1. Edna allows Alcee to Speak to her in a doting and adoring way, as
is evident when he says, "Why have you introduced her at a moment when
I desired to talk of you?" (138). [does the ? go on the outside of the
parentheses like a period?]
2. Edna visits M. Reisz because it brinngs her comfort and she wants
to tell her her plans for moving (113).
3. Edna has decided to move because she said she didn't feel at home
among all of her husband's belongings or even being in his house
(132).
4. Edna plans to throw a "going away" dinner (133).
5. Robert is coming home (134).
6. Edna has not considered how her husband will react to her decision
to move out of the house (133). She also has not considered how to
handle her multitude of lovers when Robert and Alcee return.
7. Alcee and Edna kiss (139).

These represent the letters that are now Edna's only connection to
Robert. They refer particularly to the letter in which Robert says
that he is coming home soon (134).

1. As their meeting progress Alcee speaks in a very naive and jovial manner to Edna (133).

2. Edna visits M. Reisz when ever she feels inner turmoil because M. Reisz seems to calm her down and make sense of things (133).

3. Edna has decided to leave her home and move to another around the corner. She chooses to do this because she is attracted to the house and feels like she should be the one paying for the roof above her head (134).

4. Edna plans to hold a festive dinner before leaving her house (135).

5. Edna learns that robert plans to return to New Orleans (136).

6. Edna has not thought that Robert understands that he is not meant to be with Edna and is therefore trying to forget her for both of them (135).

7. The relationship outwardly seemed to advance, but inwardly Edna feels that she wasn't motivated by love (139).

This photo is a representation of Edna's continued awakening. Each of the new things that she experience broaden the manner in which she looks upon the world. For example, Edna feels desire and passion for the first time in her life when she kisses Arobin (139).

1. Edna allows Alcee to speak to her in a more intimate way. They become closer and talk in a way that mere acquaintances wouldn't, "He sometimes talked in a way that astonished her at first and brought the crimson into her face; in a way that pleased her at last, appealing to the animalism  that stirred impatiently within her" (CHopin 133).
2. Edna continues to visits Reisz for, "by her divine art, seemed to reach Edna's spirit and set it free" (Chopin 133). Sh feels free to be who she wants to be with Reisz, and no one else can make her feel this way.
3. Edna has made the decision to move down the street from her house into a new one. She decides to do this because she claims that she is "tired looking after that big house. It never seemed like mine, anyway- like home. It's too much trouble. I have to keep to many servants. I am tired bothering with them" (Chopin 134), but later  the novel states that "Neither was it quite clear to Edan; but it unfolded itself as as she sat for a while in silence... to put away her husband's bounty in casting off her allegiance.... but whatever came, she had resolved never again to belong to another than herself" (Chopin 135). So she really wants to move away from her husband and focus on herself.
4. But before Edna leaves, she decides to throw a grand dinner before she leaves the old house to the new one (Chopin 135).

This image represents the letters that Robert writs. The letters say that he is returning home, but this may rate future conflicts with Edna's dual relationships.

5. From his letter, Edna learns that he is returning soon (Chopin 136).
6. Edna has not taken into consideration, her current 'realtionship' with Alcee. These two relationships might turn into a conflict when Robert returns form Mexico.

1) "He sometimes talked in a way that astonished her at first and brought the crimson into her face". She allows him to talk to her more affectionately (133).
2) She likes her company and wants to tell her of her moving plans. She would also like to invite her to dinner and is hoping Robert had written another letter.
3) She decided to move into a new house. She does this because she feels that she needs to leave the house "in which a thousqand muffled voices bade her begone (140)."
4) She plans to have a grand dinner . Which actually turns out to be small.
5) Robert plans to come home "very soon" (136).
6) Edna has not even thought her about her husband's reaction to her leaving the house (137).
7) They end up kissing (139).
8) She realizes that she feels no shame or remorse for anything that she has done during her awakening (139).
9) She removes everything that she bought and starts removing pictures from the walls (139-140).
10) She tells Alcee to leave and he asks when he will see her next. She rudely assures him that he will not see her before the grand dinner (141).
11) Edna seems to be much more jovial and cheerful throughout these few chapters because she is leaving her old life behind and Robert is returning from Mexico.
12) Mr. and Mrs. Merriman, Mrs. Highcamp, Alcee Arobin, Mademoiselle Reisz, Mr. Ratignolle,  Victor Lebrun, Ms. Mayblunt, Mr. Gouvernail, and Edna herself (142).
13) The dinner is portrayed as gorgeous with good smelling flowers, new chairs, a new candelabra, and many other extravagant decorations (143).
14) Victor acts like he normally does; with no morality and no reserve (146-147).
15) Edna has finally become moderately happy and realizes that she does not want a grand dinner and would rather be alone.

I chose to include a picture of a dinner party. The dinner party that Edna had planned actually did not go the way she thought it would. She wanted it to be grand affair and assumed she would be having the time of her life. However, she was quite somber and the event was a bust.

1.  "He sometimes talked in a way that astonished her at first and brought the crimson into her face; in a way that pleased her at last, appealing to the animalism that stirred impatiently within her" (Chopin, 130).  Edna's relationship with Alcee is one based a lot around her newfound sexual appetite and curiousity, both of which Alcee is only too happy to feed with his words and, potentially, something more physical.

2.  Edna has very quickly gone through huge changes in both her emotional health, her sexual identity, and in her confidence.  Such changes are disorienting, and Mdme Reisz provides a kind of stabilizer to Edna: someone who is strong, respectable, honest, and always willing to give advice (Chopin, 130).

3.  Edna has decided to move out of her home, and away from her family, into a small apartment by herself.  At first, this seems to be another one of her latest whims, but in actuality it is Edna's way of seeking independence, seeking freedom, which she now believes is only obtainable if she has no one to hold her back (Chopin, 132).

4.  Edna wants to throw a "going away" dinner-party, which is really her way of announcing to the world her newfound self-awareness and saying a tacit "screw you" to any who would be opposed to her behavior (Chopin, 133).

5.  Edna learns that Robert is planning on coming home "soon", although his letters do not specify how "soon" this may be (Chopin, 134).

6.  Edna really has not really taken into account any of the potential consequences of her behavior: the effect it will have on her children, the social ostracizing, the fact that she has no solid way to support herself financially, not to mention the small matter of having not only an irrate husband to deal with but two potential lovers who do not know anything about each other.  In short, she just signed herself up for a great deal of heartache and screaming.

7.  Edna and Alcee share a kiss, and not just a friendly maybe kiss, a full-on "wouldn't-tell-my-grandmother-about-this" kiss which Edna describes as her "first kiss of her life" (Chopin, 139).

Edna has made a lot of rash decisions in the last ten pages or so that all have rather disastrous potential consequences if she does not prepare for what is inevitable, namely, her downfall from society (Chopin, 130-140).

10.She takes control by not listening and Alcee had done the work that she was doing all day also, he asked if he could do more work. "So it was he wo in turn mounted the ladder. . . is there anything more you let me do."
11.Edna was happy and was smiling more htan she ever did before.(143)

"There were something extremly gorgeous about the apperance of the table, an effect of splendor conveyed by a cover of pale yellow satin under strips of lace work."(145) An example of sensory images is when the kids pilled upon the chair. . . as small children are sometimes hoisted at table upon bulky volumes."(145)
14.Victor was drinking and trying to sing. in the book they called him posing. "The effect of wine upon Victor was to change his accustomed volubility into silence."(145)

1. Edna allows Alcee to speak to her in a way of intimacy and adoration. He speaks to her has if she is the spark to his fire. He would flatter her when he talked to her, "He sometimes talked in a way that astonished her at first and brought the crimson into her face; in a way that pleased her at last, appealing to the animalism that stirred impatiently within her" (Chopin 130-131).
2. Edna visits Mademoiselle Reisz because she enjoys talking to her and wants to tell M. Reisz about her decision to move around the block (Chopin 132).
3. The decision that Edna has made is to move into her own small house around the block from her home with Leonce (Chopin 132).
4. Before leaving, Edna plans a dinner which she invites quite a few people to join, to celebrate her move to her new house (Chopin 133).
5. From Robert's letters, Edna learns that he is returning to New Orleans very soon (Chopin 134).
6. Edna has not taken Robert's opinion in to consideration of her moving into a new home. She writes a letter, "telling him of her intention to move for a while into the little house around the block" (Chopin 136), without even allowing him to share his opinion or thoughts on the move.
7. In the developing relationship between Edna and Alcee, they share a kiss (Chopin 139). He leaned forward and kissed her, "It was the first kiss of her life to which her nature had really responded. It was a flaming torch that kindled desire" (Chopin 139). They shared a special connection during that moment.
8. After Alcee and Edna share a passionate kiss, Edna realizes that she doesn't regret it. "But among the conflicting sensations which assailed her, there was neither shame or remorse" (Chopin 140). She almost doesn't care, "There was with her an overwhelming feeling of irresponsibility" (Chopin 140).
9. Edna begins to move the things that belong to her from her old house into her new house around the block, "Whatever was her own in the house, everything which she had acquired aside from her husband's bounty, she caused to be transported to the other house, supplying simple and meager deficiencies from her own resources" (Chopin 141).
10. When Alcee visits her that afternoon when she is transporting her belongings into her new house, she takes control by telling Alcee that there is nothing he can do to help her move (Chopin 142). He asks her when he will see her next but she rudely responds with the answer of "It will be the day after tomorrow....Not an instant sooner," (Chopin 143).
11. Edna appears as a different person because she seems to be happier than ever and actually enjoying her life. She is begining a new chapter in her life and moving into a new home to enjoy time alone. She also becomes even happier because she finds out that Robert is coming home from Mexico very soon (Chopin 134).
12. The guests that attend the dinner are: Mr. and Mrs. Merriman; a pretty, vivacious little woman in her thirties; her husband; Mrs. Highcamp; Alcee Arobin; Mademoiselle Reisz; Monsieur Ratignolle; Victor Lebrun; Miss Mayblunt, and Gouvernail (Chopin 144-145).
13. The overall setting for dinner was gorgeous. There was a pale yellow satin under strips of lace-work cover on the table (Chopin 145). There were wax candles, yellow and red roses, and crystal that glittered (Chopin 145). The sensory image of smell was used when the author describes the full, fragrant roses and wax candles.
14. "The effect of wine upon Victor was, to change his accustomed volubility into silence. He seemed to have abandoned himself to a reverie, and to be seeing pleasing visions in the amber bead" (Chopin 149). Victor was not acting like himself, he seemed different and pleasing to the eye.
15. The quote indicates that Edna was happier than she has ever been and would have rather been left alone than to plan this dinner with all the guests that joined. She wanted to be alone in the peace and quiet harmony of the night.

I chose this picture because it is a wonderful representation of Edna's begining to the new chapter in her life. The woman in the picture is smiling which symbolizes Edna's happier and joyful life. The woman is also in the empty house with boxes representing that she is moving into her new home just as Edna did in the novel.

7. In the developing relationship between Edna and Alcee, they kiss (Chopin 139). "It was the first kiss of her life to which her nature had really responded. It was a flaming torch that kindled desire" (Chopin 139). They  felt a connection during that moment.
8. After Alcee and Edna share a kiss, Edna realizes that she does not regret it. "But among the conflicting sensations which assailed her, there was neither shame or remorse" (Chopin 140). She almost does not even care about it, "There was with her an overwhelming feeling of irresponsibility" (Chopin 140).
9. Edna starts to move the things that belong to her from her old house into her new house, "Whatever was her own in the house, everything which she had acquired aside from her husband's bounty, she caused to be transported to the other house, supplying simple and meager deficiencies from her own resources" (Chopin 141).
10. When Alcee visits her that afternoon when she is moving her belongings to her new house. She takes control by telling Alcee that there is nothing he can do to help her move (Chopin 142). Then she says that she is kind of too busy for him, "It will be the day after tomorrow....Not an instant sooner," (Chopin 143).
11. Edna appears to be a different person because she seems happier and to be enjoying her life. She becomes even happier because she finds out that Robert is coming home from Mexico soon (Chopin 134).
12.  Mr.
13. The overall setting for dinner was very nice. There was a pale yellow satin under strips of lace-work cover on the table (Chopin 145). There were wax candles, yellow and red roses, and crystal that glittered (Chopin 145). The sensory image of smell was used when the author describes the roses and candles.
14. "The effect of wine upon Victor was, to change his accustomed volubility into silence. He seemed to have abandoned himself to a reverie, and to be seeing pleasing visions in the amber bead" (Chopin 149). Victor was not acting like himself.
15. The quote indicates that Edna was happier than ever and would have rather been left alone than to plan this dinner.

8. After the kiss, Edna felt that "there was neither shame nor remorse" (Chopin 139). So she felt no regret for her awakening.
9. In order to carry out her plan, Edna starts to take things down quickly before her husband can say anything otherwise (Chopin 139).
10. When Alcee visits, she takes control by refusing to come down from the high ladder, for he thinks it is too dangerous (Chopin 140).
11. Edna appears as a different person because she is taking noon'es opinions besides her own into consideration, even when it concerns her safety. Also, she says that she will not Alcee until the dinner in few days (Chopin 140-141).
12. The guests that attend dinner are Mr. and Mrs. Merriman, Mrs. Highcamp, Alcee, Mademoiselle Reisz, Monsieur Ratignolle, Victor,Miss Mayblunt, and Mr. Gouvernail (Chopin 142).
13. The overall setting for the dinner is high class and luxurious, "... yellow satin... wax candles in massive brass candelabra... yellow silk shades... fragrant roses... silver and gold... and crystal which glittered like gems which the women wore... stiff dining chairs had been discarded for the occasion an replaced by he most commodious and luxurious which could be collected throughout the house" (Chopin 143). Visual imagery is shown with all of the extravagant and colorful decorations.
14. Victor was very rude and talked very inappropriately, which was to only be expected (Chopin 147).
15. It indicates that the guests were very loud and showed no care for being quiet at night (Chopin 147-148).

8.  Edna realizes that, though her behavior has been irresponsible, she feels no shame in her behavior.  In fact, her only regret is that her kiss with Alcee was not one motivated by love, but rather curiosity, lust, and spite (Chopin, 140).

9.  Edna moves all of her things, only the things that Leonce did not buy for her, from Leonce's house to her new home (Chopin, 141).

10.   When Alcee visits Edna, she is in the middle of packing up so that she can move, and he begins to irritate her.  She tells him that not only can he not help her, but that she refuses to deal with him until the dinner "not an instant sooner" (Chopin, 142-143).

11.  Edna's new self-confidence in addition to her beautiful and flattering dress make her seem strong and regal, almost like a queen (Chopin, 148).

12.  Alcee attends, Mr. and Mrs. Merriman, Mrs. Highcamp, Mdme Reisz, Victor, M. Ratignolle, Miss Mayblunt, and Mr, Goubernail are in attendence in addition, of course, to Edna (Chopin, 144-145).

13.  The setting of the dinner is very luxurious and lush: there is gold everywhere, Edna uses only the most comfortable chairs, the food is good, there are candles and flowers scenting the air; theoretically, this should be a nice and relaxing atomosphere.  For the most part, Edna's guests enjoy themselves and each other, as seen from the "Uplifting" atomsphere and the generally happy small talk that goes on between guests.  Despite all of this, though, Edna is consumed by thoughts of Robert and is anxious through the entire dinner (Chopin, 142-151).

14.  Victor is really behaving as one might if one had nothing to lose.  He drinks freely, ignores the requests and personal space of those around him, and basically throws all common courtesy out the window (Chopin, 149-151).

15.  You know how after listening to somebody yell for a long time, your ears ring afterward?  The same principal is being used here.  The dinner was stressfull, Edna didn't have any fun, nothing went according to plan, and at the end of it all her "ears are still ringing" from the horribleness of it all (Chopin, 151).

8. After the kiss Edna realizes that she is very much still in love with robert (139).

9. She only sends Leonce a letter and then immediately prepares to leave (139).

10. She takes control by not allowing this meeting to become romantic (141).

11. Edna appears as a different person because she is satisfied and fully follows her desires (139).

12. The guests that attend the dinner are Mr. and Ms. Merriman, Mrs. Highcamp, Alcee, M. Reisz, M. Ratignolle, Victor Lebrun, Ms. Mayblunt, and Mr Gouvernail.

13. The dinner had a very lavish atmosphere and all of the guests seemed to be exceptionally pleased and content. Sensory images are used to show the surreal serenity of the night, as shown in this example, "It was the color of her skin, without the glow, the myriad living tints that none may sometimes discover in vibrant flesh." (145)

14. Victor seems to act calm and trance like throughout the dinner, nothing like his normal self (146).

15. The quote indicates that the break up of the dinner party is an extreme contrast to the fragile serene scene that it was just minutes before (146).

  7. “The effect of the wine upon Victor was, to change his accustomed volubility into silence” (149) He also later on tries to sing to the dinner party but he is shut down quickly in his efforts by Edna herself. (150)

1. As their meetings continue, their conversation becomes more intimate. "He sometimes talked in a way that astonished her at first and brought the crimson into her face; in a way that pleases her at last, appealing to the animalism that stirred impatiently within her" (133). "'Why should you bother thinking about it when I can tell you what manner of woman you are?'" (138).
2. Edna visits Mademoiselle Reisz because she is conflicted about Alcee and Robert and her personal life in general; she also wants to tell her about her decision to move house. "There was nothing which so quieted the turmoil of Edna's senses as a visit to Mademoiselle Reisz" (133).
3. Edna has decided to move out of her husband's mansion into a smaller house nearby. She says this is because she is lonely in the big house and tired of looking after it, but really she does this because she wants total independence from him. So long as she lives in his house, she is under his control (134). "Instinct had prompted her to put away her husband's bounty in casting off her allegiance" (135).
4. Edna plans to throw a big dinner party in the old house before leaving (135).
5. Edna learns that Robert is coming back "very soon" (136).
6. Edna does not taken a lot of things into consideration. Firstly, she does not know how Leonce will react to her leaving. He might come home or try to force her to stay -- all sorts of awkwardness there. Secondly, she does not consider that Robert might not love her anymore or that he might not want to have a relationship with her. And lastly, she sort of forgets about her relationship with Alcee; how's he going to feel when Robert comes back?
7. They get closer and closer; Edna lets him in (in more ways than one) and they eventually kiss (139). She describes it as "the first kiss of her life to which her nature had really responded" (139). Inside though, Edna does not feel any particular closer to love ("...it was not the kiss of love that inflamed her..." (139)).
8. After the kiss with Alcee, Edna realizes that she is not motivated by love but by sexual desire (139). She feels no guilt, only regret that it was not quite what she wanted.
9. To carry out her plan to leave Leonce, she quickly gets ready to move out of the house before any response from him can reach her (139). She also sets about securing a new place to live (140).
10. When Alcee visits her, Edna takes control by telling him to leave (141). From now on, he is going to see her on her terms; she will not let him dominate her.
11. Edna appears at the party as a queen, richly dressed and powerful, but alone (145).
12. The guests are Mr. and Mrs. Merriman, Mrs. Highcamp, Alcee Arobin, Mademoiselle Reisz, Victor Lebrun, Miss Mayblunt, Mr. Gouvernail, and Monsieur Ratignolle. Edna makes 10; Adele and Madam Lebrun cannot attend (142).
13. The over setting for the dinner is intimate but lavish and splendid (142). The atmosphere is serene and extravagant (143). Smell and sound are used to create a more accurate picture of the party; there is great music, a fountain, and some very powerful flowers (145).
14. Victor ignores Mrs. Highcamp and pays a lot of attention to Mrs. Merriman. He is very free and laid back, bordering on rude and uncorteous; as he becomes more and more intoxicated, the situation naturally does not improve; later Edna gets really upset when he sings "si tu savais" (144-147).
15. "The voices of Edna's disbanding guests jarred like a discordant note upon the quiet harmony of the night."  This quote indicates that although the dinner started well, the "harmony" was broken, mainly by Victor's insolence, but also by Edna's reaction. Nothing really went according to plan, and she did not enjoy herself. It was stressful, and the memory lingers like an echoing note. The disbanding of the guests is really the end of Edna's peace of mind.

This is an image of Pan, a Greek god of nature, chaos, and partying. That was pretty much Edna's party in a nutshell, so I felt it was appropriate. Victor could even be seen as the "pan" figure, especially at the end when he's drunk as monkey wearing that rose crown, singing, and generally being a creep.
