Oneimportant question to ask yourself when planning for a future-proof career is what services people are always going to need. Medical professionals are definitely at the top of the list. People will always need medical care and, while the technology we use to deliver some of that care is changing, the necessity for nurses, doctors, and medical professionals will always be there.

Data science is also a promising field for people looking to break down walls and shatter glass ceilings in a traditionally male-dominated industry. An article from Forbes detailed that only 26 percent of the jobs in data science in the U.S are held by women. Thankfully, there are terrific programs out there looking to change these numbers. Girls Who Code is one such program designed to offer clubs and immersion programs for girls from third grade through college. The program teaches girls all about the exciting world of computer science and how they can break into this dynamic field themselves.

There are state-sponsored apprenticeship programs available for people eager to start their careers. Students can explore career opportunities in fields like the energy industry and find a variety of jobs from electrical technicians to power plant operators. You can even find available apprenticeships with specific companies in your industry. Do your parents have an NC529 Account for you? These funds can also be used for apprenticeship programs!

Software developers are also one of the hottest occupations on the market right now. U.S. News and World Report ranked it as their top job overall in their list of the 100 best jobs for 2020 as well as number one in both STEM and technology fields.

Once you have your degrees, you can stand to make a good living as a veterinarian. The 2018 median pay for vets was $93,880 and the projected growth rate for the next decade is 18 percent, more than three times higher than the national average.

Instead of worrying about a robot taking your job someday, what if you were the person designing the robot? Artificial intelligence is a dynamic and growing field with a wide variety of occupations, ranging from robotics engineers to natural language processing to artificial intelligence researchers.

Surveys and projections predict a steady need for future veterinary medical doctors and scientists. There is a present demand for food animal veterinarians and veterinary specialists to deal with society's concerns relating to animal welfare and biomedical/environmental research. Future employment opportunities will mirror society's involvement in issues of energy, quality of food, human health, and quality of life. Veterinary medicine is deeply involved in all these areas.

About 80% of veterinarians choose to work in private practice, providing health care for companion animals. Private practitioners may work in a one-person practice or as part of a team in a larger clinic or hospital. Private practitioners offer many services including health exams, vaccinations, treatment of ill animals, surgery, and emergency care.

Private practitioners may focus on small animals (dogs, cats, and/or exotic pets), large animals (horses and/or ruminants), or work in a mixed animal practice with small and large animals. Many practitioners narrow their interests further, such as equine, avian, or feline veterinarians.

Competent research veterinarians are constantly needed in pharmaceutical and private research laboratories, universities, and various government agencies. These veterinarians investigate basic and applied problems concerning food-producing animals, companion animals, laboratory animals, captive animals, wildlife, and various aquatic species. For example:

Thousands of veterinarians teach in universities and colleges. Wherever you find a medical school, agricultural school, or veterinary school you are likely to find a veterinarian helping to spread the knowledge of animal health and disease. Veterinarians in educational institutions teach students, conduct research, write for scientific journals and consumer magazines, and develop continuing education programs. [return to top]

Fundamental to treatment of animal diseases is the need to establish a definitive diagnosis. Veterinarians who specialize in diagnostics include those with advanced training in pathology and microbiology. These specialists focus their careers on developing and utilizing state of the art equipment and techniques to analyze samples such as tissue or blood in order to deliver accurate, innovative, and timely diagnostic and consultative services to the veterinary and animal health community.

Diagnostic laboratories may be associated with veterinary or medical teaching hospitals or may be privately owned and operated. In diagnostic labs affiliated with teaching hospitals, veterinary specialists are often also involved with teaching and research. [return to top]

Various businesses and organizations employ experienced veterinarians as full-time or part-time consultants. To be a successful consultant requires advanced skills developed through years of experience and advanced training and education. These veterinarians advise private businesses such as ranches, dairies, poultry farms, and meat processing facilities. They also work with public organizations such as ASPCA, animal shelters, humane societies, and 4-H. [return to top]

All states in the U.S. (and many counties and cities) have veterinarians who advise and help control animal diseases. As public health officials, they continually inspect milk, meats, and other animal food products to make sure they are safe to consume. In regulatory medicine, public health veterinarians inspect meat, poultry, and dairy products, test for livestock disease, and oversee interstate transport of animals. Public health veterinarians are hired to investigate food-borne disease outbreaks, evaluate the safety of food and water, and study the effects of biological and environmental contamination.

The United States Department of Agriculture is the single largest employer of veterinarians. Their work is largely in the prevention and control of infectious and parasitic diseases and the assurance of safe and accurately labeled food products of animal origin.

Veterinarians in the Army and Air Force provide care for government-owned animals, inspect food, safeguard the health of military and other government personnel, and serve as biomedical research investigators. [return to top]

New career options originate as industries adapt to the changes in the market or the world in general. The career options available today may evolve into different roles, creating more opportunities in the future.

Was it historical beliefs of mankind or fanciful English stories? Is it true that I prefer painting to sports? Was it the science experiments that piqued my interest or the cultural activities that allowed me to show off my skills?

Because you spent 12 years of your life in school, this is the most important phase in determining the greatest career alternatives for you. You may not realize it, but you uncover many of your skills and talents during these 12 years. Children who appreciate English, for example, might pursue a career in teaching or writing. Those who enjoy math and science, on the other hand, are more likely to work in the finance or healthcare areas.

The final step is to conduct research and identify work opportunities that are relevant to your interests. Based on your long-term goals, talents, and interests, you must create a list of at least eight excellent job alternatives.

All of these elements play a significant role in determining your success in whichever career options you choose. So, before pursuing any career opportunity, take your time and consider all of these factors.

As data is much more easily available and computing power is getting cheaper, data scientists can successfully provide answers to real-world problems. This has led to an increase in their demand throughout the entire spectrum of industries.

As a data scientist, you are required to derive insights from data. The insights are used for data-driven decision making. The professionals are required to design data storage, manipulation and analysis to answer specific questions. They create predictive models for various business scenarios. Data scientists are part of the ML teams also where their skills are used to work on data.

If you are keen on future opportunities in data science, then you must work on important skills required for the job. You should be proficient in programming languages like Python or R, statistics and data exploration techniques.
