FACULTY IN ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL TECHNOLOGY (HVAC), LANEY COLLEGE

Laney College, a vibrant urban community college near downtown
Oakland, CA, has an opening for a full-time faculty member for its
Environmental Control Technology (ECT) Program.

The Environmental Control Technology Program offers certificates and
AS degrees in residential/light commercial HVAC/R, Commercial HVAC
Systems, Building Automation Systems, and Residential Building
Performance. Certificates/degrees in Commercial Energy Management and
High-Tech Building Operations are in development. Graduates work as
building technicians and operators, building automation technicians,
energy auditors and managers, sales people, or independent
contractors. Supported by several grants, including the National
Science Foundation, and a committed community of industry advisors,
the ECT program is continuously developing new curriculum, labs,
networking, and outreach opportunities to promote sustainable building
operations. Through its grant-funded efforts, the ECT program has
become a national leader in HVAC and building performance education
and has recently established a national network for HVAC and building

Job tasks include:
• Provide lecture and laboratory instruction in core subjects
within the discipline including, Commercial Refrigeration, Commercial
and Residential HVAC Design and Troubleshooting, Direct Digital
Control Systems, Building Automation Systems, and Energy Efficiency
for Commercial Buildings.
• Provide instruction based on a thorough knowledge of theory and
techniques in HVACR Design and Application, strong mathematics,
knowledge of HVAC system design, knowledge of Building Commissioning,
knowledge of Direct Digital Control Systems Design, Integration and
Programming, and knowledge of Building Automation Systems.
• Teaching schedule may include evening or weekend hours as part
of contract assignment.
Instructors are expected to use and keep abreast of advanced teaching
methods, including the use of current and future technologies to
support student learning and career objectives.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Possession of any Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college
or university AND four years of professional experience in HVAC&R,
Building Automation Systems, Mechanical Engineering or closely related
field;
OR
2. Possession of any Associate Degree from an accredited college
AND six years of experience in HVAC&R, Building Automation Systems, or
closely related field;
OR
3. May submit a fully satisfied lifetime California Community
College Instructor Credential authorizing service to teach courses in
Environmental Control Technology.
(THE CREDENTIAL WILL NOT SATISFY THE REQUIREMENTS FOR TENURE);
(California credentials were no longer issued after July 1, 1990).
OR
4. The equivalent qualifications.
(Candidates who claim equivalency must provide conclusive evidence, as
clear and reliable on the college transcripts as required on the
District Equivalency Application Form. Refer to the Equivalency
Procedures below. This is not a process to waive the minimum
qualifications.) Note: Foreign Degree(s) must be evaluated by an
official foreign credentials/transcripts evaluation and translation
service.
5. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse
academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds
of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications
• At least two (2) years prior experience teaching college level
courses in HVAC&R or closely related field.
• Significant and successful industry work experience related to
the HVAC&R or Building Automation field.
• Possess knowledge and skills in theory and practice of
Commercial and Residential HVAC&R, Direct Digital Controls,
Psychometrics, DDC System Design, Programming, and Integration, Energy
Efficiency Principles in Commercial Buildings, Building Automation
Systems.
• Strong foundation in Physical Sciences and Mathematics.
• Mechanical Engineering Degree preferred.
