Use parenthetical citations for each question. Add your image with an explanation at the bottom.
I will not give credit for partial answers as well as lack of a parenthetical citation. You also need to add your image with a description each time. Make sure you are capitalizing the first letter of the sentence - this should be a given. Your answers should differ from that of your classmates. You need to bring your own knowledge and ways of writing to the discussion board.

1. How does Madamoiselle Reisz react when Edna talks about her painting?
2. What is the content of the letter Robert has written to M. Reisz? What is Edna's reaction?
3. How do the actions and comments of Leonce and Doctor Mandelet illustrate the following theme: that men cannot understand women? Cite specific references/quotations to support this answer?
4. Connection: Do you personally think men cannot understand women and vice versa?
5. What does the doctor suspect but never say to Leonce?
6. How is Edna's father's dress and appearance characteristic of him as a person?
7. Describe the stories told by the following people during the evening. Leonce, the Colonel, and Edna
8. What is Edna's attitude toward her sister's wedding? How do her father and Leonce react?
9. What is different about Edna's attitude toward Leonce both before and after he leaves for the wedding?
10. Who is Alcee? Describe her behavior after her evening with Alcee.
11. Give examples of sensual language in Chapter XXV. What does this language evoke?
12. How does the relationship between Edna and Alcee develop?

1. M. Reisz appreciates Edna't persistance, a trait that Edna claimed
to have while painting and one that she expresses while talking to M.
Reisz. Therefore she allows Edna to read Robert's letter (106).
2. The letter mainly asked questions pertaining to Edna. She becomes
overwhelmed with emotion while reading the letter (107).
3. Doctor Mandelet says, "The mood will pass, I assure you. It may
take a month, two, three months-possibly longer, but it will pass;
have patience" (111). This quote shows that the doctor and Mr.
Pontellier don't take Edna's change seriously. They feel that women
should act a certain way, and do not accept the fact that one may
change for her own benefit.
4. Because men tent to have a predominantly male friend group, and
women a female group, men and women develop different patterns of
thinking that the members of each group can easily understand. Because
of the difference of thought patterns, it can be harder to decipher
what the opposite gender means when they act or speak a certain way.
However, I feel that the two genders are quite capable of
understanding each other when individual personalities connect well.
This is what forms strong relationships.
5. The doctor suspects that Edna is having an affair with another man (111-112).
6. His clothes make him seem appear larger and stronger than he
actually is, which shows that he takes appearance seriously (119).
Likewise, he takes his personality seriously, as can be seen by the
solemness he exudes while Edna sketches him (114).
7. Leonce tells a story about the good the past was, and the Colonel
tells a less uplifting story of the past. Edna's story was about a
woman who ran off with her lover to a paradise and was never heard of
again (117).
8. Edna doesn't want to go to the wedding, saying "a wedding is one of
the most lamentable spectacles on earth," (110). Her father and Leonce
feel that her actions, or lack thereof, are unthoughtful and selfish
(119).
9. She seems to be more doting to Leonce before he leaves, but when he
is gone she feels free and relieved (120).
10. Alcee is a young man who harbors affections for Edna. When Edna
realizes that she is beginning to like him too, she pulls herself away
because she feels she had almost betrayed Robert (127-129).
11. An example of sensual language in Chapter XXV is: "A quick impulse
that was somewhat spasmodic impelled her fingers to close in a sort of
clutch upon his hand. He felt the pressure of her pointed nails in the
flesh of his palm" (127). The language evokes excitement and a lack of
restraint.
12. Edna and Alcee begin seeing eachother at the horst races and then
have dinner with Mrs. Highcamp. At some point Edna and Alcee attend
the races alone and then have dinner together. After dinner they sit
by the fire and talk, which constitutes the climax of their
relationship (124-127).

The fireplace is where Edna and Alcee's brief relationship reaches it's zenith.

1.  Mdme Reisz tells Edna that being an artist requires "a courageous soul", and when Edna insists that she has such a soul, by offering her persistance as proof, Mdme Reisz laughs and allows her to read the letter she recieved from Robert (Chopin, 106-107).

2.  Robert's letter consists mostly of questions about Edna: how she is, what she is doing, ect.  In response, Edna is touched and almost relieved at this proof that he still cares about her, and she bursts into tears from the release of her pent-up feelings (Chopin, 106-107).

3.  Leonce is so absorbed in what he believes to be the "proper" way for a woman to act, he has decided that Edna's new behavior is a symptom of her insanity, which is why he goes to see Doctor Mandalet.  The doctor asks about her family and the company she keeps and, having decided that neither are factors in this "insanity" tells Leonce to let her do as she pleases, that it is simply a phase that she will grow out of in time (Chopin, 108-111).  What is shown here is that neither man takes their wives' behavior with more than a grain of salt and the result is unhealthy relationships all around.

4.  This whole section could easily be attempting to insinuate that men cannot possibly understand women, but I believe that what it is discussing is not so much about a lack of understanding as much as it is a lack of respect. Understanding comes from respect and communication and a lot of work and effort which, clearly, Leonce and Mandalet have not put in to their respective relationships. Mandalet's wife is mousy and weak, and so he believes that there is no problem despite the fact that he is obviously the dominating part of a very unhealthy relationship.  On the other end of the spectrum, Leonce could not possibly hope to understand Edna's behavior because he has not tried to on her terms; he has made no effort to have an intelligent conversation with her about it because he believes she is incapable of such things.  Likewise, women tend to brush men's behavior off as them just being male "idiots" and that they should just humor them (or they become utterly passive aggressive which is confusing for everyone because nobody is speaking clearly).  What it all boils down to is that we, humans as a whole, tend to use genders as an excuse for our behavior, we avoid dealing with each other, and when we do try to communicate we do not ever take seriously the other person's intelligence, and so it is impossible to acheive any sort of understanding.

5.  The doctor suspects that Edna has another man in her life (Chopin, 111).

6.  His clothes are intimidating and imposing, making him seem more of a threat than he actually is (Chopin, 113).  What we can take from this is that he is painfully aware of his own irrelevancy, and so he seeks to cover that up despite the fact that God and everyone knows he is a weakling.  He is the equivalant of a small chihuaha peeing on everything and barking at everything because he is trying to be a "top dot", when in actuality he is just annoying and more than a little pathetic.

7.   Leonce talks about his youth on a plantation, the Colonel of the war, and Edna tells a story of a woman who runs away with her lover and never comes back (Chopin, 117).

8.  Edna believes marriage to be "one of the most lamentable spectecles on earth" and she has no desire to attend her sister's wedding (Chopin, 110).  Her father and husband both desire her to go, though, and the result is a loud and nearly violent fight over the matter (Chopin, 119).

9.  Edna is adoring and humoring to her husband, and utterly relieved when he finally leaves (Chopin, 120).

10.  Alcee is a charismatic man that Edna met at the horse races with her father.  Alcee is also what you might call "flirtatious", if you wanted to be nice about it, and Edna finds herself drawn to that openness of sexuality.  Although, she draws away from it before the end of the evening because she feels guilty for betraying Robert (Chopin, 123-129).

11.  "Alcee Arobin was absolutely nothing to her.  Yet his presence, his manners, the warmth of his glances, and above all the touch of his lips upon her hand had acted like a narcotic upon her.  She slept a langurous sleep, interwoven with vanishing dreams" (Chopin, 129).  More than anything, the language of the chapter introduces the idea of Edna, now fully aware of her sexuality, and Alcee as a potential outlet for that sexuality, as painting is an outlet for her emotions.

12.  Edna and Alcee meet at the horse races, spend time with each other (telling stories and enjoying each other's company), and then Alcee attemps to seduce, for lack of a better term, Edna.  Edna refuses, albeit reluctantly, his advances out of guilt for betraying Robert (Chopin, 123-129).

The moment when Alcee shows Edna the scar on his wrist is also the first moment Chopin has blatantly introduced sexual tension (Chopin, 127).

1. Reisz is skeptical that Enda is truly determined or is able to become and artist (115).
2.Th contents of the letter from Robert mostly discuss Mrs. Pontelleir, "Though the letter might as well have been sent to you; it was nothing but Mrs. pontellier from beginning to end..." (Chopin 114). Edna reacts to this by bursting into tears (Chopin 116).
3. The doctor's and Leonce's actions represent the theme because of the details of their conversation. The talk about woman as if they are complex machines or beings that no one can control or understand. Such as when the Doctor states, "Woman... is a very peculiar and delicate organism.... especially peculiar. It would require an inspired psychologist to deal successfully with them... ordinary fellows... attempt to cope with their idiosyncrasies the result is bulging..." (Chopin 119).
4. I believe that it will always be hard for men to understand women. The two are naturally different and will always have certain divisions between them, so understanding has always been a concept that the two have always struggled with. Though it will be hard for them to understand another, I believe that it can be done; but it will require much thought and insight between the two.
5. The Doctor suspects that Edna is being distant and unfaithful, believing that she is seeing another man. This is is shown in the novel when is states, "The Doctor would have liked during the course of the conversation to ask, 'Is there any man in the case?' but he knew his Creole too well to make such a blunder as that..." (Chopin 120).
6.Edna's father dresses in a nostalgic way, very formal and reminiscent of formal army attire. This shows that her is almost stuck in the war, how nothing has compared to that power, control, and freedom and he wants to show that he is worthy of that (Chopin 120).
7. Mr. Pontellier old stories of his youth, when he was carefree and able to do what he wished. This relates to him because this is an example of his current behavior. He goes to the club to try and reclaim this carefree and unattached behavior that he once had as a child. The Doctor told stories of his dealing with women and love. This is an example of his belief of the relationship between men and women that he also shows when Mr. Pontellier seeks his advice. The Colonel shares stories about the war, when he was in power and had the freedom of authority and control. And Edna shares a story abut a young woman who leaves her family for a lover in the night.. Which is an example of her relationship with Robert (Chopin 123).
8. Edna refuses to go to her sister's wedding. Leonce does not interfere, following the Doctor's advice of letting Edna do her own thing. While the Colonel is furious, upset the Edna does not listen to his authority (Chopin 124-125).
9. Edna is relived and happy when her husband leaves the house, yet before she is kind and tolerant (Chopin 125).
10. Alcee is a young man who often attends the races with Edna. After her evening with him she feels attracted to him, yet is still consumed of thoughts of Robert (Chopin 127-132).
11. "There was a perpetual smile in his eyes, which seldom failed to awaken a corresponding cheerfulness in any one who looked into them and listened to his good-humored voice. His manner was quiet, and at tines a little insolent. Possessed a good figure, a pleasing face, not overburdened with depth of thought of feeling, and his dress was that of the conventional man of fashion..." (Chopin 127-128). This language evokes a picture of Alcee both physically and emotionally.
12. The relationship first starts out as friendly and harmless, but then elevates into a flirtatious manner, when they start spending more time together. But Edna still thinks of Robert (Chopin 127-1132).

1. She is not convinced that Edna has what it takes to be a true artist (115).

2. You aren't told the exact content of Roberts letter but you know that it is addressed mostly to Edna. Edna's reaction to the letter is and M. Reisz's music is the same feeling of awakening that she felt when she first heard M. Reisz play on Grande Isle (116).

3. Mr. Pontellier cannot understand Edna, this is shown by his statement that she does not keep up with the house work (117). Doc. Mandelet understands that people just feel bad sometimes and that maybe M. Pontellier is part of the problem. as shown by his question, "What have you been doing to her, Pontellier." (118). I believe that the only reason that it seems that men are unable to understand women, or more speificly Edna, is that society is to heavily influenced by christianity which, classically, encouraged self inflicted sexual oppression through purity.

4. Men can understand women and vice versa. It is my belief that the understanding between the two sexes in growing greater day by day due to the advances in scientific understanding and the modernization of religious morals.

5. The doctor suspects that Edna is in love with another man and is being influenced by a M. Arobin, who, at this point in time, I do not know anything about other than she is one of Edna's friends (124).
-ok I didn't expect Arobin to be a guy. I suppose that i could have missed his tittle in an earlier part of the reading.

6. His dress and appearance portray him as a man deserving of respect and obedience (120).

7. Leonce tells a light reminiscent story about his childhood. The Colonel tells a dark story of which he was a part of (a war story?). Edna tells a dark fictional story of two lovers who disappear forever (123).

8. Edna does not want to go to her sisters wedding because weddings are, "the most lamentable spectacle on earth." (118) Leonce is surprised by her view of weddings but does not push her to go. The Colonel is amazed that she will not go and tells her that her family will most likely never talk to her again (124).

9. Before he leaves for the wedding she seems to become very war to him. After he leaves she mildly misses him but is enjoying her freedom, peace and independence more (125).

10. Alcee is a fashionable young gentleman (127). Edna seems to be extremely satisfied and pleased by the evenings outcome and her new young friend (129).

11. "The excitement came back upon her like a remittent fever." (130) "He stood close to her, and the effrontery in his eyes repelled the old, vanishing self in her, yet drew all her awakening sensuousness." (131) This language evokes feeling of joy and intense passion, created by Edna and Alcee's relationship.

12. Their relationship developed as they spend more time together at the races, they share a dinner and talk to each other about their pasts. Eventaully Alcee oversteps his bounds and upsets Edna (131).

1. At first she doesn't think that Edna hs many traits of an artist, but then appreciates her persistence.
2. It is asking a lot of questions about Edna. While reading it and listening to Reisz's piano, she begins crying again.
3. The whole conversation i about how Edna has gone crazy, when really they just don't realize that all she wants is independance.
4. Well, i definitely think there's some kind of barrier there, but i don't think its impassable. I think that its just easier to relate to your own gender. I agree with Rachel that the barrier exists mostly because of friend groups, although i do think that men and women are hardwired to think differently about certain things.
5. I think the doctor suspects an affair.
6. I would say that he is very authoritative and old fashioned (by today's standards and back then's).
7. The Colonel and Leonce tell stories of the past, and Edna makes up a story about two lovers. I think it shows her new, more optimistic view of life and how she's more in the present than in the past.
8. She doesn't want to go because she doesn't support marriage anymore. Her father is very angry, and Leonce doesn't fight because of what the doctor said.
9. Before he leaves she is more caring towards him, and afterwards she misses him for a bit, but then relaxes and enjoys her time alone.
10. Alcee is a young man who likes Edna, and when Edna realizes she likes him too, she leaves because she is afraid of betraying Leonce.
11. "The afternoon was intensely interesting to her. The excitement came back upon her like a remitent fever. Her talk grew familiar and confidential. It was no labor to become intimate with Arobin." (127) The language is full of sensuous emotion.
12. They see ech ther at the horse races occasionally and eventually start going together, then start having dinner, and it acceleates from there.

My computer still won't let me copy-paste an image, but I tried to post one of a jockey on his horse because of the significance of the horse races in this section of the book.

1) M. Reisz thinks that is a good idea for Edna to paint, but believes that she can not judge Edna on her innate abilities because she does not know her well enough (106).
2) The entire letter is basically about Edna. He asks questions about how she is doing and writes down fond memories. Edna crumples the letter up and begins to cry (107).
3) The main thing that leads us to believe this is that Leonce has no idea why she is acting the way she does. After talking to the doctor, he and the doctor are still puzzled. However, many of the women in the story know how she feels.
4) I think it would be a gross generalization to say that ALL men do not understand women and that ALL women do not understand men. There are some that do and do not understand the opposite sex.
5) The doctor suspects that Edna is having an affair (111).
6) He dresses very showy and prestine. This speaks volumes about his strict and show offy personality. They make him seem strong and important; the way he sees himself to be (113).
7) Leonce tells an uplifting story about the good old days in the south and the Colonel contradicts that with a very sad and depressing one. Edna tells of a woman who runs away with her true love and never returns (symbolic?) (117).
8) Edna feels that she does not need to attend her sister's wedding (110). Her father is outraged and demands that she changes her mind. Leonce remains on neither side (119).
9) Edna is strangely affectionate towards him before he leaves but becomes indifferent to his existance after he departs (120).
10) Alcee is a man who blatanly shows affection towards Edna. However, Edna feels that she must be loyal to Robert and pulls away (127-129).
11)  "Alcee Arobin was absolutely nothing to her. Yet his presence, his manners, the warmth of his glances, and above all the touch of his lips upon her hand had acted like a narcotic upon her" (129). the language evokes a sense of excitement and a sense that there is no control.
12) They progress from casually seeing eachother to going on dates together and making time for eachother often (124-127).

I thought it would be quite appropriate to post the cheaters logo because Edna has now gone behind her husband's back three times and it seems that she will never stop. This section especially shows Edna's "cheating" side of life.

1. She is a little skeptical of her artistic ability (115).
2. The contents of the letter are about Edna, it asks how she is and stuff like that (115). When she reads it, she begins to cry (116).
3. Leonce does not understand that Edna is completely mentally sane, she is just going through a change in her life. You know he thinks her mental health is at risk because he asks the Doctor to come to dinner to observe her (119).
4. I personally think that most men do not understand women, but women understand men a lot better.
5. He suspects that another man is involved in Edna's life (120).
6. He dresses with coats that are heavily padded, which makes him look stronger, showing off his strong character (120).
7. Leonce tells a story about his childhood on an old plantation, the Colonel told a somber story, possibly of him during the war, and Edna told a fictional story she tried to play off as real about two lovers (123-124).
8. She does not want to go, she does not see the point in going. Leonce stays out of the argument between Edna and her father, who flips out when she makes it known she does not want to go (124).
9. Before he goes, she is mildly annoyed by him, but after he leaves, she enjoys her freedom, but misses him a little (125).
10. Alcee Arobin is a friend that Edna meets in chapter 25 (127). She becomes excited after her evening with Alcee, becoming overall satisfied (129).
11. "He stood close to her, and the effrontery in his eyes repelled the old, vanishing self in her, yet drew all her awakening senusousness," (131). This shows Edna's joy and passion that comes out of her.
12. The two of them start off as friends, but they begin to like each other, and by the end of the chapter, Alcee makes a move on Edna (132).

I chose this image because Edna's father the Colonel is described wearing a jacket with padded shoulders, which shows off his strength.

I posted this picture of a bridezilla because she represents Edna's sister when she finds out how her own sister doesn't want to intend her own wedding. And also how this could cause drama towards the family, and how Edna is taking a stand and still not going, no matter who it affects.

1. When Edna talks about her painting, Mademoiselle Reisz tells her that she has pretensions (Chopin 105). She tells Edna that she has the potential to be an artist but does not think she can become one so easily. "I do not know your talent or temperament. To be an artist includes much; one must possess many gifts ---absolute gifts --- which have not been acquired by one's own effort. And, moreover, to succeed, the artist must possess the courageous soul" (Chopin 106).
2. The content of Robert's letter to Mademoiselle Reisz were mostly questions about Edna (Chopin 105). This emphasizes that he still cares and has concern about Edna. She is overcome with many emotions and begins to sob (Chopin 107).
3. Leonce thinks his wife has changed into an entirely different person and has gotten lazy and spends all her time by herself. Doctor Mandelet illustrates the theme that men cannot understand women when he says to Leonce, "Woman, my dear friend, is a very peculiar and delicate organism--a sensitive and highly organized woman..." (Chopin 110). Doctor Mandelet acts as if women are some aliens that speak a different language, which would explain why men do not understand women. Doctor Mandelet tells Leonce he will go to see her and see what is "wrong" with her, '"Then I'll go around and see her," said the Doctor. 'I'll drop in to dinner some evening en bon ami" (Chopin 111).
4. I personally think that men and women can understand each other. We all have brains and we need to use them to observe and understand how each other acts and speaks. We are not two completely different organisms, we are both human beings, just of different gender. Gender does not control the way we understand each other.
5. The Doctor suspects that Edna is involved and having an affair with another man but does not tell Leonce. The Doctor wanted more out of the conversation, " The Doctor would have liked during the course of conversation to ask, "Is there any man in the case?" but he knew his Creole too well to make a blunder of that" (Chopin 111-112).
6. Edna's father's dress and appearance is a characteristic of him as a person because he dresses in clothing that are larger than he is to show strength and that he wants respect from others, "He was tall and thin, and wore his coats padded, which gave a fictitious breadth and depth to his shoulders and chest" (Chopin 113).
7. Leonce told a story of his past, of how glorious and free his youth was when he hunted and roamed the woods (Chopin 117). The Colonel told a story of a woman's love in his dark and bitter days (Chopin 117). Edna told a story "of a woman who paddled away with her lover one night in a pirogue and never came back" (Chopin 117). She had a descriptive part of where no one could find them and they loved it. They didn't have any plans for the future but just to be with each other.
8. Edna's attitude towards her sister's wedding is bitter. She refused to go to her own sister's wedding (Chopin 119). Leonce did not want to interfere and let her do as she pleased just as the Doctor told him to. Colonel argued with her and still did not convince her to go to the wedding. He finally gave up (Chopin 119).
9. Edna cried and was not consciously gratified that Leonce left for the wedding (Chopin 120). But soon after she was alone and found a radiant peace settle upon her. She took in a deep breath and a feeling of relief overcame her (Chopin 120).
10. Alcee Arobin was a man of quiet manner and who had a good figure and taste for fashion (Chopin 124). Edna's behavior after her evening with Alcee was restless and excited (Chopin 125). She almost could not control herself, she was becoming attracted to Alcee and they were begining to have a strong connection. She then tells Alcee that she does not like him and he becomes extremely upset (Chopin 128).
11. An example of sensual language in Chapter XXV would be, "A quick impulse
that was somewhat spasmodic impelled her fingers to close in a sort of
clutch upon his hand. He felt the pressure of her pointed nails in the
flesh of his palm" (Chopin 127). This example emphasizes the intense moment that they shared together. This moment is also an example of their connection with each other.
12. Edna and Alcee's relationship develops over the course of time that they spend together. They connect on a level that Edna has never connected with anyone else. Alcee makes her feel excited and like an entirely different person.

I chose this picture because of the moment when Edna had the quick impulse to clutch Alcee's hand. This was an important moment for the both of them because it showed the strong connection they shared.

1. Madamoiselle Reisz is disbelieving that Edna should become an artist (115).
2. The letter mentions and asks about Edna a lot so Edna persistently asks to see it (116).
3. Both men eventually attribute Edna's change to "a mood" that is just a phase that will pass. This shows that they believe that no woman should be entitled to change or independence (118). "Most women are moody and whimsical. This is some passing whim of your wife," (119).
4. I think women can understand men and vice versa, although for some that is more difficult than it is for others. The bond that forms when two people understand each other well is what makes any relationship strong.
5. He suspects that Edna is having an affair (120).
6. His clothes and appearance show that he wants to be perceived as intimidating. His personality is similar and he projects the sense that he deserves respect (120).
7. Both the Colonel and Leonce tell stories of the past and reminisce. Edna tells a story about a woman running away with her lover (123-124).
8. Edna really doesn't care about her sister's wedding and doesn't want to go. Her father and Leonce want her to go, and they start arguing about it (124).
9. Before he leaves, Edna tries to be caring and cater to him, but when he leaves she is relaxed and relieved (126).
10. Alcee is a man that Edna attends a horse race with and she enjoys his company but later on, she pushes away his affections, thinking of Robert (127-132).
11. "He stood close to her, and the effrontery in his eyes repelled the old, vanishing self in her, yet drew all her awakening sensuousness" (131). This language brings about a sense of passion between the two.
12. Edna and Alcee's relationship begins at the horse races, which they attend together, then they have dinner, and eventually Alcee becomes very upfront about how he wants Edna to feel about him and vice versa (124-131).

I chose this photo because the horse races are where Edna and Alcee met, which seemed quite significant in the last few chapters.

  1. She is happy that Edna is taking this step in pursuing her freedom. She is proud of her. She tells Edna that being an artist requires a courageous soul.
  2. It is almost completely about Edna. She is happy and depressed at the same time while reading this letter, as Robert is writing to Reisz instead of her because he wishes to forget about the woman he can not have.
  3. They both hear the stories she tells, and they see how she acts, but they can not figure out what is going on with her. Even to me the situation is quite obvious.
  4. It depends on the depth of our own minds. I personally think that everyone is different.
  5. The doctor suspects that Edna is having an affair.
  6. He is dressed very officially and seriously. Like someone who means business.
  7. Leonce tells stories of his childhood, well Edna's father tells stories of the war. Edna tells an exaggerated story of two lovers that run off to be together. She says she heard it from a friend.
  8. She does not want to go. Leonce says he will go for her, and her father urges her to go.
  9. She is fed up with him until a few days before he leaves, then she begins to almost wish he wouldn't go. But when he finally leaves, she feels at peace.
  10. Alcee is another man that Edna meets. She has an affair with him that night, and she feels guilty, but not towards Leonce. Towards Robert.
  11. The word "caressing" is used multiple times. This word evokes arousal and imagery in the reader.
  12. Edna basically takes advantage of Alcee, using him as a replacement for Robert.

  1. She tells Edna that art takes courage and talent and tries to determine whether or not she can one by asking her questions. She derives that Edna does indeed have the spirit (pg 112)
  2. It concerns questions about Edna.(pg 114)
  3. They both seem to support this idea. Dr. Mandelet quotes " Women are often moody and whimsical. (pg 119)
  4. I do think that there are some things that men and women will never understand about each other. Certain ideas, seemingly, can only be generated by one gender while the other half of us are completely incapable of making such connections. We must always be aware of this when we are criticizing someone of the opposite gender. But to say that men will never understand women as a whole is a broad statement. There are certainly people that I will never understand, and this has nothing to do with their gender, just as there are people of both genders who I can sympathize with and follow their thought processes perfectly. The same goes with almost every person in the world.
  5. The doctor suspects that there is another man involved in Edna's life. (pg 120)
  6. His clothes and attitude make him seem gruff and burly, more so than he actually is. (Pg 122)
  7. Leonce talks fondly of the plantation, The colonel talks of the "dark and bitter days" and Edna tells of a woman who ran off with her lover and was never heard from again.(pg 123)
  8. Edna feels that a wedding is nothing to celebrate. Her father and husband are both outraged by her radical statements.(pg 125)
  9. Her emotions are fickle. She is sick of him before he goes, and as he leaves she almost wishes he wouldn't but when he does leave she is very relieved (126)
  10. Alcee is a man Edna met at a horserace and began to like. She does not want to be involved with Alcee, and finds that she is loyal to Robert.
  11. "A quick impulse that was somewhat spasmodic impelled her fingers to close in a sort ofclutch upon his hand. He felt the pressure of her pointed nails in the
flesh of his palm" (pg 130) I find that this shows an urge that Edna had to fight to control.
  12. After he apologizes to her, she sees him a couple more times and they fall in love and eventually they kiss one another.

I used the bathroom signs to show how there seems to be an impenetrable barrier between the two genders in this novel. This is represented by the white line that separates the male and female characters.

1. M Reisz reacts by telling Edna that she doesn't think that she has what it takes to be an artists or the deteremination (106-107).
2. The letter that Robert wrote to M. Reisz contains questions about how Edna is doing and stuff like that. When M. Reisz shows Edna the letter, Edna bursts into tears because the letter shows that Robert cares (106-107)
3. Leonce and Doc Mandelet have a conversation about Edna and her interesting behavior lately. The doctor says that this behavior is an example of her insanity and just to let Edna do what she wants. This conversation shows that men back then didn't really give a thought to women and their feelings, if they expressed their emtions in any way then they were deemed insane (108-111).
4. I think anybody can understand anyone. It's just that sometimes men and/or women don't want to take the time to understand each other. Of course, there are some things that as much as men would try to understand, they just won't like child birth, or periods. For the most part, if you really try to understand someone than you certainly will.
5. The Doc believes that because Edna is being so distant toward Leonce, that she has another man and is cheating (111).
6. Edna's father dresses in way that people will see him as powerful by wearing imtimidating clothes, but he is just doing this to put on a front (113).
7. Edna tells a story of a woman who falls is love with a man and runs away with him, the Colonel tells about the war, Leonce tells the story of his childhood on the plantation (117).
8. Edna doesn't want to go to her sister's wedding, but her father and husband pretty much beg her to go. She freaks out and begins to argue (110,119).
9. Before he leaves for the wedding she is loving and nice toward him and then when when he finally leaves she is relieved (120).
10. Edna meets Alcee at the horse racers that she went to with her father. Alcee flirts with Edna, and Edna flirts back, but then she feels guilty that she is portraying Robert (123-129).
11.  "Alcee Arobin was absolutely nothing to her. Yet his presence, his manners, the warmth of his glances, and above all the touch of his lips upon her hand had acted like a narcotic upon her. She slept a langurous sleep, interwoven with vanishing dreams" (129). This lanugage and this quote show that Edna has been fully awakened in her sexuality.
12. They meet at the horse races, and then Alcee trys to seduce Edna, but Edna feels gulity because of Robert (123-129).
This image represents the first time that Alcee and Edna show any sexual stuff toward each other.

1. She didn't encourage her like others, she said a painter requires "absolute gifts" and "courageous soul".(106)
2. The content of this letter are all about Edna, like "Have you seen Mrs. Pontellier?", "How is she looking?". Edna was completely moved by the letter and began to cry.(104-107)
3. They have no idea about what Enda is thinking or why she is doing all of these. "Woman, my dear friend...as especially peculiar", this sentence could illustrate it's hard to understand women. (110)
4. I think it is possible but hard to make a man understand a woman. For a long while, the society was basically led by men. Women play a role of accessory of men for years. With the awakening of women, they begin to resist this fact. But men cannot accept and understand that quickly. I think that's the reason.
5. He wanted to ask Leonce does another man get involve into the whole thing. (111)
6. He wore his coats padded, which makes him look stronger and bigger. (113)
7. Leonce's story is about his glorious past of youth period, the Colonel talked about his "dark and bitter days", but I don't know what exactly it is; Doctor told a woman's love story. Edna told a story about knid of herself. (117)
8. She doesn't like the wedding and even doesn't want to talk about that. Her father was mad at her and Leonce stayed out of the argument between Edna and his father.(119)
9. She was so nice to him before he left. Then she felt relieved after he left. (120)
10. Enda met Alcee in a horse race, he was attracted by Enda and flirted with her, and Edna enjoyed it. (125)
11. "A quick impulse that was somewhat spasmodic impelled her fingers to close in a sort of clutch upon his hand. He felt the pressure of her pointed nails in the flesh of his palm" this sentence reflects that Edna was fighting with her lust. (127)
12. They met each other in a horse race and began to like each other, but Edna doesn't like this feeling. She tried to control herself. (129)

I chose this picture because it's like the women's mind, which is so complicated and hard to understand.

1. Edna is almost self conscious of her painting. (pg. 115)
2. The content of the paper is about Edna, and she sees it and cries and crumbles up the letter. (pg. 116)
3.They don't think she is ok in the mind, and they don't know why she is acting so strange. the doctor came over to figure out why she is acting weird. (pg.117)
4.I think that men and women can think similar but can think very differently, it depends on the situation they are both in.
5.  The doctor thinks that Edna is in love with some one else or maybe even haveing an affair. (pg.124)
6.He dresses as a proper, older man, who wants to be respected and he feels important. (pg.120)
7. Leonce tells his story of being younger living in the south, the colonel tells a old and bitter story, and Edna tells a story kindof cliche to her own life. (pg. 117)
8. She doesn't want to go to her sister's wedding and ends up not going. her family is dissapointed in her and may not speak to her again. Leonce doesn't push her to go.(pg. 118)
9. Edna decides not to go to the wedding and Leonce is not on Edna's nor her family's side of feelings. (pg.119)
10. Alcee is a young nice-looking man Edna met at a horse race. she liked his company. (pg. 127)
11.  The language shows Edna's true feelings of excitement, sensuousness and no control of anything. pg. (127)
12. They just saw eachother at horseraces then became closer friends and then they started going out. He ends up going too far with her at the end of the chapter. (pg.129)
I picked this picture out because it shows what marital affairs can cause, a split in the marriage.

1. Reisz does not think that Edna is really ready to be an artist(106).
2.The content of Roberts letter is questions to Edna about herself. She starts to sob(107).
3. The actions and comments illustrate that theme because Edna was going through a very hard time and most of the time men dont understand or dont truly want to understand the reason.
4. I think it is very situation dependent. The person, male or female, has to be open to trying to understand the other.
5. The doctor suspects that Edna is being unfaithful to her husband(111).
6. His clothes are very serious and large, which make him seem more serious, scary, and intimidating than he truly is(117).
7. Leonce tells a happy story of his past, the colonel tells a sad story from the war, and Edna tells a love story(119).
8. Edna acts very selfish and refuses to attend her sisters wedding. Her father is angry and Leonce remains indifferent(120).
9. Her attitude is up and down with Leonce at the wedding, one minute she is all over him, the next minute she acts very cold to him(123).
10. Alcee is a man that she befriends. She becomes happy and excited from her new friendship(125).
11. "Alcee Arobin was absolutely nothing to her.Yet his presence, his manners, the warmth of his glances, and above all the touch of his lips upon her hand had acted like a narcotic upon her." It shows that Edna is very aware of her feelings and her new relationships(129).
12. The relationship is that they start off friends, but soon things lead to more(129).

****This photo shows that Edna is very two faced. One minute she is happy and sweet. Then the next minute she is angry and seductive.

1. Mademoiselle Reisz seems to support the idea, but also cautions Edna against being overconfident or pretentious. She tells Edna that she cannot just "become" an artist. "'To be an artist includes much; one must possess many gifts -- absolute gifts -- which have not been acquired by one's own effort. And, moreover, to succeed, the artist must possess the courageous soul'" (115).
2.The letter from Robert to Mademoiselle Reisz is mostly about Edna; when she reads it, she is overcome with emotion and leaves in tears (107, 116).
3. I think both men present different sides; there can be no question that Leonce does not understand his wife, but the Doctor seems to understand women more. This first part is evident in pretty much all of Leonce's interactions with Edna up until the meeting with the Doctor and also in the way he tells the Doctor of Edna's unbalanced temperament (117-8). The Doctor on the other hand is a very keen and quick man; although he first prescribes Edna's changed condition to simply being a woman (the super-spiritual intellectuals, the hereditary aspects, the marriage, etc.), he tells Leonce to leave Edna alone (118-119). Being a man in that time, he assumes it's just a phase, and that Edna will return to "normal," but he is also wise enough not to eliminate an affair (119-120).
4. I don't think a person can understand another's situation until they walk a mile in their shoes; whether or not this applies to a supposed gender barrier I cannot say.
5. The doctor suspects that Edna is having an affair (120, 124).
6. The Colonel is described as a neat, distinguished military man (121). His dress and appearance mirror his austere, traditional, and very serious character.
7. Leonce tells a story about Iberville, the country, growing up; the Colonel recounts his days in the War (123). Edna tells a story about two lovers who paddle off together into the night and are never seen again (123-4). Both men reminisce about the "good old days." Edna on the other hand is looking forward; her story is completely fictitious, but likely reflects her own dreams of running away.
8. Edna absolutely refuses to go to her sister Janet's wedding (119,124). She tells Leonce that "a wedding is one of the most lamentable spectacles on earth" (118). Mr. Pontellier is at first alarmed by this and wants to make Edna go, but on the doctor's advice, he lets her decide (118,124-5). The Colonel on the other hand is really angry and tries to get Leonce to force Edna to go. He yells a lot, but it's all blustering, and  she is adamant in her refusal (124).
9. Before Leonce leaves for the wedding, Edna all of a sudden starts acting like the perfect mother-woman, looking after his every need and being all sad and sentimental about his leaving. As soon as he's gone however, she is a lot happier; she feels peaceful and free and extremely relieved (125).
10. Alcee is a young man of fashion who Edna met at the horse races. He "admired Edna extravagantly," and she begins to harbor feelings in return. He has a reputation as a womanizer, but she really doesn't mind if he is "genuine" or not (127-132). After her evening with him, Edna is a little unsettled because she fears that she is betraying Robert somehow (132).
11. "And he bent and pressed his lips upon her hand as if he wished never more to withdraw them" (131). This image evokes the passion of the moment. Edna is a little bit frightened of the intensity of her attraction to Alcee; she also feels like she is being unfaithful to Robert. But Alcee seems like a "narcotic" to her, and although she does not love him, she spends more and more time with him (132).
12. The relationship between Edna and Alcee becomes more serious; they spend a lot of time together and become closer. They go to the races in groups, alone, and then have dinner together (128-131).

This image of the horse is representative of this selection; Edna finds new power in her knowledge of horses. People listen to her, they value what she says, and she even comes into a small, independent fortune of her own through her winnings at the races.
