Do you mean asterisk? How about asterisks.

The ending " 's " denotes the possessive form, so asterisk's would
mean "belonging to asterisk".

I think the man means Asterix, as in The Gaul. As in Parc Asterix near
Paris. There was only one of them, therefore there is no plural. So there.

Ah, ok. But then again, if you had a lot of asterix figurines, or
something, you might have a plural then. In which case you might say
"I have many asterixes on my window sill". Or not. Anyway, I'd go
with Asterixes.

What's the plural of hippopotamus?

Foreign plurals. Hernandez for instance when referring to a possession of
Hernandez would be: Hernandez,' with the apostrophe. So: Astrix' sword,
for instance... There are reference books on the subject. There's
dictionaries and there's always Fowlers English Useage.

Are you sure it's not hippopotamuses?

Clearly you don't know the song.

"A regular army
Of hippopotami..."

Donald Swan's father delivered me. (He was a doctor, I hasten to add, not a
priest.)

No. Sometimes my messages get through. Most of the time they don't. I
still haven't figured out why, unless I have inadvertantly installed
Back Orifice on my computer, and someone is tinkering with my news
program. (I rescently made a troll real mad at me).
If, I have previously aquired Back Orifice, without my knowlege, and
if the original hacker didn't install a password, the troll may have
been able to detect it and start using it himself. That's the only thing
I can figure out.
My brother is a programmer but he is out of town for a week. So I'm
out of luck at the moment.

That Back Orifice is terrible. It allows a hacker complete access to
your computer, it's passwords etc. He can monitor your keystrokes as you
are making them, read your email and change your files. He can
reconfigure your computer to suit his whims.

For those who are unfamiliar with Back Orifice, you better study up
on it fast if there is important stuff on your computer.

Here's the link I got from my server, if you want to know more.

http://www.nwi.net/~pchelp/bo/bo.html

The link gives step by step instructions for detecting Back Orifice,
removing it and protecting yourself in the future.
They say it is spreading fast because there has not been enough
attention paid to it by the press. Having back-ups of files may protect
you from damage caused by viruses, but I don't think it will help
against Back Orifice. The hacker can always change any files on your
computer, if I understand right.

Hey - DON'T PANIC !!!! It's very easy to blame setup, programming and
operating faults on a virus. You seem to have read up on this virus (or
whatever thay want to call it), but you don't say whether you have actually
detected it on your system. Surely these people can, apart from inflaming
the paranoia which is prevalent in our computer society, detect the thing on
your own PC ? No ? Oh dear. I'm sure we all have problems with our Back
Orifice at some time or other, but I would suggest that you look elsewhere
for your solution.

Might I also suggest that this is not the ng for discussing comm programs
setups and viruses (virusses ? virii ? I feel another thread coming on)

Gerald, washing his monitor down with disinfectant (just in case - I read
this message in a ng once, and they said ...........)
