Hi Engineering Statics Team!
Great to see those of you who were @ ASEE in Tampa and hope all of your summers are going well.
  1. What have you completed since the last meeting?
    1. Setup draft chapters in Google Docs: At the June 3rd Zoom meeting we self-selected chapter leads and I have created a shared Google Drive folder please let me know if you still need access to that folder - the easiest way is to click in the link and send a request
      1. Each folder include a Google Doc with draft contents I copied over from Workflowy
      2. As a member of our Engineering Statics team you all are welcome to add content and suggest edits to other Google Docs. If you aren't leading a chapter and want to team up, contact the other lead OR me.
      3. I've also established a Standards document to get us all following similar writing standards. If you have questions and don't find answers, post your question to this group and we'll converge on an answer.
    2. Figure sharing: Eric is participating in the development of a concepts warehouse for Statics (and Dynamics). They are developing high quality SVG figures which we should be able to adopt/modify as needed
    3. Writing: I've been writing a bit on Ch 2: Forces and Other Vectors. I welcome any feedback/additions you may have.
    4. Chose PreTeXt as our delivery tool. PreTeXt has a large number of advantages over LibreText and also Will Haynes has graciously offered to mange the technical aspects of PreText. As LibreText is assimilating all OER content anyway, our book will end up there as well for folks looking for a convenient remixing tool which would the facilitate combining it with other material.
  2. What do you plan to complete by the next meeting?
    1. Continue writing: Have a draft of Ch 2 done in Google Doc by the middle of August
    2. Work with Will to create GeoGebra learning material (posted video or recorded webinar) by end of summer. This material could be turned into a live workshop as well.
  3. What is getting in your way?
    1. Landscaping projects and 3 kids 5 and under :)
I'll try for another scrum in July and will look to set up a mid-August Zoom meeting.

Hi Dan,

I hope everyone who was there enjoyed ASEE.

Completed: Started writing chapter 4. Have very rough draft of the text for 2D moments and couples so far.
To do: Plenty more writing on force-couple systems. All the 3D stuff. Create examples, problems, and images.
Getting in the way: We just submitted our ABET self-study this week. I still have lots to do to prepare for the accompanying visit, but having that report done should free up some time to work on the Statics OER.

Best,
James

What have you done since the last meeting?

1. Attended ASEE meeting in Tampa and met  Dan, Jacob, Eric, and Devin.  I'm glad that I went.

2. Made some interactive shear and bending moment diagrams on Geogebra, later to become Numbas type homework problems.  Here's a sample https://www.geogebra.org/material/edit/id/qqv7vew7  You can move the load by dragging the points.

3. Continue to think about my chapter and to add my thoughts to Workflowy as they occur to me.

4.  Weighed the pros/cons of PreTeXt and LibreText and came down on the side of PreTeXt.  I fully support Dan's choice of this.

5. Contacted Rob Beezer to request full, official support for Numbas in PreTeXt.

5. Made some changes to the PreTeXt workflow infrastructure and pushed them to GitHub.

What do you plan to complete by the next meeting?

Although we are currently using google docs as a familiar, shared environment to draft the chapters, ultimately the drafts will have to be tagged and converted to pretext xml, so the sooner we can transition to that mode, the better.   Once content is tagged, all further edits and changes will have to be done the tagged source.

So my plans are to

1. Write some instructions on how to set up your work environment for PreTeXt and post them soon.

2. Do whatever it takes to support you getting set up. Feel free to reach out to me with questions.

3. Make the initial conversion of your draft into PreText format.

4. Figure out with Dan where we are going to host the book.  For the time being, I've put the preliminary version on my webserver at https://weh.maritime.edu/mechanics/textbook  This demonstrates some of the features of PreTeXt and can serve as a sandbox to play in.  I also plan to include instructions and standards for writing the book there, in chapter 0.

5. Work on Numbas-PreText integration.

6. Work on the draft of my chapter.

What's getting in your way?

Not a lot right now -- it's summer and I have some time to focus on this.

Hello Everyone,

1. What have you completed since last meeting.
-Started putting together content for the structures chapter. At this point I've defined structures, trusses, frames, machines, and discussed two-force members. Next up is diving into the method of joints and method of sections.

2. What do you plan on completing before the next meeting.
-Try and finish up the chapter in the next month or so.

3. What is getting in your way.
-Competing time with the development of content for my Dynamics Textbook.

1. What have you completed since last meeting?

Nothing besides our discussions in Tampa. I guess I did make a decision to use my own content for internal forces for my fall term Statics section, which will ensure I get something together for that chapter by October at the latest!

2. What do you plan on completing before the next meeting?

It will be late August before I can devote another chunk of time to this project.

3. What is getting in your way?

Summer break and a trip to Europe.!

I'll be back in touch in late August.

Best,
Eric
