Will we be dropped if we can't make the Monday orientation?

Maira Repreza
Feb 4 2010 12:52 pm

I'm assuming that a Saturday orientation will be set up before Monday
comes
around. If you can't make the Monday or Saturday orientation I believe
you
run the risk of being dropped.
oc
Thurs, Feb 4 2010 6:51 pm

all:

The main point of the orientation is to make sure students are clear
on the course requirements and procedures. It’s more than a good idea.
Another important aspect is to make sure that sections are full of
active students. This is always important but especially so during
severe budget cuts. No one time will be best for all, but no student
trying to register wants to see all the classes they need closed if
some of those registered aren’t going to be active, and we can’t wait
a couple weeks to add replacements. Any registered student who misses
the orientation risks being replaced. Any registered student who
additionally fails to join this group and post the week 1 research and
journal will probably be replaced.

ok, so there is an orientation on Monday the 8th at 4:30, the exact
location
is yet to be determined? Is this correct?

According to the Welcome post, it is going to be held in AD318. I
haven't
seen anything else that states it has been moved from that location.

Saturday and
Monday!

Maira Repreza
Fri, Feb 5 2010 11:07 am

I believe the professor has not announced a Saturday class yet.
According
to his last email, in response to our group postings, the Saturday
orientation might be in the library because of limited room. Since the
library is closed next week's Saturday, it has not yet been determined
when
it will happen.

Hello OC, This is my first on-line class... please clarify the
following so I can do this right:

1) Aside from posting our normal ESSAY assignments, students are asked
to "respond to other students' posts" to remain active in class. Are
we to pick a "random" person and make a comment about their essay and/
or journal every week? Please better explain what you are looking
for. I'm pretty computer savvy, but this site/format is a bit
confusing.

2) At the orientation, you explained that our weekly "JOURNAL" is an
informal way for students to organize their thoughts for the essays
and that we can post in our own style of note-taking. Am I correct to
say that journals are not actually graded, but a way for us to
organize our thoughts in whatever way/shape/form?

Thank you!

answer...
the response to other students' posts is part of discussion, so as
during a class discussion, you select a student's post/comment/ides
about which you have some idea to contribute.

MS asked...

> 2) At the orientation, you explained that our weekly "JOURNAL" is an

answer...
from the syllabus:
"Journal activities are designed to help students prepare essays, so
students should focus on organizing and analyzing ideas into notes of
draft quality but not worry about revising notes into essay style."
also,
"Journal: 10% of course grade"
so, yes, the journal work is graded. that students should focus
on organization of ideas rather than grammar or paragraph structure is
not the same as the work's being ungraded. in all classes, students
should take notes and participate in discussions. here, it's worth one
letter grade for the course.

Professor O'Connell,
I have posted my week one journal and I cut and pasted it as you
requested.

When it posted to Google..it was skewed. It was typed properly, but
for some reason it was changed on the google site.

Should I email you a copy to show you what it looked like or is this
sufficient. I'm concerned because when we do the essays the same
thing will happen and you want a APA format.

RJ/all:
try experimenting with different font sizes if you want the lines to
break in the same places as in your word processor. i know how
discussions post, so don't worry about what this system does. if you
look at an APA format handbook, it will be an entire book with over a
hundred pages, but most of it won't be needed for this course. APA
format for this class means 1) in-text citations and 2) references
page.

I read both articles, I think I see the difference between the two.
Traub is very sarcastic about Goldhagen's ideas, that we all should
abandon everything and try to "save the world." It's obvious that
Traub disagree with Goldhagen and he criticizes his enthusiasm about
the topic and about the "revolution" that Goldhagen is trying to
start.
I'm not sure on the essay part. Do I write my conclusions from both
articles, and do I agree/disagree with one of the authors? Hope I
got it right. It's my first online class.

Good Morning,

I appreciate your response! Regarding my first question, I meant to
ask you if it was OK to comment on students *who are not in our
section*. For example, I responded to someone's journal in section
#3226 last night because no one from *my section* #0143 had posted at
the time.

Also--I kicked myself after sending my 2nd question about the journal/
grades. I already knew the right answer but I overlooked it.

Again, thanks for your reply!

Have a great weekend,

Thanks Melinda!

all:
from week 1 research and journal: "post your ideas to the group as a
discussion of this page by clicking discuss this page or reply to this
discussion below; please use reply rather than beginning a new
discussion so that everyone’s post will appear on one page—much easier
for all than clicking back and forth amongst different pages"

get used to this. single post discussion threads require too much
clicking and clutter the site. i will at times sort newly created
discussions under related threads. this also helps to make the journal
activities interactive discussions rather than a series of individual
soliloquies and to avoid the same questions' being posted repeatedly
when answers are already available.

don't be shy to ask questions, though. this online system, as any, has
its plusses and minuses and isn't always transparent. additionally,
getting started with any course includes questions. thanks to those
who helped answer other students' questions

Hey Scott, how you doing? Join the club! I've felt pretty frustrated myself with this weird online class. Just send me a text message if you've got any specific questions about how to do something, ok? My numbers 818 681 4132, the names Amy Cheon ( Don't be shy, I'm totally down to help out a fellow classmate)
First of all, have you signed up for the google group itself? If you don't know what I'm talking about, just read the syllabus, its explained on there.
So, now about the journals. There's a schedule of when we need to turn in our journals on the back of the syllabus that you should have gotten at orientation. But, just in case you've lost it, I've attached a pdf copy of it with this email! ^_^ This is week 3, so by the end of the week, you'll need to turn in research and journals 2-4, before  midnight on friday the 26th. You got that? According to the syllabus though, turning in the journals won't be on a weekly basis, instead just make sure to keep up with them (do them) and then you'll be turning all of the journals on the date of 6/4.

Definetely keep track of what you've turned in, and save a copy of those assignments, cuz this class is odd, lol!  I hope that helped Scott, if not just gime a text 2 molo, and i'll help you out. Have a good nite!

Ryota F, I'm not sure but I think the professor wants the students to do first essay draft for essay 3 as the same way we did for essay 2. You don't necessarily need to do exactly 3 pages. You can do more or less pages in the first draft for essay 3. Depends how much research you have done.

Professor,

Half-done draft due 5/7 means only 3 pages? Or 6 pages?
Please reply me as soon as possible.
Thank you.

I think you are right because last time he said it didn't have to be
exactly 3 pages he just wanted a "good start"

I have a new question, I was wondering if we can attach link to
download files in PDF format. I sketch/draw a tree map of the
characters and symbols from the play Titus Andronicus. I want to
discuss more about the conflicts, the theme of the play, and more
about it with the classmates. So it can help us write more in the
essay 3, and for more research. I'm just wondering if we could do
that. Or if we can join in to a chat discussion.

all:

thanks for helping each other. yes, if it not's too late, half done
means make a good start

as for turning links into loaded images, i think students have done
that with the google groups features, but i don't remember how to do
it in a discussion post. if you want to include an image file and
can't otherwise figure out how, go ahead and post the text with a note
saying you're also sending me an email with a file attached

o'c
