Jeff is one of those who believe that unless you've been baptised as an
adult, you can't be saved.

So what was Paul on about in 1 Corinthian 15:29, when he speaks of some
being baptised for those who have died?

I think it's Mormons who make a great deal of that. Note that Paul
doesn't advocate it, he just uses it as and example of what people are
believing.

Hi Mike

A verse that has often puzzled me, because I thought it meant that the
baptism was for previous believers who had died without being baptised,
but reading up a bit more it could mean that when some of the
Corinthians became Christians they felt they had to do it for relatives
and friends who had passed without knowing Jesus.

Which makes for another interesting topic.

Jesus own words verify that to be saved..... valid water baptism must be performed AFTER belief, to be saved.

"15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth AND is baptized shall be saved".
Mark 16:15-16 (KJV)

The best I can gather is as follows.
1 Corinthians 15:29.
"29 Otherwise, what will those do who are being [a] baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people even baptized for them?"
[Footnote: [a] 1 Corinthians 15:29 This has nothing to do with Christian baptism or salvation. Paul may be referring to the practices of a pagan religion that required a ritual washing to enter an afterlife.]
[Amplified Bible] (AMP).
