  • In Macbeth play, the lady Macbeth also plays an important role to made macbeth seize throne and fallen. From Act1 scene 5, we can find she tried to do anything to convince Macbeth rebel. She told Macbeth:"Art not without ambition, but without The illness should  attend it. What thou wouldst highly, That wouldst thou holily…And chastise with valor of my tongue…which fate and metaphysical aid doth seem To have thee crowned withal."(page23 line17) She is clever and she perceived Macbeth's mental at once and try to encourage her husband do that outrageous thing. However, when she met the king, she would have the different attitude and be very servile. She said:''All our service, In every point twice done and then done double,Were poor and single business to contend Against those honors deep and broad wherewith Your majesty loads our house."(page 29 line 15) These words are respectful and even a little bit fawned. The behavior in scene 6 is much different with that in scene 5, they are opposite because lady Macbeth want to camouflage their purpose and lull the king. This difference also can prove she is evil but also crafty.

Lady Macbeth is definitely a key figure who helps Macbeth obtain his incredible power and maintain it by killing people in merciless ways. First of all, she is called by Macbeth as "my dearest partner of greatness" (page23 line9-10). Obviously, Lady Macbeth is beloved by her husband but also won his trust. She received the great news which saids Macbeth shall be the king according to three witches' prediction very soon. Macbeth had ever told her to "lay it to thy heart" (page23 line11-12). It indicates that his encounter with witches was still a secret known by few people. Fortunately, he chose the right one, Lady Macbeth is a really ambitious and ruthless woman who is smart enough to come up with conspiracies. When she heard Duncan, the king, was going to come at the end of the day and stay overnight, she expressed her determination of murdering him decisively,"O, never shall sun that morrow see!" (page27 line58-59). In order to achieve her goal, she told Macbeth what he should act to keep away from suspicion. She also tried her best to fawn on the king and showed her loyalty. In my opinion, she is cunning as a fox.

I agree with Chris, Lady Macbeth is a very scary women because right after she finishes reading the letter, she instantly knows what she must to do to become Queen. As Chris said, in act 1 scene 5, Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth to do wicked things to the Duncan and told him that he must kill Duncan before he leaves the following day. But in the next scene, she greets the king with open arms and says, "All our service, In every point twice done and then done double,Were poor and single business to contend Against those honors deep and broad wherewith Your majesty loads our house."(1.6.15) Lady Macbeth can change her personality very quickly, she changed completely from scene 5 to scene 6.

Lady Macbeth believes that Macbeth will be King but she thinks that she has to do this herself. When the witches told Macbeth his prophecy, the witches told Macbeth that he was going to become King. Lady Macbeth sees this as she has to be the one to make it happen but wouldn't it happen anyway even if Lady Macbeth did not plot to kill Duncan? LAdy Macbeth, even though she loves Macbeth still seems to "fear thy nature"(1.5.14). She believes that she needs to "pour my spirit in thine ear and chastise with the valour of my tongue."(1.5.24-25) Lady Macbeth sees Macbeth as too good a person to go out and fight to be King since it would be achieved by killing someone. Lady Macbeth thinks that she has to persuade Macbeth to kill Duncan because that will be the only way she will become King. LAdy Macbeth really needs to take a step back and revaluate her life. If the witches told MAcbeth he was going to become King, she doesn't need to interfere but still feels like she does so I think that this is going to mess up something in the future.

I agree with Alec, Alec, Tim and I went over this in class friday and it was very creepy. Lady Macbeth seems to have split personalities, when she is alone she plans wicked ad evil things behind Macbeth's back but when Macbeth is around she seems like any normal loving wife. The fact that Lady Macbeth has her husband Macbeth believing that she is sweet, loving and honest is even worse because now she can control him, and tell him things that aren't true and make him believe her. Now that she knows that Macbeth is going to become King she becomes more powered crazed and deceptive then ever.

I agree with your reading of Lady macbeth, but i don't think she shouldn't interfere with macbeth becoming king. Even though the witches had already told Macbeth that he will become king, Prince Cumberland has been told he will succeed the thrown. Without Lady Macbeth pushing Macbeth to kill him which evidence shows she will then Macbeth would not do it because he is too nice of a person. When Macbeth heard the news that the Kings son would become king he did think ominously however when the witches had first told him he would become king he said he hopes he didn't have to do anything bad to gain this power.

Hi all,

This is a good conversation. I'm happy to see you turning these ideas over in your heads.

Someone should start a topic on the second soliloquy in scene 5. That one really shows just how far Lady Macbeth is willing to go to become queen.

And don't forget that you need to look at Macbeth's speech in 1.7 and post before class in Monday.

Seems like most of you agreed with Lady Macbeth is a creepy one, but I'd like to say she is the evil side of Macbeth. We can let Macbeth and Lady Macbeth be the same person because they both want the power of the king/queen, but Macbeth is the kind side of this person and Lady Macbeth is the evil side of this person. Macbeth wants to be the king, but he still has his mind in his head: should he kill Duncan or not? Vengeance, kinship, loyalty, hospitality, honor, lack of courage.. all those are reasons that Macbeth didn't want to kill Duncan. But what Lady Macbeth had is power. For her, power is above than all of those reasons, she wants power more than anything, she defiantly knows what she wants and what she does, all she dose is show them out, and reach the goal. Lady Macbeth is act oppositely with how Macbeth act in this play, but they have the same goal.

I support your evidence Chris. In Macbeth, Lady Macbeth wants Macbeth to get the crown and be King. She encourages Macbeth to kill and clear anything in his path to being King. When she meets the King, she acts so innocent, as if she loves him. Lady Macbeth changes attitudes from Scene 5 to Scene 6. She becomes more innocent. I predict that Macbeth will kill King Duncan and Lady Macbeth will be the one to talk Macbeth into killing the King. Macbeth will be mad at Lady Macbeth after this.

I agree with Eli. Lady Macbeth is a very scary woman because she wants Macbeth to kill Duncan and crown himself. She has split character. From her soliloquy, we can find her evil and ruthless side, “And fill me from the crown to the toe topfull of direst cruelty” (Line 38-41, Scene 5). She would do anything in order to get the power and to be the queen. However, when she meets Macbeth, she acts like a normal wife. And in the next scene, when she meets Duncan, she pretends to welcome him with open arm, "your majesty loads our house" (Line 19, Scene 6). She wants to control Macbeth's thoughts and threatens him to the wicked things.

I agree with you and I also think he is a powerful role in the play. After knowing King Duncan would come to her castle, she said that "The raven himself is hoarse that croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan under my battlement"(37 Act 1 Scene 5) She wants Duncan to be dead so that Macbeth can be the king then she can be the queen. Lady Macbeth always wants Macbeth to do things in her way. She asks Macbeth that " As thou art in desire? Wouldst thou have that which thou esteem'st the ornament of life, and live a coward in the thine own esteem"(41 Act 1 Scene 7) When Macbeth is about to give up, Lady Macbeth used the way of asking questions to courage Macbeth to follow the plan.

Lady Macbeth is definitely a interesting character. Her power hungry drive for herself and Macbeth will not stop for anything. Her monolog gives off a evilness implying the killing of people who gets in her or Macbeth's way. When she learns about the witches prophesy of Macbeth's kingship you could say she saw the future. Her ideas of conspiracy against the future king give her a devious trait of other similar ones. She pushes Macbeth towards these wild conspiracies. My prediction is that he will go threw with them. It is interesting that Lady Macbeth sees only a violent path to the throne. In my prior knowledge of Macbeth I have heard of such violence and i think that I can conquer that Lady Macbeth is the instigator of such actions.

From reading through Lady Macbeth's soliloquies you definitely see the change of personality when she is around her husband and then when she is alone. She goes from loving wife to planning her way to queen in an instant, Eli put it well. Macbeth and his wife are clearly a good couple because they are both willing to do whatever it takes to gain the power they want. This includes murder which is also brought up in Lady Macbeth's speech. Together, nothing good is going to come of their hunger for power and Lady Macbeth seems to be able to form evil plans that will help them out with this as well.

Lady Macbeth is one of the lead roles in the play Macbeth. She is seen as one of the plays most frightening characters because crazy of her ambition and creepy appearance. She plots Duncan's murder but she thinks that Macbeth won't go through with it. I agree with Alec and Chris about lady Macbeth, she is very scary because she changed very much from 1.5 to 1.6; in 1.5 she was planning on killing Duncan but when she talks to him in 1.6 she acts like nothing is happening and she welcomes him with open arms. It appears she is bipolar and has two very different personalties. ONe thats sweet and loving and another thats wicked and sadistic. She is a schizophrenic.

I agree with Chloe for the most part.  As much as they are a good couple because they both have the same types of thoughts on how to become king and queen, Macbeth does questions his thoughts on killing.  I think that Lady Macbeth is pushing him a lot to kill Duncan.  It seems like just about every time he questions it, Lady Macbeth is there pressuring him to go through with it.  It's really obvious that her character has two very strong and opposite personalities.  She's also really good at hiding things.  I agree and support connors evidence when he brings up 1.6 how she welcomes Duncan right after thinking of how theyre going to kill him.  I think going forward in this play, well see a lot of Macbeth's ideas and what he actually goes through with mostly come from Lady Macbeth.
