Flourish: A Visionary New Understanding of Happiness and Well-being

Flourish is a book by Martin Seligman, one of the world's foremost academic psychologists and the founder of the Positive Psychology movement. In this book, Seligman offers a new theory on what makes people flourish and how to truly get the most out of life. He also presents inspiring stories of positive psychology in action, such as innovative schools, a new theory of intelligence, and a comprehensive soldier fitness program.

What is well-being?

Seligman argues that well-being is more than just happiness, which he defines as a positive emotion that depends on external circumstances. He proposes a broader and more lasting concept of well-being, based on five elements: positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. These elements are abbreviated as PERMA, and each one can be measured and enhanced by positive psychology interventions.

How to create your happiness?

Seligman suggests that there are many exercises that can boost your well-being, based on scientific evidence. Some of these exercises are:

    • The gratitude visit: Write a letter to someone who has done something good for you, and deliver it in person.
    • The three blessings: Every night, write down three things that went well that day, and why they happened.
    • The signature strengths: Identify your top five character strengths, and use them in new ways every day.
    • The flow: Find an activity that challenges you and absorbs you completely, and do it regularly.
    • The active-constructive response: When someone shares good news with you, express genuine interest and enthusiasm.

    How to teach well-being?

Seligman also advocates for positive education, which is teaching well-being to young people. He believes that schools should not only focus on academic achievement, but also on developing the character and resilience of students. He cites the example of Geelong Grammar School in Australia, which implemented a whole-school positive psychology program that improved the well-being and learning outcomes of students and staff.

    How to flourish?

Seligman concludes that flourishing is not a fixed state, but a dynamic process that requires constant effort and attention. He invites us to measure our well-being regularly, and to apply the principles and practices of positive psychology to our own lives, as well as to our families, communities, and nations. He challenges us to go beyond minimizing suffering, and to pursue the highest goals of life.
