Why did Macbeth see a dagger before he killed Duncan?
(The reason why I post it is there is two answer to this question, the first is it can show his ambition but I think it also can show his terror and he was afraid of killing Duncan.

There are two reasons that Macbeth had hallucination on dagger. First, it shows Macbeth's desire because he says it is "an instrument I was to use". He is using the dagger to kill the king. Second, it shows his fear of killing Duncan. He is only able to see the dagger but he does not dare to grasp it. When he mentions "Gouts of blood", he turns out to be afraid of this terror events.
