Work with scores of volunteers and an educational Tiny Home on wheels to help thousands of community members--especially those with limited income--save energy, money, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In the face of mounting social inequality and rampant climate change, every community has a tremendous opportunity and challenge. If tens of thousands of residents are supported to reduce their energy use and transition to local, renewable sources of energy to heat and power their homes (and transportation), these communities can not only reach their ambitious climate goals, but create and sustain thousands of clean energy local jobs that can sustain families. Over the last five years Get Your GreenBack Tompkins has developed a Community Energy Outreach & Advising Program that has helped hundreds of people take high-impact steps that reduce their energy use and energy bills in the areas of energy efficiency, renewable heating, solar, and transportation. We have created an award-winning volunteer Energy Navigator program, in which trained volunteers provide education and advising to hundreds of their peers in incredibly diverse settings. We have created a system for personalized energy advising, with associated materials for outreach, tracking, and evaluation. And we are completing the construction of a “Powerhouse”, a Tiny Home on wheels with hands-on exhibits to engage diverse residents around themes of energy efficiency and renewable energy.

We are seeking a Program Leader that can help grow this programming, and expand the impact from hundreds to thousands--with a special focus on households with limited income--and help our communities reach their environmental and social equity goals.

Would you be good at and enjoy doing the following?

  • Recruiting, training, supporting and mentoring a growing number of volunteer Energy Navigators who are connected to diverse populations throughout the county, as well as supervising a staff person and a small group of interns

  • Doing outreach at community events and food pantries; presenting before small and large groups in different community settings; speaking with people one-on-one over the phone or in person

  • Managing the Tiny Home “Powerhouse”, including driving it to events around the area, as well as developing fee-for-service programming with it for schools and students in the area

  • Coordinating the above work with other community partners and interfacing with local energy contractors to provide wraparound support to the people you are advising

  • Managing the budget for the program, and assisting with grant-writing

More than experience in the field of energy, and apart from the ability to walk on water, we’re looking for someone with a go-getter attitude who strives for high impact; someone with a warm and welcoming personality, who can make people from all walks of life feel at ease; someone who values learning and trying new things, and who enjoys seeing others grow; someone who balances order and efficiency with an appreciation for adaptation and flexibility as circumstances change.

This is a full-time position with a full benefits package, including health and dental insurance, paid leave, retirement, life insurance and more.

Individuals who bring a diverse perspective and are supportive of diversity are strongly encouraged to apply.
