I must admit, it is going to be difficult to write an extensive response to a story that is only about five pages long. The short story was entertaining and compelling but there are some unanswered questions in my mind that I am trying to figure out after reading it. The very beginning of the story sets up an extremely disoriented feeling with all of the dot dot dots. From the very beginning the reader can tell that this person is not thinking very clearly or is dealing with some sort of mental dysfunction. I think that the most bizarre part of this entire story is the fact that the main character claims that he can basically predict the future. He says that he knew this entire car crash was going to happen from the way before the event even begins to happen. This brings up the question in my mind; well, okay, you knew that the accident was going to happen so why didn’t you try to avoid it? Because the character did not care about his own life. Maybe his reasoning for not trying to escape the accident was because he wanted to die. Or maybe he was so looped up on drugs that he could not predict the future at all but just claimed that he could because he was so far out of his mind. I can’t make sense of what his reasoning was behind claiming to predict the future but the idea was strange. After the accident happens the main character says; “I was relived and tearful. I’d thought something was required of me, but I hadn’t wanted to find out what it was.” This character makes it sound like he is responsible for something. As if because he had this accident pre-determined in his mind that he should be doing something to help these injured people out. In the very end of the story, from what I understand the reader discovers that the main character who simply hears voices in his head. His last line is peculiar as well. He is talking as if he is some sort of spirit or God. He says; “You, you ridiculous people, you expect me to help you.” This makes the main character sound as if he is control of everyone around him or that he has some sort of special powers. I don’t get it, a mental case that does drugs that is God? Very strange in my eyes. I really don’t understand all that well.
