Forum members,

I hope you are having a great summer. A quick update from Laney College as we gear up for the Fall 2012 semester. We would like to share with you about:

·         NEW COHORT OF THE BUILDING AUTOMATION PROGRAM (see flyer attached)

·         NSF CENTER GRANT

·         DOE/DOC BUILDING OPERATIONS GRANT

1)    NEW COHORT STARTING FOR BUILDING AUTOMATION PROGRAM:

Please help us spread the word as we are starting a second cohort for our Building Automation program! We need to boost enrollment quickly in order to be able to run all courses as planned.

ONE OF ONLY FOUR FULLY STATE-APPROVED PUBLIC COLLEGE PROGRAMS IN THE ENTIRE USA, the Certificate and AS Degree in Building Automation Systems is a 2-year interdisciplinary hands-on course of study preparing building automation and controls technicians and programmers. Energy efficiency knowledge and skills are embedded throughout. Those already possessing some HVAC technician or computer technology skills are particularly good candidates though enrollment is open to all. Job prospects for this growing field appear very good for our local area--A FEW OF OUR STUDENTS HAVE ALREADY BEEN HIRED PRIOR TO FINISHING THE PROGRAM!

Here is a link to a flyer for new incoming students (same as attached file):

2)    NSF CENTER:

Following on our past two NSF project grants, we submitted our application to become a national NSF Center – Building Efficiency for a Sustainable Tomorrow (BEST). Our proposal reviewed well, and we hosted a successful site visit for NSF in June. We expect to be funded and are awaiting final confirmation by the end of September.

3)    DOE/DOC GRANT ON BUILDING OPERATIONS

We are excited to be partnering with Energy Commercialization, the Corporation for Manufacturing Excellence, and Local 39 on a DOE/DOC grant (part of the Better Buildings Initiative) this Fall, focusing on training building operators in “retuning”/retro-commissioning strategies. See the announcement at: http://apps1.eere.energy.gov/news/progress_alerts.cfm/pa_id=750

We look forward to seeing you all this coming academic year!
