The history of Oliva Cigars traces back to the year 1886 in Pinar Del Rio, Cuba where the founder Melanio Oliva grew tobacco. Later, he took part in Cuba's War of Independence which led to the closure of his otherwise growing factory. However, soon after returning from the war, he resumed his operations. In the beginning of the 1920's, Hipolito Oliva, the son of Melanio, took over the operations and grew fine quality tobaccos for several decades. Hipolito's son Gilberto Oliva later took over the growing operations and soon after started brokering tobaccos.
In the early 1960's Gilberto's job took him to several countries including Honduras, Mexico, Panama, and the Philippines. In 1995, he settled in Nicaragua where he found the most fertile soil for growing tobacco and began manufacturing cigars. Gilberto believed that Nicaragua was the best place for growing tobacco as it has naturally perfect weather for growing Habano. In 1995 he launched a brand and christened it 'Gilberto Oliva'. The cigars manufactured then were composed of Dominican fillers, binders, and wrappers, and Nicaraguan fillers. The very next year, the name of the brand was changed to 'Oliva'.

With that whirlwind in the rearview mirror, you may ask yourself, "What's next for TATS?" A part of the answer is here today, via an A/V sampler that press materials emphasize is not a music video. The soundtrack is Dirt, a 7-inch EP featuring demos of some new music written with Brett Rosenberg's left-field pop group Quichenight that's slated to appear on an album called Bras and Blazers. The video, directed by Helen Gilley of TATS and Butthole, is a collage that includes some swirling psychedelic patterns, some green-screen tomfoolery involving a toilet-paper mummy, and Gilbert playing badminton (or maybe tennis?) while topless. It's the sort of thing that most folks wouldn't consider scandalous, but it's probably not something you wanna watch at work (unless your boss, like mine, is super cool).

Whoah! What a lot of catching up there has been to do, and still to do, after the Unconvention. As you can see from the Home page I have finally listed some of the CDs that have been in a holding pattern in the office for a while - each one a gem in it's own unique way. So much different music, and there are at least another 10 things to get in the bazaar over the coming weeks.

I have so many lovely emails and messages about the Uncon that I want to post, and will I do just as soon as I can. It seems as if it really was a life changing experience for so many - totally unlike any other concert I can think of.
