Essay 1.3
The crime of genocide is one of the most devastating human tragedies
throughout the history. And the word genocide refers to an organized
destruction to a specific group of people who belongs to the same
culture, ethnic, racial, religious, or national group often in a war
situation. Similar to mass killing, where anyone who is related to the
particular group regardless their age, gender and ethnic background
becomes the killing targets, genocide involves in more depth towards
destroying people’s identity and it usually consists a fine through
plan prearranged in order to demolish the unwanted group due to
political reasons mostly. In Goldhagen’s book he talked about some
ideas to prevent mass murders, and one of them was “target people
wanted for such offenses, and not only those indicated. “ (Worse than
war”, Page, 579). He also appeals to encourage those who kill or helps
to kill offenders. I think it is a good idea to prevent mass killing,
but now best even though I understand, that he wants people to avoid
thinking about killing anyone. We should know that if we don’t obey
the law then we have to get punished sooner or later, and this is how
we can live peacefully. It is understandable that that he thinks that
it is the best way to prevent murders, but I think, if we use
reasonable methods instead of using one main methods then it will be
helpful to stop mass killing. I know we shouldn’t set such things
aside but retribution of evil for evil just multiples the evil. If we
look at the prisons then we can see that every single day they are
capturing criminals, and it is becoming overcrowded, and any number of
criminals doesn’t decrease. I think, politics can even control the
grow atmosphere.
In the past two decades, the creature known as the serial killer has
captured the attention of the American culture, (NY Times, no author,
2008). With the dozens of books, and movies centered on serial
killers the term has become a trendy catch phrase, replacing earlier
terms such as "homicidal maniac". Fiction and screenwriters use the
term "serial killers" with such casual abandon that is seems the
meaning of the term escapes them. What will stop the serial killers to
stop killing innocent lives? Will it stop if we start to kill everyone
who is actually guilty, or a killer? Is this the solution to stop
serial killing? I do not think these questions answers can help to
stop it but it might help to prevent al little because if they get
punishment then, but it will not stop the serial killer from killing.
Not all people become kind or stop killing after the judicial trails.
For example, there are many people know about rule of gravitation,
and
consequences of falling, but it rarely keeps people from flying or
mountain climbing if they want it. People just think that they will
dodge this fate. Goldhagen offers to start a chase or hunt for such
people; he said "anyone who has the chance to kill those who commit
mass murder should do just that". ("Deterrence as the Only Prevention
for Genocide") but if we start to do it can we be better than these
criminals? I was researching on an Indian great person who loved the
country, and people, and always worked for others without harming
anyone with the weapons or anything. He chose to save his country
avoiding cruelty but using love, and humanity. I also don't like
atmosphere of suspiciousness and danger that can appear if people will
be given right to kill extrajudicial. Of course, I don't want to say
that we don't need to apply system of punishment and don't need to
persecute offenders, I simply would like this method is not the main
way for preventing cruelty in the world.
I like Goldhagen and his ideas because he tries to understand
that triggers such
things like killing, and mass murders because it gives us a chance to
find remedy or better method of prevention. If I compare society with
a live organism I would say that wars are similar to deceases. Medics
know that it is usually easier to prevent decease than to treat it.
And if we find any decease in patient we don't need to punish him but
to bottom that is wrong to fix it. I know that people usually (but
unfortunately not always) less aggressive if they have predictable
safe environment, don't need necessity primes and food, employed and
taught to keep an order, to obey a law and have ho prejudice. This is
work of politics to organize such life and make an order in country,
to raise an economics and to give people enough education and
opportunity to produce enough tools and food to feed themselves. As
Goldhagen fairly noticed "The nature of the political regime -- the
nature of the leaders themselves -- is absolutely critical for whether
this potential will be turned into an actual genocide." ('Mass
Slaughter Is a Systemic Problem of the Modern World') But I also want
to ordinary people not to support cruelty, it would be better than
kill somebody whom they don't like.
