When Napoleon said that an army marches on it’s stomach he was
giving a generalized overview. Certainly an army can function much
more efficiently on a full stomach. Napoleon was using a metaphor,
that is if you want the machine of war to function properly then it
requires constant input of trained men, updated equipment, accurate
information and most importantly, money. The correlation between
America being the wealthiest country on earth and also having the most
dominant military force is no surprise. Large quantities of wealth of
been spent on our military endeavors.
President Obama was part of the graduation ceremonies at the
U.S Naval academy. Apart from handing John Sydney McCain, son of
Arizona senator John McCain, his bachelor degree he also gave a
speech. He pledged to keep U.S dominance abroad. If there were any
economists in the crowd they may have wandered what the price tag of
that dominance would be. Like Timon, the U.S seems to be spending
lavishly on futility. How does society benefit from that dominance?
Timon squandered away his fortune on what he thought would secure his
future. In the end Timon ended up realizing that with his fortune
evaporated, he was no more secure. Not all dilemmas can be solved by
spending more money. Certainly money must be spent on technology that
can save lives. Our soldiers should also be kept financially
comfortable. To keep our force at maximum potency a large amount of
our wealth has to be spent. A tipping point has been reached though. A
dispaportioned amount of wealth is now being spent. Who can determine
what portion of our budget should be spent on our dominance? Defense
spending will pull money away for other institutions. A large percent
of the population are suffering from this decision. Money that was
earmarked for education, healthcare and the creation of jobs is now
being spent on defense. This not only has a negative effect on today’s
generation but an even more detrimental effect for the generation to
come. Our military might secures our geopolitical supremacy but, peace
can secure a much more stable future
As more land and resources are acquired the citizens of this country
suffer more and more. The biggest lose we might see in the future is
the lack of jobs. Money that could have went to the creation of new
jobs is being used for destruction. Of course they’re will be some new
job creations in the future in the defense factor, and any investor in
this sector will see some positive returns as well.
