Hi Engineering Statics Team!

I hope that this email finds you well. I wanted to provide a quick update on where we are with our Engineering Statics book. The main topic I need feedback on is highlighted in yellow below.
  • All 10 chapters are now online at https://engineeringstatics.org
  • In Fall 2020, Will, Eric, and I all piloted the book to our Statics classes. It was well-received with the main feedback of needing more examples, which we concur with and will work on moving forward.
  • This semester, a CSU colleague of mine and a community college instructor in British Columbia are piloting the book.
  • Will was granted a sabbatical by the Massachusetts Maritime Academy to work on the book this spring and worked the last few months on editing and coding Ch's 7 and 10 and is now working on making the 67+ GeoGebra interactives more robust and consistent.
  • During Fall 2020 we used Hypothes.is to record edits. We plan to have another round of edits sometime soon and will be in touch with the process for those of you interested in helping with that task. We're leaning toward using the Suggesting mode in Google Docs and then Will will have to make each change manually in the XML code.
  • I'm working to finalize authorship (for the cover, ISBN registration, etc.) and would like your feedback on how we set up the authorship. I believe that Will and I have put the most time into the project and also want to recognize all of your contributions. I see a few options:
    1. List all chapter authors: Baker, Haynes, Berg, Guyader, Henslee, Howard, Lord, and Moore
    2. Go with an edited book style: Edited by Baker and Haynes. With each chapter listing its primary author or two.
    3. Pick an umbrella group name "Mechanics Working Group" or something
    4. Others?
  • I've also attached a draft of the cover (the image is an open image from Unsplash)
Dan

Let me know if I need to make any edits to the list of current contributors below.

Daniel W. Baker Colorado State University Project lead, chapter author, and interactive developer

Devin Berg University of Wisconsin - Stout Chapter author

Andy Guyader Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo Chapter author

William Haynes Massachusetts Maritime Academy Chapter author, interactive developer, and PreTeXt lead

Hi Dan,

I’ll defer to others who contributed more to provide input on how authorship should be handled.  I wanted to express my thanks for including me on this project, though.  Please let me know if there are ways I can help as you wrap the book up.  I would also be interested in having the Statics instructor here at CMU pilot the book some time soon.  Let me know if there’s a timeline I need to be aware of before I point her to the book.

Cheers,
Scott

Thanks Dan.

I don’t have strong feelings either way regarding crediting authors, but I am not one of the authors so my opinion doesn’t really matter anyway.

I will add that I am piloting the book again with my statics course this quarter and will again solicit feedback on the survey you created.

Best,

Eric

Hi Team,
Thanks to Eric, Scott, James, and Will for getting back to me on this topic. I'm leaning toward "edited by Baker and Haynes" like the attached cover shows and then list all other authors as contributing, but not call out specific chapter authors. Any other feedback before we make a final decision on authorship?

Also, let me know if anyone wants to add a middle initial to your name listing.

Will continues to make improvements and we should be too many weeks away from setting up for another collective proofread. Details coming soon!
Dan

Hi Dan,

I think it looks great. I support that format.

Looking forward to helping out however I can with future proofreads etc.
