ExternalInterface: Did not find file "socket.cfg"

Hallo,

I'm trying to export an EnergyPlus 8.3 model as an FMU to import it into MATLAB (using the Modelon FMI Toolbox).

I added the following two entries to my working .idf:

ExternalInterface,
    FunctionalMockupUnitExport;  !- Name of External Interface

ExternalInterface:FunctionalMockupUnitExport:From:Variable,
    zone_heated1,            !- Output:Variable Index Key Name
    Zone Mean Air Temperature,  !- Output:Variable Name
    TRooMea;                 !- FMU Variable Name

Now if I call RunEPlus.bat with this idf-file and my weatherdata, I get the following errors:

   ** Severe  ** ExternalInterface: Did not find file "socket.cfg".
   **   ~~~   ** This file needs to be in same directory as in.idf.
   **   ~~~   ** Check the documentation for the ExternalInterface.
   **  Fatal  ** Error in ExternalInterface: Check EnergyPlus *.err file.

I did not find any information about the socket.cfg file, so can you please help what I am missing?

You need to compile the fmu with the EnergyPlusToFMU script: http://simulationresearch.lbl.gov/fmu/EnergyPlus/export/index.html

an EnergyPlus model that is exported as an FMU is not run directly (with RunEPlus.bat) but by the tool (in your case MATLAB Modelon FMI Toolbox).

As far as I understand the inner workings, the EnergyPlus that get's run is the first one in your PATH, so if the wrong version of EnergyPlus is being called, check that.

I tried before to compile the idf into an FMU and run it in MATLAB, but that generated some error. So to track that error down, I wanted to simulate the .idf from which the FMU is generated directly in EnergyPlus, and that's when the message about socket.cfg occured.

But now I checked my PATH-variable again, and there was an entry to EnergyPlus 8.1.0 instead of EnergyPlus 8.3.0, so now at least my FMU works in the FMUChecker (https://trac.fmi-standard.org/browser/branches/public/Test_FMUs/Compliance-Checker, good tool to check compatibility of FMUs). In MATLAB it still does not work, but that's probably another issue.

when the FMU runs in MATLAB, you should find a .err file somewhere in your filesystem. Maybe that can help you track down the problem?

The Modelon FMI Toolbox does not work like expected, but that's something for future investigations.

For now I have the following problem:

Using the attached FMU and the FMUchecker,

C:\Tools\FMUChecker>fmuCheck.win64.exe -c , -l 6 -t c:\Temp\FMUchecker -h 6 -n 0 -s 15552000 simplebuilding_1_1_V830.fmu 1> checker_output.log 2>&1

I get the following fatal errors (see also the attached log file):

[FATAL][FMUCHK] Simulation loop terminated  at time 6 since FMU returned status: Fatal
? Test FMI 1.0 CS (Fatal Error): fmiDoStep: An error occured in a previous call. CommunicationStepSize: 6.000000 is different from time step: 6 in input file.

But the .csv-file in the output-directory shows that the simulation was running for 180 days (=15552000 seconds). I don't get it, why the FMU then doesn't work like intended. Do you have any ideas?

Ok, I got the solution by myself:

C:\Tools\FMUChecker>fmuCheck.win64.exe -c , -l 6 -t c:\Temp\FMUchecker -h 600 -n 0 -s 15552000 simplebuilding_1_1_V830.fmu 1> checker_output.log 2>&1

(-h 600 means communication step size 10 minutes = 600 seconds). Then this FMU works.

I will go on to let it run in MATLAB.

wait... time step 6 in an energyplus file is a communication step size of 10 minutes, right?

when i was writing a test-driver for an energyplus fmu (using the fmilib from jmodellica) i used a hstep of 60*60, equivalent to an energyplus timestep of 1.

so... that means the communication step size is in seconds. you should set it to 10 * 60 (600) for the fmuchecker.

try this:

C:\Tools\FMUChecker>fmuCheck.win64.exe -c , -l 6 -t c:\Temp\FMUchecker -h 600 -n 0 -s 15552000 simplebuilding_1_1_V830.fmu 1> checker_output.log 2>&1
