The London Underground first opened as an underground railway in 1863 and its first electrified underground line opened in 1890,[1] making it the world's oldest metro system.[2] The Beijing Subway is the world's longest metro network at 815.2 kilometres (507 mi) and the Shanghai Metro has the highest annual ridership at 2.83 billion trips.[3] The New York City Subway has the greatest number of stations with 472.[4][5] As of 2023,[update] the country with the most metro systems is China, with 46 in operation.

The International Association of Public Transport (L'Union Internationale des Transports Publics, or UITP) defines metro systems as urban passenger transport systems, "operated on their own right of way and segregated from general road and pedestrian traffic".[6][7] The terms heavy rail (mainly in North America) and heavy urban rail are essentially synonymous with the term "metro".[8][9][10] Heavy rail systems are also specifically defined as an "electric railway".[8][9]

The dividing line between the metro and other modes of public transport, such as light rail[8][9] and commuter rail,[8][9] is not always clear. The UITP only makes distinctions between "metros" and "light rail",[6] the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) distinguish all three modes.[8][9] A common way to distinguish metro from light rail is by their separation from other traffic. While light rail systems may share roads or have level crossings, a metro system runs, almost always, on a grade-separated exclusive right-of-way, with no access for pedestrians and other traffic.

In contrast to commuter rail or light rail, metro systems are primarily used for transport within a city, and have higher service frequencies and substantially higher passenger volume capacities. Most metro systems do not share tracks with freight trains or inter-city rail services. It is not relevant whether the system runs on steel wheels or rubber tyres, or if the power supply is from a third rail or overhead line.

The name of the system is not a criterion for inclusion or exclusion. Some cities use "metro" as a brand name for a transit line with no component of rapid transit whatsoever. Similarly, there are systems branded "light rail" that meet every criterion for being a rapid transit system. Some systems also incorporate light metro or light rail lines as part of the larger system under a common name. These are listed, but the light rail lines are not counted in the provided network data.

Certain transit networks may match the service standards of metro systems, but reach far out of the city and are sometimes known as S-Bahn, suburban, regional or commuter rail. These are not included in this list. Neither are funicular systems, or people movers, such as amusement park, ski resort and airport transport systems.

This list counts metros separately when multiple metros in one city or metropolitan area have separate owners or operating companies. This list expressly does not aim at representing the size and scope of the total rapid transit network of a certain city or metropolitan area. The data in this list should not be used to infer the size of a city's, region's, or country's urban rail transit systems, or to establish a ranking.

This list is sortable. Click on the icon in the column header to change sort key and sort order.Note: This list may not be fully representative, as yearly ridership numbers during the COVID-19 pandemic are shown for some systems, while others have numbers from previous years.

The following is a list of new worldwide metro systems that are currently actively under construction. In some cases it is not clear if the system will be considered a full metro system once it begins operational service. Only metro systems under construction are listed where there are no metro systems currently in operation in the same city.

Since there is not going to be another World of Subways game coming anytime soon, I have made this forum to share my ideas on what another World of Subways game would look like. But before I move on to my suggestions, I would want to talk about how I know the game, but I haven't played it.

A few years ago, I have got World of Subways 3 for my old PC. It works fine, but the controls are the hard part. I know that it takes a long time to understand how the game works. Until now, I tried to get all four World of Subways games during the sale earlier this month, but I checked the reviews and I see that the game is having compatibility issues on newer PCs, so I never purchased the games. I was familiar with a few train simulators such as Trainz and MSTS, they were fun to play for me, but I still do not fully understand how to operate trains in the game.

In this game, the player would drive trains of different eras around the lines as they would wish. However, earning these trains comes with a challenge. To unlock these trains, the player would have to complete certain missions in career mode (Explained later below.).

Rather than having the lines separate, all the lines will be merged into one big open-world level without any sudden loading zones that freeze the game for a few seconds. It would feature dynamic weather while driving above ground, and trains may be able to switch routes while driving the train.

Career Mode, as briefly explained earlier, is a gamemode where you play as a subway driver, driving through various subway lines. Rather than interacting with NPC characters in the Depot for missions, they are now given in the form of an e-mail on your computer. Your home is the hub for where you can select which missions to play in or explore. Some e-mails contain a side mission.

Not bad at all!
But for now it seems like TML-Studios is prioritizing "The Bus" game (that is set in full-scale/size Berlin 1:1) that they have been working on since 2016/2017 and they wont start on any new project until this one will be done.

But for now, this post is a concept of what another WoS game would look like using next-gen technology and TML-Studios' mechanics that were featured in their various simulation games. Thanks for the compliment!

As the world grapples with the climate crisis, subway expansions present a viable and urgent opportunity for meaningful climate action. World Bank research results to date show that rapid subway expansion provides an excellent opportunity for significant reduction of carbon emissions in our efforts to address climate change. However, subways are expensive, construction periods are long, and cost of operation and maintenance of subways is also high. A recent study by Levy (2019) of 207 subway projects in 47 countries reported a median cost of US$200 million/km and much higher costs in some cases. KPMG International has estimated that annual outlays for operations and maintenance are about 2 percent of initial investments. Therefore, overall impact assessments of subways are critical before making investments.

The network handles approximately five million passengers a day, with as many as 540 trains operating throughout the network at peak times. With increased usage, the network has undergone a number of extensions and upgrades since it was first opened but overcrowding is a common problem across the network.

London Underground has been owned and operated by Transport for London subsidiary London Underground Limited since 2007. Originally, tube lines were owned by various private companies until 1933 when the London Passenger Transport Board was introduced. Ownership of the London Underground was then passed to London Regional Transport in 1984.

The network comprises four lines. A fifth line to connect the suburban rail system has been proposed but construction has not yet been planned. Lines M1 and M2 were extended in 1973 to their current respective lengths of 4.4km and 10.3km.

The system features the first automated metro route in Eastern Europe on the M4 line which opened in March 2014. It was estimated that the line would save passengers 14 million hours of travel time each year, as well as lowering the amount of road traffic. While initial planning for the line began in the 1970s, construction did not begin until 2006.

The system carries approximately 13 million passengers every year. It features an outer and inner circle, with services operating the same route in separate tunnels clockwise in the outer circle and anti-clockwise in the inner circle.

A number of upgrade works are being undertaken across the subway as part of its largest project in 30 years. It includes modernisation of all stations, 17 new trains from Swiss train manufacturer Stadler, and replacement of the ramps and turnouts that allow trains to access the upgraded depot overground.
