Essay thesis
State the thesis
State how Timon’s character is related to the U.S. as a state
Discuss how Bacevich sees the current standing of the U.S. in the
world.
Relate Timon’s life to the U.S. history and Bacevich’s crisis of
profligacy
Crisis in the U.S.
The importance of the foreign policy for the wellbeing of the United
States
The importance of understanding the interdependence of major and
minor world powers
Research process
Researched the direction of former and current U.S. foreign policy
Researched how the foreign policy affects the military and the public
Realized how the foreign policy affects the economy and the position
of the United States in the world.
If I were in charge of a million dollar six-month project, I would
focus the research on the energy dependency and how our hunger for oil
makes us fight wars that would not be fought otherwise. Today, without
major resources, the most effective tool is influencing our elected
officials to support a direction of becoming oil free in the nearest
future.
• What I did
Thesis: Like Bacevich, Apemantus would view the military suspiciously
and would argue that the military only exists to benefit the wealthy.
The military exists only to defend and protect government and
individual property interests, i.e., oil interests in the Middle East.
Apemantus would agree with Bacevich that the assumption that civilians
support the military is misguided.
Apemantus would arguably be opposed to any measure which benefited
military personnel or the family of anyone in the military, regardless
of whether he supported the military action in which the military was
involved.
Bacevich focuses on the fact that the U.S. government is mistaken in
its belief that civilians support the military.
• Why did I do what I did
I feel that the military personnel should be supported.
Persons enlisted in the military are not to be blamed for the
decisions being made by high-ranking officials in Washington, and they
should not be penalized or mistreated.
Americans can, and should, support the troops without supporting the
war- whatever the war that may be.
• What did I learn
All branches of the military widely and disproportionately recruit
from minority communities and those in poor socio-economic classes.
(Lutz, 2008; Moore, 2004).
African-Americans are overrepresented at the enlisted level, as more
than 22 percent of the enlisted, although African-Americans comprise
approximately only fourteen percent of the overall population of the
United States. (Lee, 2005).
The military is so successful in recruiting from poorer, isolated and
undereducated communities because these classes of persons are most
vulnerable to influences of the military and have limited career
options outside the military. (Lutz, 2008; Lee, 2004).
Therefore, military personnel should be protected
• What else could be done?
If I were in charge of a six-month project, had a one million dollar
budget, and could hire assistants or purchase necessary items, I would
lobby bills that would be made into laws that would benefit the
military personnel and their families
We should Support the military personnel in general, even without
support of the war effort in particular. This is the humanitarian and
correct action to take.

• Why did I do what I did
I feel that the military personnel should be supported
Persons enlisted in the military are not to be blamed for the
Argument of support -The military power should be used for the defense
of the country and not to interfere with other countries.
The military power should be used to prevent a war and not to provoke
a war.
To solve problems. military generals should carefully make the
decisions of using military power.
Why did you do what you did?
1. The economic recession: state budget crisis, workers laid off,
schools’ fees increase.
2. The deploying of troops to foreign countries.
What did you learn?
1. Combining current events to Shakespeare’ play.
2. The US foreign policy and military strategy.
3. The draft bill- Rangel, Rep, C. 2006. H. R. 4752. To provide for
the common defense by requiring all persons in the United States,
including women, between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform a period of
military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the
national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes.
What else could be done?
1.Funding an organization for protesting of the war and providing
education assistant to the children who are in the war zone.
2. Making a movie of protesting of the war.
What did you do?
Chose to speak about American Consumption, greed and the waste of
money? Bacevich and Timon agree. Flavius was correct, honest and
warned Timon of his waste and spending habits. Money from war could
be spent here at home.
Why did you do what you did?
To educate Americans about the importance of educating our children,
the outcome of wars and why it may be necessary sometimes. Also,
America has always been known as a Superpower, and we should be a
leader by example, not by extravagance or arrogance.
What did you learn?
How spoiled Americans are, how wasteful with money. The cost of war,
not only with lives but with what the war is costing in the billions,
our National debt is about $12 trillion. And that President has a
methodical plan and works with his war cabinet and considers all
options and listens to his people, does not dictate like President
Bush did.
What else could be done?
Timon was incorrect, about spending money foolishly, careless and was
taken advantage of. Bacevich, is right to expose the waste of
American spending habits.
We have to start with educating ourselves, our children. Consider
all
options, consider our country and the other countries as well.
• What did you do?
I was trying to analyze the similarities between the two characters
from Shakespeare’s play, Timon of Athens with current US military
culture in the recent issue of Iraq and Afghanistan. The two
characters, Timon and Alcibiades somewhat mirrors corporations who
procures the war and the US political decision to have war with
terrorism. In the other hand, Alcibiades can be compared as the US
military culture itself. One of the Bacevich’s argument was that US
does not need a huge troops, but instead, a flexible, yet organized
foreign policy. After 9/11 the hatred towards terrorists actually
reached to a point where the citizens of Iraq and Afghanistan were
ostracized by many nations, which looks very similar to the Timon’s
hatred towards the whole mankind. Alcibiades actually changed his
plan at the end and compromised with the Athenians, willing to
prevent
the war. In that essence, if US considered the about the war and
the
aftermath, and elaborate the foreign policy before anything, it might
have prevented this endless war we are dealing with now.
• Why did you do what you did?
The war is still in process, seems like it will never end. The
inflation, recession, economic breakdown and etc. are all somewhat
related to this endless war we are having now. This is one of the
reason why I focused on my characters to war on terrorism issues.
Also as I read the play, I found myself automatically realize how
those two characters mirrors today’s military culture. If we don’t
make changes now, the history will repeat itself and end up losing
more lives as well as causing economic damages.
• What did you learn?
By doing the research, I have learned a lot about the issues that we
have in Iraq and Afghanistan, the political mistakes, cost of war,
current economic hardships, and etc. I researched via internet since
I can get so much information from prestigious sources like NY times,
Times, the site that runs by government, academic journals, or
articles to personal opinions and private groups. I didn’t pay so
much attention to the political issues towards war, not until I
started this project. However, interestingly I found myself
searching
for more in detail just out of curiosity and learning so much about
current military cultures, political issues, and economics. As I
reached at the end of this project, I learned that using armed force
will be the very last solution, and realized that it is necessary to
elaborate more on foreign policy.
• What else could be done?
If I had a one million dollar budget, assistant, and more time for
this project, I would like to interview number of politicians who
actually supported the war and those who disagreed and compare those
two. Also open up a seminar discussing about the problems in Iraq
and
Afghanistan so that I can get more voices from many different groups
of people. If there are limited time or resources, I would
definitely
go online search for ideas or opinions since it is the fastest and
least expensive way to get vast amount of sources.
