In my final essay, I brought to light the ideas of Timon and
Alcibiades. Timon for his hatred of Athens and beliefs after he lost
all of his money, and Alcibiades, as a former soldier of Athens, for
trying to right all the wrongs done to him by the Athens government. I
wrote that this comes into play with Bacevich's idea of the crisis of
military, where the government has become greedy for self-development.
My paper is primarily about what the U.S. government's intentions were
and are concerning the war on Iraq.
My motive for writing what I wrote was because within the eight years
that we've been at war, everybody has begun to hate the Bush
administration without really knowing why. I don't know if we are all
just ignorant, but when 9/11 happened, we were all affected in one way
or another and most importantly we wanted someone to blame, even Bush.
Now nearly a decade later, and we hate Bush for putting us in a war. I
wrote this essay because I just wanted to know what his intentions
were, and why.
I think the greatest thing that technology has for us is Google. We
can refine our searches to specific thoughts. So when I looked up what
the government’s intentions were when we entered into this war,
hundreds of pages popped up, all with different ideas of why Bush put
us in a war. It's because he's selfish, it's because we want to
liberate Iraq, it's because we really want to reinforce our military,
control the oil and gas, and have control over the currency system,
and last but not least, it's because it will make a better America. Of
all the research I’ve done, I learned that people are just naturally
selfish. We don't know how to share global power and co-exist without
enemies. For whatever reason we're in this war, it's not good enough.
Somebody always loses, so I don't know how that's satisfying enough.
If I had a million dollar budget to last me on a six-month project,
and it concerned this topic, I think it would all go to waste. Money
and time don't solve war, it us. We started war, so I think it’s only
right we end it. It’s hard to say that we should re-evaluate our moral
values and relate them to more altruistic intentions, but I think
that’s the first step.

Natalya Dverina presentation outline

Essay thesis
State the thesis
State how Timon’s character is related to the U.S. as a state
Discuss how Bacevich sees the current standing of the U.S. in the
world.
Relate Timon’s life to the U.S. history and Bacevich’s crisis of
profligacy

Crisis in the U.S.
The importance of the foreign policy for the wellbeing of the United
States
The importance of understanding the interdependence of major and
minor world powers

Research process
Researched the direction of former and current U.S. foreign policy
Researched how the foreign policy affects the military and the public
Realized how the foreign policy affects the economy and the position
of the United States in the world.

If I were in charge of a million dollar six-month project, I would
focus the research on the energy dependency and how our hunger for oil
makes us fight wars that would not be fought otherwise. Today, without
major resources, the most effective tool is influencing our elected
officials to support a direction of becoming oil free in the nearest
future.

• What I did

Thesis: Like Bacevich, Apemantus would view the military suspiciously
and would argue that the military only exists to benefit the wealthy.

The military exists only to defend and protect government and
individual property interests, i.e., oil interests in the Middle East.
Apemantus would agree with Bacevich that the assumption that civilians
support the military is misguided.

Apemantus would arguably be opposed to any measure which benefited
military personnel or the family of anyone in the military, regardless
of whether he supported the military action in which the military was
involved.

Bacevich focuses on the fact that the U.S. government is mistaken in
its belief that civilians support the military.

• Why did I do what I did

I feel that the military personnel should be supported.

Persons enlisted in the military are not to be blamed for the
decisions being made by high-ranking officials in Washington, and they
should not be penalized or mistreated.

Americans can, and should, support the troops without supporting the
war- whatever the war that may be.

• What did I learn

All branches of the military widely and disproportionately recruit
from minority communities and those in poor socio-economic classes.
(Lutz, 2008; Moore, 2004).

African-Americans are overrepresented at the enlisted level, as more
than 22 percent of the enlisted, although African-Americans comprise
approximately only fourteen percent of the overall population of the
United States. (Lee, 2005).

The military is so successful in recruiting from poorer, isolated and
undereducated communities because these classes of persons are most
vulnerable to influences of the military and have limited career
options outside the military. (Lutz, 2008; Lee, 2004).

Therefore, military personnel should be protected

• What else could be done?

If I were in charge of a six-month project, had a one million dollar
budget, and could hire assistants or purchase necessary items, I would
lobby bills that would be made into laws that would benefit the
military personnel and their families

We should Support the military personnel in general, even without
support of the war effort in particular. This is the humanitarian and
correct action to take.

What did you do?
Topic: Timon or Flavius, who could solve problems for the Athens?
Questions of the US military culture today
Opinion: Correct _ Flavius gives people advise and calms them when
they are in a difficult situation. Also, he is willing to negotiate
with others to prevent a war.
Wrong- Timon does not understand human nature very well and denounce
to all humankind when he was treated wrongly by someone.
Bacevich is correct - war can‘t fix all problems. The US should change
policy instead of changing the military.

Argument of support -The military power should be used for the defense
of the country and not to interfere with other countries.
The military power should be used to prevent a war and not to provoke
a war.
To solve problems. military generals should carefully make the
decisions of using military power.

Why did you do what you did?
1. The economic recession: state budget crisis, workers laid off,
schools’ fees increase.
2. The deploying of troops to foreign countries.

What did you learn?
1. Combining current events to Shakespeare’ play.
2. The US foreign policy and military strategy.
3. The draft bill- Rangel, Rep, C. 2006. H. R. 4752. To provide for
the common defense by requiring all persons in the United States,
including women, between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform a period of
military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the
national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes.

What else could be done?

1.Funding an organization for protesting of the war and providing
education assistant to the children who are in the war zone.
2. Making a movie of protesting of the war.

What did you do?
Chose to speak about American Consumption, greed and the waste of
money? Bacevich and Timon agree. Flavius was correct, honest and
warned Timon of his waste and spending habits. Money from war could
be spent here at home.

Why did you do what you did?

To educate Americans about the importance of educating our children,
the outcome of wars and why it may be necessary sometimes. Also,
America has always been known as a Superpower, and we should be a
leader by example, not by extravagance or arrogance.

What did you learn?
How spoiled Americans are, how wasteful with money. The cost of war,
not only with lives but with what the war is costing in the billions,
our National debt is about $12 trillion. And that President has a
methodical plan and works with his war cabinet and considers all
options and listens to his people, does not dictate like President
Bush did.

What else could be done?

Timon was incorrect, about spending money foolishly, careless and was
taken advantage of. Bacevich, is right to expose the waste of
American spending habits.
We have to start with educating ourselves, our children. Consider
all
options, consider our country and the other countries as well.

• What did you do?
I was trying to analyze the similarities between the two characters
from Shakespeare’s play, Timon of Athens with current US military
culture in the recent issue of Iraq and Afghanistan. The two
characters, Timon and Alcibiades somewhat mirrors corporations who
procures the war and the US political decision to have war with
terrorism. In the other hand, Alcibiades can be compared as the US
military culture itself. One of the Bacevich’s argument was that US
does not need a huge troops, but instead, a flexible, yet organized
foreign policy. After 9/11 the hatred towards terrorists actually
reached to a point where the citizens of Iraq and Afghanistan were
ostracized by many nations, which looks very similar to the Timon’s
hatred towards the whole mankind. Alcibiades actually changed his
plan at the end and compromised with the Athenians, willing to
prevent
the war. In that essence, if US considered the about the war and
the
aftermath, and elaborate the foreign policy before anything, it might
have prevented this endless war we are dealing with now.

• Why did you do what you did?
The war is still in process, seems like it will never end. The
inflation, recession, economic breakdown and etc. are all somewhat
related to this endless war we are having now. This is one of the
reason why I focused on my characters to war on terrorism issues.
Also as I read the play, I found myself automatically realize how
those two characters mirrors today’s military culture. If we don’t
make changes now, the history will repeat itself and end up losing
more lives as well as causing economic damages.

• What did you learn?
By doing the research, I have learned a lot about the issues that we
have in Iraq and Afghanistan, the political mistakes, cost of war,
current economic hardships, and etc. I researched via internet since
I can get so much information from prestigious sources like NY times,
Times, the site that runs by government, academic journals, or
articles to personal opinions and private groups. I didn’t pay so
much attention to the political issues towards war, not until I
started this project. However, interestingly I found myself
searching
for more in detail just out of curiosity and learning so much about
current military cultures, political issues, and economics. As I
reached at the end of this project, I learned that using armed force
will be the very last solution, and realized that it is necessary to
elaborate more on foreign policy.

• What else could be done?
If I had a one million dollar budget, assistant, and more time for
this project, I would like to interview number of politicians who
actually supported the war and those who disagreed and compare those
two. Also open up a seminar discussing about the problems in Iraq
and
Afghanistan so that I can get more voices from many different groups
of people. If there are limited time or resources, I would
definitely
go online search for ideas or opinions since it is the fastest and
least expensive way to get vast amount of sources.

I tried to illustrate in essay 3 was the link between Timon’s
wreck less spending habits and, the spending habits of government
endeavors. Although America is not in the dire situation that Timon
found himself in by the end of Shakespeare “Timon of Athens, I felt
that we as citizens may be noticing some of the similar tendencies
shared, such as the total disreguard for the future. I also wanted to
point out that Timon lost all his possessions and respect, and that
America might also be loosing all of it’s respect as well. I chose
General Alciabades as a character whose role in “Timon of Athens”
seems to mimick some of the outcry heard around the nation in light
of
these disastrous decisions. I wanted to make the similarity that
wasn’t just a total blanket of ignorance that covered Timons eyes,
that in fact there was a small glimmer of reason and truth found in
his life in the form of the general.
I really wanted to study the decay of American infastructure
as well as a moral decay as well. The motive is that a large percent
of the population seem to be suffering as a result of this decay. It
seems that some of our most important institutions such as,
education,
civil services and health care are suffering as well. I found
evidence
in my research that a majority of our infrastructure is falling into
disrepair, especially in our cities. While things such as bridges,
plumbing systems, even roads may not be the most important problem we
face I believe it serves as an accurate measuring stick in
determining
what we as a nation deem important.
I felt that it would be more important to research material
that was relatively objective as opposed to opinions. As I learned a
lot of good opinionated material may make a few good arguments but
sometimes came of as whiney and offered no realistic solutions to the
problem. I enjoyed Andrew Bacevich as a point of research because it
seems he has the ability and experience to argue from both points of
view, the left and right as it were.
If I were in a given the resoures mentioned I would like to do a
study on where America stands relative to where we are presently and
where we could be if we chose a different path. If you could prove
that our schools are underfunded and that by taking another path our
schools could end up being some of the best well funded in the world
people would be more inclined to change their destiny. People are
rarely motivated when they don’t believe that there could be a better
way. I would also like to circulate this objective research around
and
perhaps ask for different ideas or how they or their particular
community could change things. When people feel like they own their
own destinys they may be inclined to make changes.
