Mathew Valkovic and Brian Burton are not in agreement with what Andrew
Bacevich states in his October 2008 essay issue of The Petraeus
Doctrine in The Atlantic. Mathew and Brian think that today’s military
should have extra training in addition to their basic military
training. Counterinsurgency delivers that extra social and foreign
culture training. Bacevich does not agree for soldiers to be trained
with the counterinsurgency method. Bacevich thinks that the military
should go back to more military training than anything else. I agree
with Burton and Valkovic’s point of view that the military should be
complimented with a supplemental counterinsurgency training to face
modern war issues.

Bacevich explains that the military has two different protagonists in
their war strategies, the crusaders and the conservatives. The
crusaders, dealing with Col. Nagl tactic, which entitles to not just
dominate land, but to change entire societies. And the conservatives
where Col. Gentile is concern that the obsession of counterinsurgency
will lead the Army to constabulary and ending the long war for a
different course as a possibility. Bacevich in Army magazine states
that the training in Fort Irwin has now switched gears that it focuses
mainly in counterinsurgency warfare. Bacevich wants military training
to go back to basics. He also questions if military decisions should
be made by others than military personnel. Bacevich make a good point
where he states that the most creative thinkers are not Generals but
mid-career officers like lieutenant colonels and colonels. So it will
devolved by default upon soldiers. Decision that are going to impact
the military and its members should be taken by military personnel ,
people that have been there and done that, people with military
experiences and at have the knowhow of how tings flow in the that
environment.

In Fort Irwin force-on-force training has been complimented with
counterinsurgency and given termed to full spectrum operations.
Valkovic and Burton state that the overall structure of the Army or
military has not been changed, but do admit that it might had adapted
to new or needed strategies, like learned counterinsurgency and that
certain functions like the artillery branch may have suffered as a
result to the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan. I agree with Bacevich and Burton and think that it is
important that the army has to balance the conventional combat role
and that being effective in an irregular operation environment is
important. To them Bacevich does give enough importance to
counterinsurgency strategy that is very so much needed as part of the
military training and he does not give an alternative solution for
America’s current predicaments. They agree that it is necessary to
maintain a variety of capabilities, both military and civilian to
operate across a range of strategic environment that is essential to
preserve US national security. They feel that America should prepare
to fight the war that is actually fighting now, not conventional wars
that it wants to fight or that it might fight some day.

It’s important for the Military to have basic training, but it should
have the option to adapt new and improve tactics to deal with
different war scenarios in different times and different countries.
Things are different now as compare to years ago just as wars are
different than the past ones. Soldiers have to deal with much more
now than before. It is not about just going in and killing the bad
guys, there are other things to take into consideration and other
tactics like knowing how you enemy thinks, acts and culture will help
keep soldiers alive and safe on enemy’s grounds. There can never be
too much knowledge when lives are at stake.

English 101
Essay 1.2 (REVISION) by Isaias Miguel

Original Essay:

In the New York Times, September 14, 2008 article “We Got Trouble”
Jonathan Tepperman asks for specific solutions to specific problems.
Tepperman criticisms expresses that Bacevich sees himself as a
“modern
Jeremiah” and that he is more of “a prophet than a policy maker.”
Tepperman states that instead of Bacevich criticizing Americans and
their consumerism on foreign goods he should focus on how the economy
got this way and how we can set it right with specific procedures or
steps. We need an answer to this specific situation. Bacevich
states
that “to Americans, the essence of life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness centers on a relentless personal quest to acquire, to
consume, to indulge, and to shed whatever constraints might interfere
with those endeavors.” That Americans have a motto of “whoever has
the most toys wins”, “shop until you drop,” “just do it.” And that
this type of attitude has affected the U.S. relations with the rest
of
the world, therefore it has “given birth to a condition of profound
dependency.” (With other countries and affecting foreign policy).
Tepperman does agrees that nothing will change if the “United States
remains dependent on foreign oil, cheap Chinese goods and infinite
credit.”

Revised by : Isaias Miguel

I choose this as because I felt as if the person pretty much
summarized the article “We Got Trouble” in the introduction. This
person bring out everything in the article and puts it into one single
paragraph. This was pretty much what should have been in the body
paragraph to refute against Bacevich. This is not an introduction to
an essay.

What? How about buying an imitation? What? what do you take me for?
After all is said and done, they go to Louis Vuitton store.
She is very glad. It looks so perfect on me! you gonna buy that for
me, right?
It's too expensive... I don't have that much money.
I no doubt you can afford buy it for me.
There is no choice nothing but paying by credit card.

Once he gets home, he founds his wallet is empty
Whereas, she is murmuring, “Most beautiful women are superficial, at
least I’m being up front about it.” And “He is not the one for me. What a cheap guy!”
