I got into voiceover acting by accident. I used to sing jingles for commercials, and I worked out of a few studios in Atlanta. One day, while I was recording, a voice actor for another commercial didn't show up.
Of course, I was very flattered, but I also worried that my voice would become so ubiquitous that it would affect my ability to book other gigs. I loved my voiceover career, and I didn't want to be pigeonholed as a virtual-assistant voice.
Apple later released different accents and languages for Siri. I met John Briggs, a famous BBC announcer in England who voiced the original British version of Siri. I also connected with Karen Jacobsen, a voice actor and singer who was the original Australian Siri. From my conversations with them, they had the exact same experience: They made recordings in 2005, not knowing what they'd eventually be used for, and then their voices ended up being purchased by Apple and used for Siri.

Bennett's career began in 1974 when she was recorded as the voice of First National Bank of Atlanta's Tillie the All-Time Teller.[6] She has recorded messages for the public address system in all Delta Air Lines terminals worldwide, for e-learning software and GPS navigation software,[7] and for telephone systems.[8] Her voice has also been used in numerous local and national television advertisements for companies including Ford, Coca-Cola, Fisher-Price, McDonald's, The Home Depot, Goodyear, Visa, Macy's, Hot Pockets, Club Med, and Cartoon Network. In 2021, she provided the voice of EMMA, an artificial intelligence application, in Persona 5 Strikers by Atlus.[9]
In June 2005, the software company ScanSoft was looking for someone to be the voice for a database project involving speech construction. They inquired with GM Voices and selected Bennett, who happened to be present when the scheduled voice-over artist was absent.[10] She worked in a home recording booth in July 2005, more than four hours each day, reading phrases and sentences. The recordings were then concatenated into the various words, sentences, and paragraphs used in the Siri voice.[8] Bennett became aware she was the voice of Siri when a friend emailed her about it in October 2011.
I use the Australian male voice or voice 1 as it's otherwise known. It is my default voice. The other day, I put my phone down and when I picked it up to use again, I found it wasn't using my preferred Australian male siri voice, it had switched to the Karen voice instead.
I realised the Australian siri voices no longer appeared as downloaded in my voiceover settings, so went to download them again. I have tried for several days now, 3 to be exact. My siri voice is also set to Australian male. There are times when I use siri, it speaks in lower audio quality, but comes back crystal clear, but still doesn't appear useable from voiceover menu. I've tried leaving them to download overnight, on wifi and off wifi, but in the morning it still says "stop downloading voice 1."
I've tried restarting my phone a few times, but no fix. If anyone has any suggestions, that would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure you need Wifi to download the voices. saying this, did you have your phone on charge as you left it overnight? i'm sure you did, just tring to think of any other reason. sorry i'm not much more help.
Yes, my phone was charging. I tried on wifi, and then the next night on 5G just to see what might happen. Both times I left the phone unlocked on the screen where the voice was downloading hoping there would be no interruption but in the morning it still said: "stop downloading voice and didn't give any indication of how much there was left. Very strange.
You can communicate with the voice assistance feature found on your phone from your watch however the feature cannot be used to change device settings or start timed activities on your watch. Communication is limited to audible responses and commands and will not display visual information on the watch.

why is this happening and how do I fix it? I listened to all of the Voiceover voices even though I never use voiceover just to see if m phone has forced one of those. I think all of those sound inhuman and some are bizarre like Bubbles.
I have tried getting the list of installed voices and looking for one that has a quality of .enhanced, but sometimes there is no enhanced voice installed, and even when there is, it may or may not be the voice selected by the user in the Settings app.
Enhanced versions of voices are probably not present in new iOS devices by default in order to save storage. Iterating thru available voices on my brand new iPhone, I only found Default quality voices such as: [AVSpeechSynthesisVoice 0x1c4e11cf0] Language: en-US, Name: Samantha, Quality: Default [com.apple.ttsbundle.Samantha-compact]
In macOS 10.13 High Sierra (which also gets the new voice), there seems to be a new SiriTTS framework that's probably related to this functionality, but it's in PrivateFrameworks so it doesn't have a developer API.
I'll try to provide a more detailed answer. AVSpeechSynthesizer cannot use the Siri voice. Apple has locked this voice to ensure privacy as the malicious app could impersonate Siri and get private information that way.
Apple hasn't changed this for years, but there is ongoing initiative regarding this. We already know that there is a solution to access privacy sensitive features in the iOS using the permissions, and there is no reason why Siri voice couldn't be accessed with user permission. switching from Google/Smartthings to hubitat & getting rid of Google. Spouse would like to use siri to control zigbee (sengled) lightbulbs. Mainly turning the lights off and on - I have setup hubitat dashboard to allow spouse to control lights using a web browser. Whats the easiest way to use Siri to control the Zigbee light bulbs (sengled)?
Like @ogiewon, I too use Maker API + Homebridge to expose my Hubitat devices to Homekit. Apart from the voice control, the added benefit is that this also allows control of devices outside of your home. HE dashboards also let you do that, but I personally prefer the Apple Home interface.

"I recorded four hours a day, five days a week for the month of July," Bennett says. For a voice actor, that workload causes a lot of strain. "That's a long time to be talking constantly. Consequently, you get tired."
Bennett thinks some new recordings have probably been incorporated into the current version of Siri, to improve it and provide more options for users. That means the digital assistant you hear on your phone today is likely a mashup of different human voices, including Bennett and others, strung together into one helpful program.
