Bar lowered for engg, pharma admissions

AHMEDABAD: Those who have managed to get 45 % or a just above that in class XII, science stream, can breathe a sigh of relief. They can secure admission in any of the engineering and pharmacy degree courses in the state.

The All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) ratified Gujarat's proposal to reduce the admission criterion from 55 % to 45 % on Saturday. For the reserved category the minimum eligibility is 40%.

The Joint Admission Committee for Professional Courses (JACPC) has claimed that 5,774 students would be benefitted from the move. For now, JACPChas stalled ongoing admission procedures to accommodate more students in accordance with the new rule.

It is interesting to note that in 2010, the minimum eligibility criteria for admission in engineering and pharmacy courses was 35%. The AICTE had insisted that the eligibility be raised to 55% only for the new academic term.

"Filling of admission forms would resume on Monday after we make the necessary changes. From Monday we will declare the availability of forms and the start of admission procedures to accommodate students with lower percentage of marks," said a senior JACPC member.

However, the committee admits that despite bringing the mark bar down there would still be 5,000 vacant seats in engineering and pharmacy courses.

A senior JACPC member told TOI that the seven existing engineering colleges had an addition of 420 seats which may remain vacant.
