I hope that you are doing well and have had a successful two weeks since we last met. Let's do a quick round of scrum to check-in.

1. Completed in the last 2 weeks.
=I've been working to insert previously developed GeoGebra interactives into the chapters
=I just finished another revision of Ch 8 Internal Loadings, which included the development of at least 1 new interactives and numerous of SVG drawings. There are still a few examples in Ch 8 which need cleaned up and/or coded into SVG's and LaTeX
2. To do in the next 2 weeks.
=Complete the draft of my parts of Ch 7 Properties of Shapes that I'm writing with Erin
=Accecpt/revise suggestions which come from you all on the chapters
=Get 2 or more chapters complete enough to send to Will for coding into PreTeXt
.
'See' some of you at the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) annual meeting next week! I wish we were together to enjoy a beer!
Best,
Dan

Hello all,

I have completed a partial review of Chpt 9 (Friction) up to screw friction. I have not done much with screws but the content looks very strong.

I will have completed by end of the week a review of Chpt 6 - Equil of Structures. I am about 50% done with the feedback.

Good luck to all!

Hi Dan and all,

Now that summer has arrived, I finally have some time to devote to the Statics book.  This is what I have been up to.

I have updated my copy of pretext to the latest version, gotten my xml/xslt toolchain working again, brushed up on git, and pushed a few minor changes to the book’s repository on github.

I learned that pretext has (experimental) support for Hypothes.is., so I switched that on and it seems to work, though it’s only on my local copy, and I haven’t tested it extensively.  There was a comment on the pretext list that it doesn’t play well with mathJax equations, but that may not be too important.

One of the few upsides to teaching remotely this past term is that I made a bunch of new homework problems and Numbas questions which may find their way into the book.

I am having another look at chapter 3, and I am cleaning up some unfinished examples there.  I have also taken a look at some of the other chapters on google drive, but haven’t contributed there.

Upcoming

I want to start tagging the drafts for pretext asap, because I expect that could take most of the summer.  Dan— can I get started with chapter 1?

The pretext sample chapter 3 that was posted last summer lives in a directory on my wife’s personal website, and is out of date with my local copy. To meet our goal to get something to the students by September, we will need to resolve where the book will be hosted.  We can continue to use her site indefinitely, and even connect the book's domain name to it, but that isn’t a long term solution.

Once the draft is published the best way to update and change it will be to use git. I expect some of the co-authors would would like/need some training with that.  I am willing to help, but I am no git expert.  Is anybody?   The pretext tags may look daunting, but in practice they are sensible and a good editor helps a lot.

I’d be happy to help with testing out the Github based static site hosting if we have something to host, most likely compiled HTML.

Great idea, Devin,

Will, Could you send Devin the files for Ch. 3 Equilibrium of Particles that you have on your home server?

I just pushed the pretext html pages to GitHub at https://github.com/dantheboatman/EngineeringStatics/tree/master/output/html so Devin, go ahead and see what you can do with this.  Right now the only contents are a nearly complete Chapter 3, and some appendixes, but I will start working on Chapter 2 tomorrow.

So here is an example of the output hosted on Github pages. I’m not using a custom URL yet, but that is easily implemented. As far as I can tell it all looks correct. Some of the relative links are broken, but I assume that is because the content doesn’t exist yet.

Hi All,
1.) Completed- Began review of Chapter 5 (Great stuff Andy!), managed to get into my office (required special permissions, SOPs, new badge access etc) and collected my materials for Ch 7. ASEE took up most of last week.
2.) Will complete- Ch 5 review and have Areas and Volumes section added to Ch 7 this week. The rest of Ch 7 will be added by close of next week.- I will be off the radar after that as I finish my CAREER proposal.
Enjoy vacation Eric!

All the best everyone!
Erin

Hi all,

After finishing up classes and taking a quick break to get my life back in order, I've been able to dedicate some time to this again.

1. Completed in the last 2 weeks.
Reviewed Chapter 3 and sent some input to Will just now. I really like the tone of this chapter. Less formal and more conversational. Textbooks always seem to be overly stiff and I think the less formal tone will help make the content feel more accessible.

2. To do in the next 2 weeks.
Really whatever I can help with. I'm happy to look over some other chapters, add some more content, start learning how to help get things uploaded, or anything else. Could anyone use an extra pair of hands?

Best,
James
