Manipulation in Julius Caesar
Thesis: In William Shakespeare’s play “Julius Caesar”, the
conspirators use manipulation to persuade others to join their cause
of killing Caesar. WH
CD: While talking to Brutus, Cassius says “I have heard Where many of
the best respect in Rome, Except Immortal Caesar speaking of Brutus
and groaning underneath his age’s yoke Have wished that noble Brutus
had his eyes” (1.2.60) GN
CM: Cassius tries to manipulate Brutus by telling him how great and
noble he is, and that most citizens of Rome think the same way. He
does this so that Brutus will be more open to his criticism of Caesar
and want to go along with their conspiracy. WH
CD:
“Brutus, thou sleep’st. Awake, and see thyself. Shall Rome, etc.
Speak, strike, redress! Brutus, thou sleep’st. Awake. Such
instigations have been often dropped Where I have took them up. “Shall
Rome, etc. Thus must I piece it out: Shall Rome stand under one man’s
awe? What, Rome? My ancestors did from the streets of Rome The Tarquin
drive when he was called king 2.1.46-54 MO
CM: Cassius exploits Brutus’ naive personality of putting Rome in
front of himself which causes Brutus to be swayed to the idea that if
they all killed Caesar then it would be best for Rome.MO
CD: In an attempt to convince Caesar to come to the senate house,
Decius tells Caesar, “Apt to be rendered for someone to say ‘Break up
the senate till another time, when Caesar’s wife shall meet with
better dreams.’ If Caesar hides himself shall they not whisper, ‘Lo
Caesar is afraid?’” (2.2.100) GN
CM: Decius attacks Caesar’s motives. He knows Caesar wants everyone to
believe he is powerful and fearless, so he tells Caesar that he must
come to the senate house or everyone will assume he is weak. Decius
uses manipulation by criticizing Caesar’s manhood. This causes Caesar
to come to the senate house, where he will later be killed. GN
