I'm looking for a Sarah Elizabeth Brindle who was born in Whitehaven,
Cumberland, in 1876.

According to FreeBMD only one Sarah Brindle was born in Whitehaven in 1876.

But two of them married in Manchester.

1. Married Robert Cummings in Chorley in the March Quarter 1897
2. Married Thomas Peter Wild in the September Quarter, 1903

Both are shown in the 1911 Census as aged 35, born in Whitehaven.

So I'm wondering which of them was the Sarah born in Whitehaven in 1876.

The evidence seems to point to its being the one who married Thomas Wild, as
she shows continuity with a Sarah E. Brindle (or Brendle) in the earlier
censuses,

But the other one seems to appear for the first time at her marriage -- there
doesn't seem to have been any record of her birth, nor does she seem to have
appeared in earlier censuses.

As Mrs Wild appears in the 1911 Census as Sarah E and married as Sarah
Elizabeth, whereas Mrs Cummings is Sarah in the Census and married as
Sarah, I'd have thought it worth getting the Certs to confirm that the
father of Thomas Wild's bride has the same name as the father of baby
Brindle in 1876.

According to LancashireBMD the Robert Cummings - Sarah Brindle 1897 marriage
was at St John The Evangelist, Whittle-le-Woods. In the 1901 census there is
a Robert and Sarah Cummings (indexed as Cumming on Ancestry) living at
Whittle le Woods RG13; Piece: 3932; Folio: 49; Page: 20. with Sarah born
Whittle le Woods.

There is a birth of a Sarah Brindle registered March Qtr 1875 Chorley Reg
Dist, I think this is the Sarah Brindle who married Robert Cummings in 1897

There is possible marriage in Whitehaven between Robert Cummings and Sarah
Bridget Fisher in Whitehaven in March Qtr 1900, I suspect this is the second
couple in the 1911 census in Salford.

Thanks very much for this.

But there are also a Robert and Sarah Cummings shown living in Salford in 1901
(RG 13/3739 Fol 20 p. 31), with both shown as having been born in Whitehaven.

Yes, I think that is the answer to the mystery - that there are actually three
couples, not two:

1. Sarah Elizabeth Brindle who married Thomas Wild in 1903
2. Sarah Brindle who married Robert Cummings in 1897
3. Sarah Bridget Fisher who married Robert Cummings in 1900

and the one I am looking for is 1.
