did'nt want to bother her (156).
Ch XXXIV
1. The tobacco pouch was given to him by another woman whom he met in Mexico, which makes Edna jealous (159)
2. He tells Edna to write to Leonce about him, probably to remind both Edna and Alcee, even himself perhaps, that Leonce is still her husband (160).
3. Alcee tells Edna that he adores her (161).
Ch XXXV
1. Edna is walking around half-dressed because it shows that she feels at home and in control at her house (162).
2. Alcee noticed that Edna had opened her mind to the advances he had made (163).

This image represents the time that Edna spends with Robert when he first returns. Edna feels like they are the only people that matter in that moment, and abandons the thought of Alcee, Leonce, and her children.

Ch. XXXI
1. Edna feels disheartened and stressed. She had enjoyed the party, but Victor spoilt it, and she really felt very stressed and isolated (148-9).
2. Alcee has invaded Edna's personal space in many ways (148-150). In Ch. XXXI alone, he stays after instead of leaving, knowing full well that she will be very emotionally vulnerable. He looks the house's door, and keeps the key. He walks with her to the pigeon house; all the way, she is very concious of his nearness ("She looked down, noticing the black line of his leg moving in and out so close to her..."). He invites himself in; maybe she wanted to be alone. He has covered her house in flowers; maybe she didn't want them. And then, she's really tired and wants to be left alone; he says he will go, and then he sits there and strokes her hair and stuff. All in all, Alcee is always there, in her space; he is definitely pursuing her.
Ch. XXXII
1. Leonce's letter shows concern about keeping up appearances (150). But when he writes asking Edna to stay in the house, he is not worried about scandal. He seems himself, his good name, above all that. He is more concerned with the practical, the financial; he is worried that Edna living in a small house will indicate hard times for the Pontelliers, and "...do incalcuable mischief to his business prospects" (150). To avoid any scandal, Leonce sends plans for a renovation to the house to an architect and places a notice to that effect in the local paper (also saying that they'll be travelling over the summer, etc.); this serves as a pretext for Edna to be living somewhere else and the house to be all packed up (150-1).
2. Edna is "pleased" in her new house; it feels like home. "There was with her a feeling of having descended in the social scale, with a corresponding sense of having risen in the spiritual. Every step which she took toward relieving herself from obligations added to her strength and expansion as an individual" (151). Although she is not "better" off, she feels free, and having a house of her own is like the ultimate independence.
3. Edna is really happy to see her kids again; she has a nice week with them and enjoys her time in Iberville immensely. She seems to have really missed them. "She lived with them a whole week long, giving them all of herself, and gathering and filling herself with their young existence" (151). When she leaves though, they soon fade from her memory and she is sad again (152).
Ch. XXXIII
1. Adele warns Edna that Alcee's reputation precedes him; she is worried that the rumors about him and Edna are going to do some serious damage. Edna brushes this off. She really doesn't care (153).
2. Adele asks Edna to come to her when "her hour of trial" comes; she wants her friend to be there for her while she is giving birth (153).
3. Edna is upset when she sees Robert at Mademoiselle Reisz's because she wasn't expecting to see him. He seems cold and distant, and she also learns that he's been in town for a few days and hasn't gone looking for her (154-6).
4. Robert is very distant; it is extremely awkward between them. He does not seem to be interested in her at all, and their meeting is nothing like she imagined (156).
5. When she confronts him about not writing to her, and he gives some lame excuse about thinking she wouldn't care (156).
Ch. XXXIV
1. Robert's tobacco pouch adds to the tension. Edna notices that it is different, and it turns out that a girl he knew in Mexico gave it to him. Edna is jealous and acts very immaturely. Robert assures her that "There are some people who leave impressions not so lasting as the imprint of an oar upon the water" (159).
2. Robert mentions Leonce both to remind Edna that she is married and to test the waters, see how she reacts. It's like he's trying to see if she and Alcee have something going on (160).
3. Before Alcee leaves, he tells Edna that he "adores" her. It seems like he's trying to stake his claim with her, remind her that they have something going on (161). Interestingly enough, she says nothing back and spends the rest of the evening thinking about Robert.
Ch. XXXV
1. Edna eats her breakfast half-dressed. This is very telling of her emotional transformation. She is no longer bound by any societal code that would dictate dress or any such thing. She feels very free in her own house; she emphasizes that it is hers, and that she can act how she likes there (162).
2. That comment indicates that Edna and Alcee are having some sort of physical relationship, that he is fulfilling whatever sexual needs her marriage could not (163).

The tobacco pouch in this selection is a huge point of tension for both Robert and Edna. It represents the fear of and desire for change that Edna hypocritically both wants and opposes change, depending on how it suits her situation.
