Power 10 Ranking 2009

Investing in the Cleantech sector is hot. But, without some field work, it's really hard to tell what  companies and startups are really promising. It's a combination of great technologies, management, policies, investment climate, and perhaps a little luck. Here at CleanTech.Org, we've done the homework for you. Our founder Neal Dikeman reveals this year's Power 10 ranking:

I spend most of my day meeting and talking to companies in the cleantech sector. And those of you who know me know I have opinions on who is doing it right, and who is doing it wrong. As before this is the Cleantech Blog Power 10 Ranking of cleantech companies doing it right.

In his latest entry, Dikeman also discusses the REAL story of Moore's Law for the solar industry. The nuances are mischievous!

The Results Are In: EcoSecurities Forestry Survey

CleanTech is proud to promote the results of EcoSecurities' 2009 Forestry Survey. Thank you to those of you at CleanTech who particapted in this survey. The report is now downloadable here.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

Waxman-Markey and REDD
by David Niebauer
David Niebauer is a corporate and transaction attorney, located in San Francisco, whose practice is focused on clean energy and environmental technologies.

In late March Congressmen Henry Waxman and Ed Markey released the first draft of a climate bill that presents three mechanisms designed to provide funding for reducing tropical deforestation: offsets, a supplemental pollution reduction program, and strategic reserve auctions.

To some extent, Waxman-Markey can be seen as a response to scientific data on the role of tropical forests in climate change.  A US cap-and-trade legislation that includes tropical avoided deforestation credits, despite its many methodological challenges, is critical in addressing global climate change. We will watch the progress of this bill with great interest.  More >

A Moment in History (Sep 2003):
Humid Air Injection Boosts Combustion Turbine Output

by Edward Beardsworth, UFTO Notes
The Utility Federal Technology Opportunities (UFTO) Notes were originally published for a multi-client group of utility power companies between 1994 and 2005. Freely available today, they provide historical insight into the development of the energy sector.

Additional megawatt-hours (MWH) can be obtained at low cost during peak demand periods from gas turbines and combined cycle power plants by injecting externally compressed, humidified, and heated air into a combustion turbine (CT) up-stream of combustors. This novel approach is denoted as CT-HAI, (HAI is an acronym for Humidified Air Injection) for simple cycles and CC-HAI for combined cycles.  More >

Be sure to research the UFTO notes before you begin your venture!
